There's conflicting information as to whether he married Charity Lincoln or Charity Leonard, dau. of Benjamin Lincoln or Leonard. She died of cancer.

There was a Benjamin White Leonard who apparently was also known as Benjamin White Lincoln, son of Aaron Lincoln and Hannah Lincoln (?) referenced in MA VR's to 1850, but no further information. I cannot find a Charity Leonard matching these birth and death dates.

Biography

Joseph Leonard was born on 2 June 1754 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He and Mary Scott were married on 5 May 1779. He died on 1 December 1842 at age 88 in Binghampton, Broome County, New York.
"In early life he followed the sea and was for seven years engaged in whale fisheries. About 1779, his uncle David Leonard gave him some lands in Pennsylvania, upon condition that he would remove there and oversee other lands belonging to the donor. He accepted the gift and located in the town of Pittstown, Luzerne Co.

At this period the Indians of this locality were very hostile to the white settlers who were obliged to take refuge in block houses from which they dare not ventur out except in sufficient numbers to overpower the savages. At one time, however, Capt. Joseph went alone and unprotected for a physician for his sick wife: the Indians afterwards told him they saw him but would not molest him for fear of giving an alarm. A few days after this the settlers received warning of an expected attack from the Indians and retreated to Stroudburg about seventy or eighty miles distant-- the sick wife of Mr. Leonard being carried upon the back of a very strong man named Cary. Then followed the awful massacre of Wyoming...."

On 6 January 1795 Joseph Leonard of Union, Tioga Co., NY, sold to Jonathan Leonard of Middleborough his right in the estate of his father, Joseph Leonard, late of Middleborough, deceased. Joseph Leonard had person sources.1
