Biography

Carl August ("Charlie") Gustafson was born in 1847 in Wallsjö parish, Småland, Sweden. He and Mathilda Carlson were married in 1875 in Sweden. He died in September 1934 at age ~87 in Crosby, Texas.
CARL AUGUST GUSTAFSON. This well-known and enterprising Swede moved to the Crosby community in 1896. He lived near Hutto, Texas, for seven years, where he leased land from the time he came from Sweden with his family in 1889. In addition to two fine properties outside the city, he owns the cotton-gin, sawmill, lumberyard, and blacksmith?s shop in Crosby. He was used to work and sacrifice from his youth, and he has become successful through industriousness, wise deliberation and enterprise. He is also an example of what can be accomplished in every aspect, even when conditions are not the most advantageous. When Mr. Gustafson came from Sweden to Hutto, where all his siblings are living, he was already in debt for his passage and had $2.50 in his pocket. In Sweden he had worked in many areas and had been trained as a carpenter, which was of great help in this country. He was born in Wallsjö parish, Småland, in 1847, married Mathilda Carlson from Björke parish, Småland, in 1875. Into this marriage six children were born. Three of them have died. In Sweden he took part in building barracks on the military bases, bridges and station houses for the railroad and other general enterprises. At the opening of the Eastern Main Railroad-line, he worked at the Nässjö station-house. Mr. Gustafson was a member of the Mission Society in Sweden, but he joined the Swedish Methodist congregation in Hutto when he lived there and was in charge of the building of the Swedish Methodist church. In Crosby. Mr. Gustafson has taken an interest in the church at all times, but it is only in the last several years that an established Swedish church has existed there. Before there was a pastor in the area, Mr. Gustafson often preached, was Sunday school superintendent, and took care of other things in the church. He donated the land where the church and parsonage were later built. He was also in charge of the construction work. The first meeting in this church was held on March 10, 1911. The first congregation that was founded was the American Methodist Church and Mr. Gustafson and his family became members there. Mrs. Gustafson died in 1916. Their only daughter, Anna, is married to pastor Edwin Sahlen, preacher in the Swedish Methodist Church and stationed in Scandia, Kansas. Their sons, Carl and John, the latter married, are helping their father with the work and in the business. One son, Albert, once had a heat-stroke while picking cotton and was totally paralyzed. After many years of suffering he died in 1900. He showed early signs of talent and led a calm, devout life. The following verses were written by him before his death and they show how patiently and hopefully he bore his suffering.

Biography

William Slead was born in 1663 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. He and Sarah Holmes were married about 1683 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. He died on 30 March 1729 at age ~66 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He was buried at Old Slade Burying Ground in Somerset end of Slade's Ferry, Massachusetts.
Henry Brightman and Thomas Cornell bought the land in Fall River opposite land owned by William Slade in 1678, and that year Brightman began rowing people across the Taunton River (really an arm of Narragansett Bay). William Slade started his ferry service two years later, and the Brightman and Slade families then formed a partnership for ferry service that lasted two centuries. Their service ended with the opening of Slades Ferry Bridge in 1876.

The Slade burying ground is about 250 feet northwest of the west end of the Brightman Street Bridge from Fall River to Somerset, near where the Somerset end of the old Slade's Ferry Bridge was located. William Slead had person sources.1
