Biography

Samuel Leonard was born on 6 December 1750 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He and Anna Wetherell were married about 1767. He died on 10 October 1816 at age 65 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
According to documents in this line, Samuel was the son of Russell Leonard, rather than James Leonard. Check sources for all information relating to James, Samuel, and Russell. The Leonard Standish Leonard Dictionary (typescript) gives as a reference the Shaw Family Book, Taunton Vital Records, History of Northfield, MA, also data which belonged to the mother of Mrs. Standish. Ralph Russell was a partner of James and Thomas Leonard in the Taunton iron works. Check to see if his or any of his relatives daughters married into the Leonard line. (Answer was "no" according to an authority on the Russell Genealogy.) According to tradition and a book, History of Bristol County, MA, Russell and Samuel Leonard were in the iron business, Russell being the great-grandfather of Job Mason Leonard. Ralph Leonard's information have the line as Russell, Samuel, Job, and then Job Mason Leonard (Hurd's History of Bristol County, p. 651). Elsewhere, Hurd has James Leonard and Eunice Smith in Russell's place.

Samuel's children are listed on page 20, Vol. 54 of Raynham VR's.
Adding to confusion about Samuel is that there were several Samuel Leonards in Raynham at this time. No reference has yet been found for a Russell Leonard.

There were two Samuel Leonard households in Raynham in the 1790 Census. One had 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, and 4 females. The household of Samuel Leonard, Jr. had 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, and 2 females.

Biography

Jemima Leonard was born about 1746 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. Thomas Williams and she were married in 1779. She died on 7 March 1838 at age ~92 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
There was a Jemima Leonard born in Bridgewater May 8, 1717, daughter of Benjamin Leonard and Hannah Philips. She married Henry Axtell, b. 1716. Their children were born in Morristown and Mendham, NJ (so they were living in NJ). Benjamin was of the Isaac2 Solomon1 line. Their children's names were Jemima, Lydia, Hannah, Benjamin, William, and Caleb. Another Jemima Leonard married Jacob Perkins, born 20 May 1710 in Middleboro, Plymouth Co., MA. This Jemima Leonard was the daughter of Elkanah Leonard and Charity Hodges and is accounted for in the James-Thomas-Elkanah line. A third Jemima Leonard married Joseph Burt and had children in the 1780-1790 time frame. And MA VR's note a Jemima Washburn who married Josiah Leonard in Bridgewater. No record of this marriage has been found, nor any children of the marriage, nor a death of Jemima Williams.

Biography

James Leonard was born about 1750 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Eunice Smith were married on 25 October 1770 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 14 July 1793 at age ~43 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Death date unverified.
He was called James 3rd by his father. He is referred to as James Leonard 4th in Taunton VR of marriage. James 3rd married Polly Woodward Jan. 24. 1788, in Taunton (Taunton VR's). Taunton records call him James 4th., m . Eunice Smith. (In cases where there were multiples of the same surname and given name, they were numbered in order of birth: the oldest 1st or Sr., then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. This was to make it clear in legal documents which of those with the same given names and surnames was meant.)

His father's will dtd. December 6, 1787, left him his father's shoemaker's tools. He had a house near Winnicunnett Pond near the border of Norton and Taunton. That's the area where James who married Polly Woodward lived, as did James' children.

James, son of James, husband of Eunice Smith, mentioned in the Field Genealogy, p. 235. Eunice signed a deed which he (James) gave to Nathaniel Field in 1792.

Harriet Standish Leonard leaves a query: Did James and Eunice also have a son, Daniel, who m. Ruth Hoar Leonard, int. 1823, and his brother George, who m. widow Ruth H. Leonard? This seems to be the information in the White, Lothrop, and Field genealogies and also from Emma Burt, a genealogist from Taunton, and the Franklin Pratt papers.

Was this the James Leonard 4th of Taunton, cordwainer, who leased a parcel of land on the east side of Mill River from William Leonard and Sarah Leonard (37:460, 2 p. 1759)? Which William did he lease from?

Taunton VR's say John Leonard, son of James and Eunice, widow, died in almshouse 2 June 1870 -- 90 years.

Were James and Eunice married 25 Oct 1750? Error? Was James born in Bridgewater ca. 1732? Was he born in 1723, per DAR? He served in the Revolutionary War (DAR).

There are a number of questions pertaining to this James Leonard. He may have been the James Leonard who moved out to Onondaga, NY, before 1791 and was in Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY, at the time of the 1810 Census, dying in 1815 in Pompey. A David Leonard b. 1 Oct 1787, d 19 Jan 1850, Taunton, was also residing there in1810.

The children James Leonard and Eunice Smith are said to have had are James b.1772, Olive b. 1776, Eunice b. 1780, Jonathon b. 1780, Elizabeth, Rebrcca, Mary, Lois, David b. 1787, and Daniel. James' will i Pompey listed wife Eunice, sons James, David, John, and Daniel; daughters Olive Randall, Elizabeth Woodman, and Rebecca Monk. Daughter Eunice m. Alpheus Drake had children Rhoda, Eunice, Mary, Lucy, and son Asa. also youngest daughter Lois. James' son James died in Burlington, VT, 15 Apr 1831.

Eunice Smith was born about 1750 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. James Leonard and she were married on 25 October 1770 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
Other info lists his wife as Mercy. She is said to have had a son named JOHN.

The most likely Eunice Smith in MA VR's was born March 23, 1759, in Wrentham of Matthew and Sarah Smith. But if birthdate was really 1732, then she would have had to have different parents.

James Leonard was born on 13 May 1772 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He and Polly Woodward were married on 24 January 1788 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Mary ("Polly") Shaw were married on 13 July 1797 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He died on 15 April 1831 at age 58 in Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont.
Check: One source says he died as an infant. ECL notes a James Leonard (possibly the son of Joseph Leonard and Ruth White) "went to New Orleans." His supposed parents were from Taunton, and he (or another James) was born in Middleboro. He would have married before he was 16. Birth and death info may be wrong.

John W. Leonard says that this James is the son of James who married Jemima Hereford. But that would seem to skip a generation. There's much to do to prove up this set of relationships.
