Seth Leonard was born in 1763 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.^1,2 He and Susanna Lincoln were married on 25 August 1791 in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. He died on 1 December 1828 at age ~65 in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.³

They moved to Westmoreland, NH and lived at Glebe. Information on Seth, his children, and grandchildren comes from History of Westmoreland, NH, 1741-1970, 1976. "Seth...came to Westmoreland and settled in the southeastern part of town until his death 1830. Only one of his children is living, George Leonard, who resides with his son-in-law, DBC Hill." Harriotte Leonard Standish says he resided in Swanzey, NH. He was a blacksmith. Chesebrough Genealogy has him marrying a Lincoln.

Seth signed off on Ruth Eddy's will in favor of Artemas Field on January 11, 1828. Seth's death notice in New Hampshire Sentinel, 12-12-1828, Vol. XXX, issue 50, page.

Susanna Lincoln was born in 1767 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Seth Leonard and she were married on 25 August 1791 in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. She died on 27 August 1843 at age ~76 in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.¹

She was a James Leonard descendant through her mother, Abiah Willis.

Barney Leonard was born in 1757 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He and Phebe Bassett were married on 5 February 1780 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.¹ He died on 21 April 1821 at age ~64 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He was buried in Pleasant Street Cemetery, Bridgewater, MA or Grave 86, Scotland Yard Cemetery.

He is variously known as Barnabus, Barna, and Barney. Bridgewater VR's calls him Barnabas in marriage to Phebe Basset. Ancestry is in "Genealogy of the Descendants of William Chesebrough, Founder of Stonington, CT," Anna Chesebrough Wildey, 1903, but this may be in error.

He served in the Revolutionary War as a corporal and a sergeant.

Per Harriotte Leonard Standish in Badger, The Leonard Dictionary: "Barney (Barna) Leonard, son of William or Seth Leonard and Sarah or Ruth Hoar." Possible parents: William Leonard and Sarah Hoar, Seth Leonard and Ruth Hoar, William Leonard and Ann Barney.

On Aug. 29, 1774, Jonathan Carver of Taunton was appointed guardian to Barney Leonard, a minor above the age of 14 yr., son of Seth Leonard, late of Taunton, deceased. He was probably born abt. 1757 in Taunton, MA, married February 5, 1780 Phebe Bassett of Bridgewater... He was called Mr. Barney Leonard of Taunton...

Bristol Co. Court Records 129:28: 29 August 1774: Jonathan Carver of Taunton was allowed to be guardian unto Barney Leonard, a minor above the age of fourteen years, son of the late Seth Leonard of Taunton (per Wardwell C. Leonard, Jr.). Jonathan married Sarah Holmes in 24 Oct 1746 in Bridgewater and died there 13 Jan 1797. No record of his children.

Barney was a Revolutionary soldier. "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution" list three entries for Barnabus or Barney Leonard: "Drummer in Capt. Joseph Keith's company, Col. Cotton's regiment, service from Sept. 25 to Oct. 30, 1777,on a secret expedition to Tiverton;" "Corporal, Lt. Zachariah Watkin's company, Col. Ezra Wood's regiment, enlisted May 14, 1788, service to Feb. 14, 1779, 9 mos., at North River, regiment raised for 8 mos. from time of arrival at Peekskill;" and "Private, Capt. Ichabod Leonard's company, Col. Abiel Mitchell's regiment, service 7 days, company marched from Taunton to Tiverton on the alarm of August 1, 1780." It is not clear that all three were the same person, but this Barney was at least one of them.

Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files: "Leonard, Barney or Barnabas, Phebe, W24512, MA Line, sol. m Phebe Bassett 5 Feb 1780 both were of Bridgewater in Plymouth Co MA & sol d there 21 April 1821 & his wid appl there 22 Aug 1838 aged 78, wid d 30 Oct 1838, a Joseph Bassett was of Bridgewater MA in 1838 but no relationship to wid was stated"

In the 1790 Census, the Barna Leonard household consisted of 1 male over 16 and 2 females. In the 1800 Census, there were 4 members of the household, including 2 children, a boy under 10 and a girl 16-25. In the 1810 Census, there were 5 members of the family, 3 of whom were over 25, with 1 male 16-25 and 1 female 16-25.

Plymouth Court records say he was a gravestone cutter in action attaching property of Seth Cushing (Vol. 9, #6).

He and his wife are buried near her parents in Bridgewater, as is his son, Barney.

Nahum Mitchell, History of Bridgewater, p. 237, mentions only two children of Barna -- Barna, Jr. and Ruth.

Phebe Bassett was born on 15 August 1759 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.¹ Barney Leonard and she were married on 5 February 1780 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.² She died on 30 October 1838 at age 79 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. She was buried in Grave 85, Scotland Yard Cemetery, Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Sarah ("Sally") Leonard was born in 1752. Corporal Nathaniel Field and she were married on 3 May 1774 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. She died on 21 October 1834 at age ~82.

Sarah ("Sally") Leonard was also known as Sarah Leonard. Was it this Seth's daughter Sarah Leonard or William's daughter Sarah Leonard who married Nathaniel Field? Field Genealogy says it was the daughter of William Leonard and Ruth Hoar, but White Genealogy says it was the daughter of William Leonard and Sarah Hoar.

She signed off on her rights to Ruth Eddy's estate in favor of Artemas Field on March 19, 1828, along with her brother, Daniel Leonard. She was born on 5 April 1752 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Ruth Leonard was born about 1762 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. Ezra Eddy and she were married on 18 January 1784 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ She died on 9 September 1826 at age ~64 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.²

"The Eddy Family in America" quotes her as the daughter of Seth and Ruth (Horn or Hoar) Leonard (from Cheseboro Gen., p. 60).

She left a will which identified her brothers and sister: leaving money to sister Sarah Field, brother Seth Leonard, brother Daniel Leonard, and real estate to her nephew, Artemas Field. She and Ezra had no children.

John and Hanna Eddy sold to Artemas Field "all our right in the estate of Ruth Eddy, late of Taunton, dec'd." (i.e., dower rights). Dated 23 Aug 1832. This was witnessed by John Eddy, Jr. and Artemas Field, Jr. Note that this was after both Ruth and her husband, Ezra, had died. It's unclear as to who this John Eddy was, but probably he was Ezra's brother.

Daniel Leonard and widow Sarah Field did the same dtd. 19th March 1828, Taunton. Seth Leonard did the same dtd. 11 Jan 1828, Cheshire, New Hampshire. They were the ones benefitting from Ruth Eddy's will.

Barney Leonard and Ruth L. Mitchell did the same 20 Aug 1832. This would have been after Ezra remarried and died.

On 31 Dec 1832, William Leonard's living heirs did the same, including Simeon Woodward, Peddy (Leonard) Woodward, Stillman Fields, Dinah W. (Leonard) Fields, Ruth H. Leonard widow of Mansfield, William Leonard, Abigail Leonard, Pardon Leonard, Lovice (Burt) Leonard, Sally Field, Nathaniel Field, Philander Fecto, Lemira W. (Leonard) Fecto, Josephus Leonard, Theodora D. (Leonard) Wilbor. This would seem to indicate the above were closely enough related to Ruth to have some claim to her dower rights.

Ezra Eddy was born in 1754 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Ruth Leonard were married on 18 January 1784 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ He and Silence Tucker Hill were married on 22 June 1830 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 28 May 1832 at age ~78 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹

Ezra was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and also the War of 1812. He lived all his life in Norton and Taunton. He and Ruth had no children. He's #9373 in the Eddy Family Genealogy (pp. 917-8).

There is an Ezra Eddy household listed in Norton in the 1790 Census. It consisted of two males over 16 and one female.

Daniel Leonard was born in 1767 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Or was he born in 1766? He and Levina Jones were married on 2 March 1791 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ He and Sibel Davis were married on 2 September 1805 in New Salem, Franklin County, Massachusetts. He died on 5 April 1847 at age ~80 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Or did he die 8 Mar 1847. MA VR's says 5 Apr. He was buried at Field Cemetery in Taunton, Massachusetts.

They lived in Sutton, MA, per E.C.L. There's a Daniel Leonard in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 Censuses in Sutton, MA. Daniel Leonard of Sutton is listed in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War, Vol. 11, page 826. (Another Daniel? This one too young to have fought in Rev. War?)

The children were apparently born in Taunton and raised in Sutton. WCL questions facts about Daniel and is researching. WCL doesn't list children of Daniel: Daniel and George and isn't sure about Barney. Levina would have been born five years after mother's death (1803 vs. 1808). George, listed as being born 1811, would have been born 8 years after mother's death -- child of second wife, Sibel?. WCL thinks Daniel, if he was the Sutton Daniel, may have returned to Taunton before dying and may have been cared for by William's daughter, Betsey Leonard, who is buried next to him in the Field Cemetery. Daniel Leonard, brother of Barney Leonard, was resident in Taunton 29 Dec 1827 (Bristol Co. Land Records 125:385, WCL). (Date looks wrong or wrong Daniel -- Daniel barely born in 1767).

Did they have a daughter, Sarah, b. 1791, d. 16 Feb 1874, m. Edward Norbery? Yes.

The history of Sutton includes a narrative where Daniel and another man slept in an unoccupied house; the attic was used to store corn, which cascaded down the stairwell when the attic structure failed.

OneWorldTree has Daniel born 28 March 1773 in Taunton and dying in Union, Tolland Co., CT, 28 March 1842, son of Jacob Leonard and Rhoda Wheeler. That appears to mix up two lines of Leonards. Records have Daniel and Lavina as parents.

Question as to whether George was a child of the second marriage. Doesn't seem right.

Hannah Leonard 2nd was born on 14 June 1772 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ John Eddy and she were married on 13 July 1797 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.² She died on 11 April 1840 at age 67 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Was this Ruth Eddy the wife of Ezra Eddy?

They lived in Norton all their lives. John received land from his father.

The Sarah Leonard who married Nathaniel Field was said to be the daughter of Seth Leonard who married Ruth Hoar. But it's possible the children of Seth and William are mixed up. See notes on William Leonard. Perhaps there was only one Sarah Leonard, not two.

Nicholas White Family genealogy has Capt. Nathaniel Field, a farmer; resided in Taunton where he died July 1, 1860; married, first, Dec. 24, 1795, Sarah, daughter of William and Hannah(Thayer) Leonard, who was born Feb. 17, 1775 and died Oct. 18, 1839. He married, second, Sept. 20, 1840, Chloe, widow of Zephaniah Wilbur and daughter of Giles and Mehitable (Wilbur) Leach. His will, dated Sept. 25, 1843, was proved Nov. 9, 1860.

William Leonard was born on 27 May 1751 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.¹ He and Hannah Thayer were married on 22 October 1771 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.² He and Dinah Burt were married on 9 December 1804 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 28 December 1819 at age 68 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.^3,4 He was buried at Oakland Cemetery in Glebe Road, Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts.

He was a carpenter and resided in Taunton.

Source of parents is Malcolm Leonard's PAF file. Taunton VR's give date of birth, but not parents. But this also seems to be verified by the quitclaims to dower rights to Ruth Leonard Eddy's property. Also, the Nicholas White Family Genealogy names these parents of William and his two wives (p. 222). A researcher on ancestry.com has William the son of Seth Leonard b. 1729 and Ruth Hoar.

William had a total of 17 children by his two wives. He was referred to as William 2nd in marriage to Hannah. It's strange that he didn't name a child Seth, either after his father or his wife's father (both of whom were named Seth). Indeed, Badger's Leonard Dictionary lists Seth of Westmoreland as the 10th child of William and Hannah Thayer, but Harriott Leonard Standish says this is impossible.

William and Hannah sold land to Jonathan Leonard of Norton February 14, 1780. A Jonathan Leonard household in Norton is listed in the 1790 Census. They also sold land to Leb Harvey in 1786. William, Jr. was married to Abigail Harvey.

By the 1790 Census, they must have moved to Taunton. The Census lists a William Leonard household of 9, 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, and 4 females. Listed on the same page are the households of Benjamin Leonard, Ichabod Leonard, 2 James Leonards, and Jemima Leonard. Jemima was probably the widow of James Leonard, with the other 2 James Leonards the son and grandson of James, deceased.

White genealogy says he died December 28, 1819, aged 68 years. Was he born in Taunton or Bridgewater? His birth is listed in Taunton VR's. White Genealogy says he was the son of William and Sarah (Hoar) Leonard and that his fist wife was Hannah Thayer and his second wife Dinah Burt.

Will was probated February 4, 1820. He lived in Taunton. Widow Dinah, minor children George W. B, Susannah L., and Lydia B. There's a probate record also dated July 27, 1810, mentioning William Leonard, wife Dinah of Taunton, sons William Jr. and Samuel.

The Leonard Dictionary by Harriott Leonard Standish mentions an additional child, Seth, of Westmoreland, NH (IMPOSSIBLE says Mrs. Standish, but logical, given father and father-in-law's name Seth). The Leonard Dictionary mentions as sources Mrs. Lucinda Leonard Field Lincoln's data, sent by Mrs. Cliff Field. It also mentions that Mr. Charles Thatcher's data claims that the William who married Hannah Thayer and Dinah Burt was of Mansfield, but the clerk of probate, Taunton wrote that in probate, in settlement of the estate, he was called of Taunton, and in Taunton VR is given his marriage, but not his children. Harriott Leonard Standish asked about proof that the William Leonard who married Hannah Thayer was the same William Leonard who married Dinah Burt (#9548, Boston Transcript, 15 January 1930). William Leonard had person sources.⁵

Samuel B. Leonard, 2nd, was born on 11 November 1779 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Dilly Burt were married on 26 August 1804 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ He died on 24 October 1829 at age 49 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.² He was buried at Glebe Street Cemetery in Taunton, Massachusetts.

They sold land to Ichabod Leonard of Taunton 6 June 1818. A land record 6 June 1817 has Samuel Leonard and wife Dilla of Taunton releasing all rights in the estate of Dinah, widow of Samuel Leonard of Taunton. This doesn't make sense -- Dinah Burt was married to William Leonard, who didn't die until 1819. Samuel B. Leonard, 2nd, had person sources.³

Uriah Smith was born about 1784 in Massachusetts. He and Mereda Field were married in March 1806 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Libeus Leonard was born on 12 November 1784 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ He died on 3 June 1807 at age 22 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ He was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Glebe Street, Taunton, Massachusetts.

He died unmarried, according to G.M.L. Mac Leonard has checked the record. He was the son of William and Hannah, brother of Lucinda Field. He's listed in the Taunton VR's as son of William and Hannah, brother of Lucinda Field, with a date of June 5, age 22. Libeus Leonard had person sources.²

Pardon Leonard was born on 18 May 1788 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ He and Louisa Burt were married on 24 September 1807 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.² He died on 4 April 1848 at age 59 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Pardon Leonard of Taunton was listed in a land transaction November 7, 1820, as a kinsman of Samuel Leonard, deceased, with minor children Sarah, Charlotte, Dilly, Cornelia, and Alexander N. Leonard. Which Samuel Leonard? Pardon Leonard had person sources.³

Betsey Leonard was born on 8 August 1791 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ James Leach and she were married on 26 May 1811. She died on 31 August 1821 at age 30.

E.C.L. says she never married, but G.M.L. says she did. WCL says Miss Betsey Leonard is buried in Field Cemetery, Taunton, while William's offspring are pretty much in the Glebe Street Cemetery per VR listings. Except for William and Samuel, the children of Seth and Ruth are buried in the Field Cemetery. Samuel is buried in the North Taunton Cemetery on the opposite side to Ruth Hoar Leonard, wife of Seth.

The Leonard Dictionary by Lois Badger and Harriott Leonard Standish states that Betsey married David Godfrey, 1818. Betsey Leonard had person sources.²

Experience ("Peddy") Leonard was born on 11 May 1794 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Simeon Woodward and she were married on 21 June 1818. She died MAYBE 1865.

They had four children: Simeon Briggs Woodward, Alexander William Woodward, Addison Perry Woodward, and Peddy Lucretia Woodward. Experience ("Peddy") Leonard had person sources.¹

Sarah Chesebrough was born on 24 December 1663 in Stonington, Connecticut. John Bolton and she were married on 8 March 1683 in Stonington, Connecticut. She died on 9 September 1729 at age 65 in Stonington, Connecticut.

Louisa Burt was born on 20 June 1792 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ Pardon Leonard and she were married on 24 September 1807 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.² She died on 26 September 1870 at age 78 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Right James Leach? Quite a difference in their ages.
