The faith of those early emigrants both those from England and those migrating within this land gave the courage to leave and consoled those remaining behind. Joshua's letter to his mother-in-law after he and Sally (Sarah) had arrived in Pittsford, NY, expresses this most poignantly.
"Dear Mother,
I take this opportunity to inform you that we enjoy good health, hoping this will find you all enjoying the same unmerited thing. Oh, how thankful ought we to be for all the mercies we receive from our God. When we take into view that he is our creator and preserver that he has been the kind care of us ever since we have had a being and that we were born in a Christian land where we have the Holy word to read and hear the gospel preached and Sabaths and Sanctuary opportunities and all other privileges both temporal and Spiritual our hearts ought to be drawn out in gratitude to him....It was undoubtedly a hard thing to you to have Sally go so far from you as you never experience it before but I hope and trust you are reconciled to it now. I hope you will have it made up to you in the enjoyment of God. Let us know the hand of God is in all things, even in the smallest wants, in him we live and move and have our being.....We have come on very well 20 days from Lynn. We arrived here safe and sound. Sally has enjoyed her health very well ever since.....She seems to be very well contented....We have a good minister here. He is not a theologian but a gospel preacher. Oh what awful dead preaching you have in Eastham and Brewster.........."
Sally's part of the letter speaks more of the loneliness and yet the anticipation of starting this new life with her young husband.
"Dear Mother, I have been expecting a letter from you or some of the family but have not received any as yet. I don't know but you have all forgotten me. I should be very glad to hear from you all. Mother, I expect it's about Thanksgiving time with you. I hope you will all meet together in health on that day. I should like to meet with you if I could but I know I cannot. I enjoy myself very well here. I like this country better than I did Lennox or Lee. Mrs. Hopkins is a fine woman. We stayed a week with her before we commenced housekeeping. She told me I must do just as if I was at home. Give my love to all my brothers and sisters tell them they must all write to me....I shall...I often dream about seeing them all......" (Letter share by Frank Linnell 11a,b15,536, 111).
The Linnells were early members and leaders in the Presbyterian Church in Pittsford, NY. Both Joshua and James were clerks of Session and Elijah was a member of the Board of Trustees. The young Linnell children were baptized in this church and deaths of family members were recorded on the church rolls.
Page 302 - 303
Even before leaving the Cape two of the children had died. Thankful, the twin of Zerviah had died "young" and Uriah was "lost at sea" in 1812. Zerviah was the first to be buried in the Pittsford Cemetery in 1831. Joshua died in 1833 and his wife Sally in 1834 leaving a family of five children. And Uriah died in 1836. These five are known to be buried at Pittsford by their memorial stones. James also died at Pittsford in 1841 but no stone is found for him.
Joshua was a "chair maker by trade and the effluvia from the paint affected his lungs, he died in 1834 of consumption at the age of 39" (letter from Charles E. 11a,b15,54, written in 1861 to Joseph Linnell 117,612,2, of Granville, OH. Joseph, a school teacher, had been seeking his relationship to other Linnels over 100 years ago). "Mother survived our Father but a short time, 16 months, when she also died of the same disease. She was always rather delicate however and being obliged to attend upon Father for ao long a time (was confined to his room about 12 months) hastened her death." The children were divied among the larger family to raise. Elijah, Sarah and Sophia were sent back to the Cape to Sarah's family. Joseph, the oldest then 16 years old, went to work on a nearby farm, and Charles was taken by Uncle Elijah to raise.
11 Apr 1818 Letter from Congregational Church, Lee, MA received into Presbyterian Church, Pittsford, NY
5 Apr 1822-1826 Clerk of Session, Pittsford Presbyterian Church
28 Apr 1830-1833 Trustee of Pittsford Presbyterian Church.
