Biography

Nathan Leonard was born on 25 September 1743 in Hardwick, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He and Amittai Cutler were married on 26 November 1766. He died on 10 October 1813 at age 70 in Marcellus (now Sennett), Cayuga County, New York. He was buried at Cemetery in Skaneateles, New York.
He was a cordwainer and captain of militia. He was a minuteman in the summons on 19 April 1775 and in 1778 a captain in Col Nathaniel Wade's regiment. He resided in Hardwick, MA, until after 1777 and subsequently in Shaftsbury, VT, from which place he removed in February 1797 to Marcellus (now Sennett), Cayuga Co., NY (also called Brutus, NY). He moved his family and household effects with oxen and sleighs; the weather being very severe and the roads merely wood roads for the last 50 miles, they suffered considerably from cold and exposure. He built a log house in which he kept a country tavern, afterwards building a frame house for the same purpose. He had much difficulty with defective titles to his lands. He died in Brutus, NY (name changed). DAR Patriot Index.

His large family is listed in NYS DAR Bible VI:145-6. According to Frank Dougherty, " The Settlers of the Beekman Patent VIII," p. 63, Nathan was the son of Benjamin Leonard who died April 12, 1783. This is in direct contradiction with Manning Leonard's work. Nathan Leonard had person sources.1
