Biography

Isaac Leonard was born before 1680 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He and Mary Guerney? Randall were married on 16 April 1701 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.
James Chilton "Silver Book" lists "probable" children as Isaac, David, and Thomas, but includes no further information. Those in this line of descent will face an impossible task in proving Mayflower ancestry.

In 1713 the family was living in Taunton, North Purchase (later Easton). In March 1726 he sold his house, lands, iron ore, etc. to Eliphalet Leonard and then moved away (Chaffin, History of Easton). They conveyed their homestead to Eliphalet Leonard for 245 pounds. In July 1727, Isaac Leonard of Mendon, MA, bought 132 acres from John Adams in Pomfret, CT. In January 1729, late of Easton, now of Pomfret, CT, he sold to Eliphalet Leonard one-third of an iron mine in Easton.

He lived in Pomfret for a number of years. Listed as inhabitants of Pomfret in 1731 were Isaac Leonard Sr. and Jr., David Leonard, and Thomas Leonard. Isaac traded land with a Joseph Leonard (his brother Joseph?) there in 1732/3. In a deed signed 2 Feb 1736/7, Isaac Leonard, "late of Pomfret," was "now resident in Worcester Shire in York government" when he sold his holdings in Pomfret. No further trace of him or his family can be found in CT records, according to Manning Leonard. This would include children Isaac, David, and Thomas. (Think also Joseph's brother Isaac's children, who have also disappeared).

Did he and his family move to Beekman Patent or nearby? "Worcester Shire in York government" has been interpreted as meaning Westchester County in NY. The Dutchess Co. Tax Lists 1718-1787, Clifford M. Buck (Rhinebeck, NY: Kinship, 1990) lists on p. 185 Isaak & Isaak, Jr., Joseph Leonard, Rambout Precinct, 1738; p. 225, David, Isaac, Isaac, Jr., Jonathan, Joseph, Moses, Seth, Thomas Leonard Beekman Precinct, 1739. (The Settlers of Beekman Patent, Vol 8, p. 51 ff). He was taxed in the south ward of Dutchess Co. in Feb 1737/8. In 1739/40 thru 1748 He was assessed in Beekman Patent. He was a tenant farmer in the Gorea area, later paid 25 pounds for his improvements. He was a customer at the store on Quaker Hill from 1766 to 1771. He died in March 1796, supposedly 112 years old, according to the local paper. Isaac Leonard had person sources.1

Biography

Joseph Leonard was born in 1689 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He and Hannah Jennings were married on 19 November 1712 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He died in 1749 at age ~60.
Joseph was a cooper.

There were five Joseph Leonards in Bridgewater at this time, according to Manning Leonard, and "it's impossible to keep their identities straight." According to the Mayflower Society, Manning has the wrong Joseph moving to Pomfret, CT. (Mayflower Families, Vol. XVII, James Chilton, p. 66). Manning Leonard had Joseph the son of John, and here it is corrected to the Mayflower Society's Isaac. Joseph is 5th generation descendant of James Chilton. All of his children are mentioned in The James Chilton Family, Fifth Generation.

According to Manning Leonard, the births of all of his children were in Bridgewater, MA, except for the youngest, who was born in Pomfret, CT. "The family did not remain long (in Pomfret), and I have found it impossible to trace them." Indeed, no documented trace is to be found in the Ricker Collection of CT VR's.

In 1725 Mary Bailey sold rights to Joseph Leonard of Bridgewater "son of Isaac Leonard decd." Joseph Leonard Jr. of Bridgewater sold 20 martch 1728 "my homestead where I dwell" in Bridgewater, and wife Hannah released right of dower. On 8 April 1728 Joseph Leonard of Bridgewater, cooper, bought land in Pomfret, bounded on the south by land of Isaac Leonard. Joseph Leonard of Pomfret husbandman on 9 Jan. 1732/3 sold to Isaac Leonard of Pomfret "the farm whereon I now live" bounded by land of "my brother Isaac Leonard," witnessed by an Isaac Leonard. On 5 April 1736 Joseph Leonard of Pomfret sold land in Pomfret, acknowledged the next day; he and his family then disappear from the records of Connecticut. (Mayflower Families Through Five Generations by Robert M. Sherman)

Joseph had five sons who may have survived to adulthood and probably had children. The sons are Joseph, Moses, Seth, Timothy, and Ebenezer. In addition, Joseph's cousin Isaac had three sons, Isaac, Thomas, and David, who disappear from the records. Correspondence from Tom Pleuss indicates that these Leonards settled in Dutchess Co. (Beekman Patent). Tax records indicate that David Leonard was taxed 1739/40-47/48, Isaac 1738/39-48, Isaac Jr. 1738/39-1740/41, Jonathan 1738/39-1748, Joseph 1738/39-48, Moses 1739/40-Feb 1762, Seth 1739/40-June 1761, and Thomas 1739/40-1746/47 (Source: Clilifford M. Buck, Dutchess County Tax Lists 1718-1787, Rhinebeck, NY: Kinship, 1990). So it appears the bulk of the two families went to Dutchess Co. from Pomfret, CT. Joseph's 67 acre farm was settled as early as 1744 in Beekman Patent (Dougherty, The Settlers of Beekman Patent).

Timothy, parents unknown, appears in Granville, NY, in the 1790's, but this Timothy is not Isaac's. Ebenezer or his son could be the Ebenezer who appears in Burlington, Otsego Co., NY.

Justus, b. in 1758, d. 12 Apr 1840, lived 52 years in Stephentown, NY, married Catherine Aylesworth 28 Nov 1782. He had a son James who spent much time in Greene Co., NY, also Jerusha b. 1784 and Sophronia. James had a son Justus. Joseph Leonard had person sources.1,2,3

Biography

Benjamin Leonard was born in 1686 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He and Hannah Phillips were married on 15 August 1715 in Dighton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He and Mary Cudworth were married on 13 June 1734 in Freetown, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Or Freetown, MA? He died before 4 July 1749 in Mendham, Morris County, New Jersey.2
He was a cooper.

According to Manning Leonard, no further account of this branch of the family has been found. The reason is that Benjamin and his family moved to the Mendham area of Morris County, New Jersey, about 1740, influenced by Ebenezer Byram, a follower of the "New Light" revival. In 173r8, Benjamin and wife Mary of Berkley, MA, sold a tract of land and meadow to Elkanah Babbit. Under date of March 16, 1737, Benjamin Leonard and wife Mary of Berkley for 620 pounds sell to John Paul of Berkley "my homestead where I now dwell in Berkley." That homestead they purchased of William Phillips, Benjamin's first wife's father. The homestead was in that part of Taunton that became Dighton in 1712 and Berkley in 1735.

He had had difficulty with Rev. Benjamin Allen, pastor of the Second Church of Bridgewater, in 1721. See Manning Leonard, p. 68.

Badger's The Leonard Dictionary has Benjamin dying 6 Dec 1771 in 76th year and gives dates of marriages and children. She quotes sources as Bridgewater VH, p. 103, NEHG Reg. vols. 19 and 21, Richard Newton Genealogy, Solomon Leonard book, and Carver VR's. A will of Joseph Thompson of Mendham, dated 4 Jul 1749, mentions the 15 acres he had purchased of Benjamin Leonard, deceased (The American Genealogist, v. 46, p. 121; NJ Archives, Wills, 2:478), so Benjamin died before that date.

James Chilton "Silver Book" (1978 ed.) lists children of Benjamin and Mary as "probable," except for Huldah.

The old name of Mendham was Roxiticus.

FamilySearch lists a Jesse Leonard, b. abt. 1733 in Thompson, Windham Co., CT as a son who married Deborah and had a son, Solomon, who lived in Lanesborough, Berkshire Co., MA. But Hannah died in 1729, so he would have had to have been by the second wife. This Jesse is said to be a son of Benjamin, although it is more likely that he is a grandson of Benjamin, possible son of Benjamin's son William? Benjamin Leonard had person sources.3,4
