Biography

Daniel Nilsson was born on 5 September 1809 in Ruus, Långared Parish, Älvsborg län (Väster Götaland), Sweden.1 He and Märta Catharina Johansdotter were married on 14 July 1834 in Hössna, Älvsborg län (Väster Götaland), Sweden.2 He died on 28 May 1890 at age 80 in Lilla Skogen, Hössna, Älvsborg län (Väster Götaland), Sweden.3
Daniel Nilsson was 25 when he married, and Marta was 26. He is listed as a "dräng" (farm hand), although he was trained as a carpenter. They moved to Stora Gärdet from Hallhult in 1834. They were both employed at Hallhult before moving to Stora Gärdet. He came to Hallhult from Borås in 1833 and left when they married.

Property records show that he bought Stora Gärdet in 1846. About that time, he was working as chief carpenter on the new church at Tvarred. He also worked on the new church in Hössna, which was built about that time. He owned a 1/12 share in Stora Gärdet, according to Hössna Husförhörslängd 1822-1838 AI:4, p. 231. Stora Gärdet had been in his wife's mother's family for several generations. After his father-in-law died, he built Lilla Skogen on a corner of the property for his mother-in-law to live in. Later, he retired and moved to Lilla Skogen with his second wife.

He was a farmer owning Stora Gärdet in Hössna parish, Dufered Rote. In the 1856-1861 Husförhörslängd, Stora Gärdet (literally, "Big Field") is listed in Gardoka Rote, p. 181. This particular page gives the name of his and his wife's parents.

On November 21, 1876, Daniel remarried and moved (see p. 223 Household Examination 1870-76, GID: 1033.20.42300). His second wife was Johanna Niklasdotter, born in 1825 in Örby parish. He is listed as a carpenter. The couple settled at Lilla Skogen (little forest) in Hössna. After Daniel's death, Johanna was reported to have moved to Norway.

The family was also mentioned in Hössna parish church records AI:6, page 135, AI:7, page 155, AI:8, page 181, AI:9, page 171, and AI:10, pages 173 and 223. Original research by the Swedish genealogist, Kerstin Jonmyren, May 2000.

I can't find his birth in Lena parish records (GIS 778.20.70200), but he is in Långared parish records (GIS . Birthdate there ties exactly to what's given in Hössna records. Långared parish shared a pastor with neighboring Lena and Bergstena and was folded into Lena parish for a while. Långared received its own pastor in 1883. Lena-Bergstena parish in Vårgårda municipality, Älvsborg län.

Household Examination 1870-78, p. 173, shows a Sofia Kristina Johansdotter. born December 22, 1848, in Unnaryd, living with them. She may have been household help or a relative. She moved to (see page 159) on November 21, 1876.
