Samuel Eddy
M, #209, b. before 15 May 1608, d. 12 November 1687
Parents
Biography
Samuel Eddy was born before 15 May 1608 in Cranbrook, Kent, England. He and
Elizabeth Savory were married in 1636 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
1 He died on 12 November 1687 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
"The Eddy Family in America" devotes several pages to Samuel Eddy and his various land purchases in Swansea and Tiverton, RI.
At his father's death, he was put in the guardianship of his brother Phineas Eddy, who was to provide for his education and apprenticeship in a trade. He became a tailor. At the age of 22 he received an inheritence of 100 pounds from his father's estate. He and his brother, John, purchased passage on the "Handmaid", leaving the port of London on August 10, 1630, and arriving in Plymouth harbor on October 29th after a very stormy 12 weeks at sea. He and John wanted to settle in Boston, but were rejected by the Massachusetts Bay Colony for lack of proper documentation. John finally succeeded and settled in Watertown in 1631. Samuel remained in Plymouth and purchased a dwelling on what is now 34 and 36 Market Street in Plymouth from Experience Mitchell. He was among the poor of the Colony during these early years. In the late 1670's, their sons Caleb and Zachariah convinced them to sell their house in Plymouth and move to Swansea, where they died.
Samuel Eddy was one of the original purchasers of Middleborough, MA. He owned several hundred acres extending into Halifax and owned all of what was later known as Eddyville. According to Weston (History of the Town of Middleborough, 1906), he lived part of the time with his son, Obadiah, who inherited his land.
