Biography

George Abraham Leonard was born in 1832 in Bristol, Rhode Island.1 He and Emily J. Thomas were married on 22 July 1851 in Providence, Rhode Island.2 He died on 24 October 1890 at age ~58 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. He was buried in North Burial Ground, Providence, Rhode Island.
1850 Census Records: George, a blacksmith, living with his brother, John H. and Ann E. Leonard, and their infant son Alfred in Providence, RI. In 1867 Providence City Directory, he was listed as living at 124 Westminister. His death record lists him as living at Congress Street in Providence, a blacksmith by trade. He is listed as dying of malaria and cancer of the stomach and liver. He was a Civil War veteran.

Before the Antietam Campaign:
A blacksmith from Providence, he enlisted on 6 September 1861 in Company A, 4th Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry. He was buried in the North Burial Ground in Providence reserved for Civil War veterans.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In his after-action Report, Lt Colonel Curtis cited Corporal Leonard and others... who rallied, after the regiment was broken, on the left of the Fifty-first Pennsylvania, and continued fighting until all their ammunition was gone, when I ordered them to recross the river to regain the regiment.

The remainder of the War:
He reenlisted and re-mustered as a Veteran on 5 January 1864, and transferred to Company G, 7th Rhode Island Infantry on the consolidation of 21 October 1864. He transferred (again consolidated) to the Battalion, 7th Rhode Island Infantry on 6 June 1865 and mustered out on 13 July 1865.

He was working as a farm laborer on the farm of Edwin Sylvester in Seekonk at the time of the 1870 Census.

He was buried near the Civil War Memorial in the North Burial Ground in Providence.

Biography

Major Elkanah Leonard was born on 15 December 1703 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He and Elizabeth Tisdale were married on 21 October 1725 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 24 July 1781 at age 77 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 He was buried in Lakeville Cemetery (Thompson's Hill), Lakeville, Massachusetts.3
He was a lawyer at MIddleborough. He was "one of the most distinguished geniuses of his name and day." (NEHGS Register, 1851, p. 412). He practiced law at Middleborough, where he was the first attorney and the only one until 1738. "His assistance in the defence in criminal prosecutions was much sought after, and his abilities were never more conspicuous than in those defenses." He was many times elected a selectman, moderator, and representative to the General Court. During the latter part of his life, his mind was obscured. ECL says he lost his mind at about the age of 43. On 8 January 1749, Judge of Probate appointed his wife Elizabeth and his son Elkanah his guardians, as he was declared "non compos mentis." (Per copy of original court document with the Old Colony Historical Society.) Major Elkanah Leonard had person sources.4

DaughterAlice Leonard (b. about 1701, d. after 1753)
DaughterJoanna Leonard+ (b. 28 February 1705, d. 4 December 1783)

Biography

Thomas Leonard was born on 22 January 1665 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Joanna Pitcher were married on 1 December 1699 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He died in 1740 at age ~75 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
He lived after his marriage about a mile north of the Raynham Forge on the road to Whittinton. He was paid for work done for the forge, but there is little else about him. According to ECL, he seems to have died without male issue.

Fanny Leonard Koster ascribes male children Thomas, John, Philip, and Josiah to him in her charts. These are apparently in error, in that no other evidence has been found to support them and his will indicates he had only two daughters.

The Mayflower Society in the Thomas Rogers silver book notes that their earlier entry #281 Thomas Leonard was not the son of Thomas and Johanah Pitcher Leonard, whose only heirs were daughters Alice Leonard and Joanna Crossman (Bristol Co. PR 13:323).

GML makes note of a Boston Transcript article 10 Feb 1932: "John Barney, son of John and Mary (Throop) Barney, born 27 Sept 1698 at Bristol, RI, settled in Norton and married Mary Leonard, daughter of Thomas Leonard and Joanna Pitcher Leonard. No dates are found. His widow granted administration 7 Jan 1757. This is apparently an error: the above Mary Leonard was the daughter of John and Mary (King) Leonard. Thomas Leonard had person sources.2
