Biography

Noah Leonard was born on 17 March 1765 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He and Mehitable Richmond were married on 13 February 1787 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 He died on 21 February 1844 at age 78 in Augusta, Oneida County, New York.1 He was buried at Parker Cemetery in Augusta, Oneida County, New York.3
His death date from his tombstone in the Augusta Cemetery figures to 1764 vice 1765 (Feb 22, 1844 minus 79 years, unless he was born early in 1765). This is relevant because ECL has his birth date as 1754, which is obviously in error, given information on both his tombstone and in Rev. War pension folder.

He was a soldier in Col. Benjamin Tupper's regiment in 1780-81 for 20 months and 7 days in the Revolutionary War (2 years, 9 mos, discharged at West Point, according to his pension record). He applied for Revolutionary War pension on 8 September 1820, at which time he was living in Oneida Co., NY, a laborer suffering from rheumatic complaints. His wife, Mehitable, was 50 and also infirm (dropsy?). His son, Henry, 18, was an idiot; his daughter, Abigail, 15, was in good health, and his son, Otis, 10, had a disorder in his throat; and finally his mother-in-law, Mehitable Richmond, 80, who was also unable to work. He also lists Simeon Leonard, Isaac R. Leonard, and Noah Leonard, Jr., as children. The papers go on to list the schedule of property he owned.

Samuel Barrows of Jefferson Co., NY, testified in his behalf in September 1819, as did Joseph Bennet of Washington Co., VT, and Abiezer Richmond, Joshua Richmond and Isaac Richmond.

Noah and Joseph are mentioned in the Richmond Genealogy.

He and his wife moved to Augusta, Oneida County, NY, before 1800, where they later died. In the 1790 Census, Noah and his family (4) were living in Middleborough; for the 1800 Census, Noah and his family of 4 were living in Augusta, Oneida Co., NY.

Did Mehitable really die just two days after her husband?

Mrs. Walter K. Adams of Minneapolis, MN, applied for his pension record in 1938. Descendant?

Did Noah have anything to do with Westmoreland Furnace in Oneida Co.?

Biography

Gideon Leonard was born in 1756 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He and Hannah Sprout were married on 19 September 1782 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Published 24 June 1782, "Mr. Gideon Leonard and Miss Hannah Sproutt both of Middleborough." p. 100.1 He died on 17 July 1811 at age ~55 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 He was buried in 1811 in Lakeville Cemetery (Thompson's Hill), Lakeville, Massachusetts.3
He is probably the Gideon Leonard of Middleborough who answered several alarms during the Revolutionary War, serving in Capt. Nehemiah Allen's co., Capt. Amos Washburn's co., and Capt. John Barrow's co. He's listed in the 1800 Census with 1 male child under 10, 1 10-15, himself over 44, one daughter under 10, 2 10-15, and wife 26-44.

If Hannah had married the Gideon (Gedion) Leonard born in 1739, he would have been a living heir at the time his father Joseph died in 1776. But he was not. Joseph 3rd was the single surviving male heir. Gideon Leonard had person sources.4

Biography

John Gallop was born on 25 January 1620 in Mosterne, Dorset, England. He and Hannah ("Ann") Lake were married before 1644 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.1 He died on 19 December 1675 at age 55 in Narragansett Fort, Kingston, Rhode Island.1
He came in 1633 with his mother and three siblings to join his father. He gained the reputation as a great Indian fighter in the Pequot War of 1637. He applied for a home lot in New London, CT by 1651 and in 1654 removed with his family to 450 acres of land he owned on the west side of the Mystic River in what is now Stonington. He was killed 19 December 1675 in the Narragansett Swamp Fight of King Philip's War, where he was a captain.

"(VI) Captain John (5), son of John (4), Gallup , was born in England , and came to this country in 1633 . He was with his father in the engagement off Block Island , and afterwards engaged in the Pequot war. The general court of Connecticut granted him a hundred acres of land for his services in that war. He settled in New London, Connecticut , in 1650-51 . On February 9, 1652-53 , he received three hundred acres of land on the Mystic river , in consideration of his father's military services, and in the next year, one hundred and fifty acres more, about which there had been some disagreement. In 1654 he moved with his family to the east side of the Mystic river , now Stonington , and was one of the early settlers of that town. He was deputy to the general court in 1665-67 . He was also an Indian interpreter. Although he was over sixty years old when King Philip 's war broke out, he joined with Captain John Mason , of Norwich , at the head of the Mohegans . These troops were engaged in the Swamp fight at Narragansett , December 19, 1675 . He was one of the six captains who were killed in this fight." The Genealogical and Family History of the State of Connecticut; William Richard Cutter: 1911. John was buried near the site of the Swamp Fight battleground in Narragansett. A memorial stone was erected to him in Whitehall Graveyard, where his wife, Hannah Lake, is buried. John Gallop had person sources.1,2

She was the Charity Leonard who was member no. 66 in the First Church of North Middleborough.

They were placed on the sides of the Hosue, and the center was occupied by the inhabitants at large. She married the second time to Jabez Perkins of Norwich in 1722 and after his death came back to Middleboro to reside, where she died and is buried by her husband in the precinct cemetery in Middleboro. Biography

John Gallop was born in 1593 in Bridgeport or Mosterton, Dorset, England. He and Christobel Crabbe Brushett were married on 19 January 1617 in Saint Mary's Church, Bridgeport, Dorset, England.1 He died on 11 January 1649 at age ~56 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
He came to Boston and Nantasket in 1630, then resided in Dorchester. He was a fisherman and mariner.

The Gallup Family in America
Many compilations are found which provide an ancestry in England for John GALLUP of Boston, MA. However, such claims likely all have their roots in John D. Gallup's Genealogical History of the Gallup Family in the United States (1893), in which English pedigrees were quoted in support of the claim that John GALLUP of New England was son of John GALLUP and Mary CRABBE of Mosterne, Dorset, England.
Charles Wilson Allen obtained a copy of the subject pedigree and found it had been mis-quoted, publishing his "Gallop Genealogy: Corrections" in Apr. 1963 [NEHGR 114:151-52] and concluding that the claimed Gallup ancestry in England "is not substantiated by this or any other document known to me."
The Gallup ancestry search continues, with Gerald James Parsons' "John Gallop/Gollop of Bridport, Dorchestershire, England, and Boston, Massachusetts" [TAG 68:1 (Jan. 1993), pp. 11-13] detailing the available records, including the marriage of John GALLUP and Christabell BRUCHETT and the baptism of their seven children at St. Mary's Church, Bridport, Dorchestershire, England. Parsons also concluded that "no other records needed to determine John Gallop's parentage and/or his relationship to the other Gollops in Bridport were located."
Available material concerning John GALLOP is reviewed in The Great Migration Begins, Volume II, by Robert Charles Anderson (1995), pp. 725-28, and the Bridport records are included in the article on John GALLOP. In commenting on another publication, the author states that "the section on English ancestry has been superseded and should be ignored." All that is known of the immigrant's birth is that he was born "By about 1593 based on date of marriage."

John GALLUP
- b. about 1593, England; d. Jan. 11, 1649/50, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. John's parentage has not been determined. He was admitted to the Boston church on Jan. 5, 1633/4, and became freeman Apr. 1, 1634 as third in a group of six Dorchester men, but there is no evidence he lived there. His will, dated Dec. 20, 1649 and proved Feb. 9, 1649/50, and the inventory taken Feb. 26, 1649/50 includes properties indicating his occupation of fisherman and mariner. His real estate included "The Island, Called by ye name of Gallupe's Island, Containeinge about 16 acres." Capt. GALLOP piloted arriving ships into Boston Harbor, and in the coastal trade between CT and ME. Married Jan. 19, 1617/8, St. Mary's Church, Bridport, Dorset, England.
Christobel BRUSHETT
- b. 1592, Dorset, England; d. Sep. 27, 1655; Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.
She did not arrive in America with her husband, possibly deciding to delay the journey due to either the young age or soon arrival of her son John, the Younger. It may have taken the encouragement of Rev. John WHITE to have her make the crossing with her four surviving children. Gov. John WINTHROP had written to Rev. WHITE on Jul. 4, 1632: "I have much difficulty to keep John Galloppe here by reason his wife will not come. I marvel at the woman's weakness that she will live miserably with her children there, when she might live comfortably here with her husband. I pray persuade and further her coming by all means: if she will come let her have the remainder of his wages, if not, let it be bestowed to bring over his children, for so he desires: it would be above £40 loss to him to come for her." Christobel was admitted to the Boston Church Jun. 22, 1634. Her will, dated Jul. 24, 1655 and proved Oct. 31, 1655, names her three sons and daughter Joane Joy. The name of her father is uncertain, since it has been given as both Edmund and John.
