Biography

Deacon Timothy Leonard was born on 13 July 1757 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Susanna Presbrey were married on 11 March 1784 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He died on 13 July 1830 at age 73 in Smyrna, Chenango County, New York.2 He was buried in Smyrna, Chenango County, New York.
He was a Revolutionary soldier, either a private (Capt. Josiah Smith's company, Col. Whitney's regiment) and a corporal in Capt Joseph Franklin's company, Col. Tyler's regiment. He was a deacon in the church. He moved to Troy, NY, then to Smyrna, NY, where he died. Birth sometimes listed as Mansfield, MA.

There's a chance some records have been mixed up between this Timothy Leonard and the Timothy Leonard who was the son of Joseph4 (Elkanah3, Thomas2, James1) Leonard.

1897 Tioga County, PA History - Tri-County Site
TIMOTHY LEONARD was born in Mansfield, Massachusetts, July 3, 1757, a son of Deacon Abiel and Abigail (Elliott) Leonard. His grandfather, Samuel Leonard, was a son of Thomas Leonard, and a grandson of James Leonard, a native of England, who settled at Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1652. James Leonard was the progenitor of the Leonards of Taunton, and the ancestor of the Leonards of Tioga county, Pennsylvania. He erected the first forge or furnace in the Plymouth Colony, which afterwards became the principal one in America. He and his sons often traded with the Indians, with whom they were on terms of friendship, and when King Philip?s War broke out, strict orders were given that the Leonards should not be harmed. Thomas Leonard became a noted physician; was a major in the militia, a justice of the peace, a church deacon, and judge of the court of common pleas from 1702 to 1713. Samuel Leonard, his fourth son, was a man of distinguished piety, and filled the offices of deacon in the church, captain and justice of the peace. Deacon Abiel Leonard, son of Samuel, was born February 26, 1710, and died October 27, 1802. But little of his history is known. Timothy Leonard, the subject of this sketch, married Susannah Presby, of Taunton, Massachusetts, who bore him a family of eight children. He was a man of strict integrity, earnest piety, and inherited the sterling qualities of his ancestors, with the exception that he lacked successful financial ability. He died at Smyrna, New York, July 10, 1830. Deacon Timothy Leonard had person sources.3

We know from their daughter's tombstone that this Hannah was the second wife of Elijah. We know from the marriage announcement that Elijah was a captain when he married Hannah. And he was referred to as Deacon when his and Hannah's daughter was buried in 1799. We know that this Elijah was not the Elijah who married Hannah Peirce in Dighton in 1780 -- this Elijah's wife was still alive. We know that Hannah Pitts and Hannah Peirce are not the same person, although both were from Dighton and both married Elijahs. The marriage dates are different; the marriage records are different; and both Hannahs' families have been established. Note by GML has excerpt from will of Edward Leonard dtd. 11 Dec 1837 mentioning sister Sarah, sister Hannah Andrews, niece Persis, nephew Elijah Leonard, cousin Simeon, other names. This will is worth checking out because it mentions so many relatives, some of whom appear to be missing in the records. Capt. Edward Leonard had person sources.2 He was baptized on 19 June 1768 at Church of Christ in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Biography

Elkanah Leonard was born on 30 December 1727 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He and Deliverance Smith were married on 26 September 1751 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 He and Sarah Leonard were married on 21 June 1759 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.3 He died on 12 February 1802 at age 74 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.4
Elkanah was a Lt. in the militia, Surveyor of Highways, and Deputy Sheriff for many years.

ECL's information on children appears to be incomplete. He mentions "Possibly they had the following children also" and lists Elkanah, David, John, Jonathan, Jonathan, Sally, Jenne, and Johanna as possibles. Elkanah's will mentions his wife, Sarah, and four children: Thomas Frederick, Elizabeth, George, and Nathaniel. If there were others, they must have predeceased him. Thomas Frederick was the executor of Elkanah's estate. He had received Elkanah's real estate and homestead in a deed dated 4 April 1795, along with all the tools, cattle, etc., in the homestead farm and Elkanah's rights and privileges in the 16 Shilling Purchase. Thomas Frederick also received Elkanah's pew in Rev. Turner's church. Sarah received all the bog ore and iron on Elkanah's lands until her decease, and then these reverted to Thomas Frederick. Each of the other children received $5.00. Elkanah Leonard had person sources.5
