He bought the forge at Handy's Mills in Rochester, and taking his oldest brother George into co-partnership, carried on the forge for some four or five years. He sold out to his brother, George, who remained in Rochester the rest of his life. Nehemiah went to New Bedford and commenced business on Orange Street. In four or five years he became a director of the Merchants Bank and agent for several whale ships. He went into the manufacture of oil and candlemaking. He erected a candle works at Leonard's wharf (Rotches Landing).

Samuel Leonard was born on 17 February 1791 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

Hannah Taber were married on 2 October 1814 in Fairhaven, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 25 October 1868 at age 77 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
He was a merchant in New Bedford. He built for the firm of Rotch, Arnold and Russell an extensive salt works at "the cove." Later Rotch built the wharf locally known as Leonard's wharf. After a fire that destroyed his brother Nehemiah's works, he rebuilt the same. He had what was then the world's largest oil refinery in New Bedford. He was the first to make colored wax candles, which were used worldwide.
