During his youth he helped clear the country of forests; after the trees were felled, the logs were often burned and salts made from the ashes, and while boiling the solts he educated himself, studying by the firelight at night. He was noted for his accurate memory and, considering his advantages, gained what may be accounted a good education. He taught school before his marriage and was regarded as a good teacher. At the beginning of the war for the Union, he resided in Ashtabula County, OH, and four of his sons enlisted, the fifth being prevented from following their example on account of being a cripple. In the 1850 Census, he and his family are living in Austinburgh, Ashtabula Co., MI. In the spring of 1867, he removed to Michigan and engaged in farming. Jared Leonard had person sources.1
