Gamaliel Leonard
M, #4239, b. 30 April 1733, d. 12 March 1809
Parents
Biography
Gamaliel Leonard was born on 30 April 1733 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
1 He and
Bethiah Howard were married on 7 November 1754 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
2 He died on 12 March 1809 at age 75 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
3 He was buried at Cemetery in back of school in South Raynham, Massachusetts.
This is the same Gamaliel Leonard as #404 in ECL's manuscript, but he has Gamaliel marrying Deborah rather than Bethiah Howard. There's something amiss here -- were there two different Gamaliel Leonards? Doublechecked -- Bethiah Howard is correct. Other prevalent error is to have Gamaliel the son of his grandparents, John Leonard and Mary King.
He was executor of his sister Caroline's estate.
Gamaliel was a selectman in 1778. His will was probated April 1, 1809, and gives "my wife, Bethiah, sons Gamaliel, Thomas, Simeon, Eliakim, two daughters Phebe and Catherine Jones, two grandchildren -- heirs of Bethia Backus, to my two daughters and granddaughter Phebe Jones, to my granddaughter Cynthia Leonard, and to my grandson, Zadock Leonard." Children are all listed in Raynham VR's, p. 47.
He served in the Revolutionary War (DAR).
There was a Gamaliel Leonard household consisting of 3 males over 16 and 3 females listed in the 1790 Census for Raynham. The Thomas Leonard household is listed next to the Gamaliel Leonard household and consisted of 1 male over 16 and 3 females. Gamaliel Leonard had person sources.

Zadock Kadee Leonard
M, #4241, b. 3 February 1800, d. 23 December 1841
Parents
Biography
Zadock Kadee Leonard was born on 3 February 1800 in Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He and
Caroline Blackman were married on 2 March 1827 in Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He died on 23 December 1841 at age 41 in Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
Mass. Marriages, 1633-1850, lists Zadock as marrying Caroline 22 Feb 1828 in Boston. Their children are listed in Stoughton VR's, p. 195.
There is conflicting information in the Elisha Clark Leonard material about the origin of this Zadock Leonard. A chart from W. F. Robinson included lists Zadock 7, Zadock 6, Nathaniel 5, James 4-3-2-1. I have it here Zadock 7, Zadock 6, Zadock 5, Simeon 4, Elkanah 3, Thomas 2, James 1 from various
sources.
The 1840 Census lists Zadock of Canton with a household of 10, 8 males and 2 females, 5 of whom were 20 and over.
In 1840, Zadock had a tavern at the corner of Church and Neposet Streets. The building was known as Union Hall and passed on to his son, Winthrop, when Zadock died. (Old Stoughton Musical Society records)
A Zadock Leonard changed his name to William Leonard in 1820, according to Bristol Co. Probate Records in New Bedford. Which Zadock? Zadock Kadee Leonard had person sources.

Simeon Lewis Leonard was born on 12 March 1819 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
1 He and
Temperance Ames were married in 1844 in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He and
Mercy Maria Parker were married on 18 March 1855 in Hyannis, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He and

He went to California for a brief period in 1850. He inherited, through Temperance, all the Ames property in the Seapuit area.
ECL: He was a blacksmith and a farmer. He was one of the most prosperous farmers in Osterville. He held a number of offices in the town of Barnstable. He "was a rugged, kindly man, earnest, conscientious." Andrea "Andy" Leonard and Judy Leonard were most helpful in providing information about Simeon and his descendants.
He also married Temperance Ames and Bessie Till, his housekeeper, but had no children by them. Bessie was a widow with two children.
A family story is that Bessie made her step children live in the barn, which may or may not be true. But she did make her husband's children use the back stairs in the house while hers could use the front stairs. Henry, the youngest, was only 4 at the time.
Simeon was a strong, handsome, stern, and sometimes opinionated man who was interested in the advancement of transportation, such as expanding the railroad on Cape Cod. He had a blacksmith shop on Main Street. His sons, James and Henry, changed the Main Street of Osterville by building an improved road from what is now Pond Street north to hear Bumps River Road, subsequently the main road into the village from that direction.
Most of his estate was inherited by his widow, Elizabeth Till, and her children. Little passed to the Leonard children. Simeon Lewis Leonard had person sources.
