SonJonathan Leonard+ (b. 10 April 1726)
SonSeth Leonard+ (b. 1729, d. before August 1774)

Biography

William Leonard was born between 1680 and 1690. He and Sarah Bolton were married on 20 February 1709 in Kingston, RI (or MA?) He died after 1750 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.
The birthdate and place of William Leonard are unknown in the records relating to his marriage. Manning Leonard, who was doing the genealogy of the Solomon Leonard line, put a query in the NEHGS Register asking for information about William. He did not find a connection to the Solomon Leonard line. ECL/GML postulate that he was of the Solomon Leonard line because he lived in Bridgewater. He lived in Bridgewater after he was married; it's unclear where he lived before his marriage to Sarah Bolton. Nahum Mitchell, p. 236, mentions "#13. Wm. Leonard m. Sarah D. of John Bolton: had Wm 1710, John 1711, Sarah, 1714, James 1716, Samuel 1718, Silas, 1721, Mercy, 1723, Jonathan, 1726. James m. Jemima Heiford, perhaps 1737." There is no mention of a Seth.

Harriott Leonard Standish in the Leonard Dictionary postulates that he is "prob. son of Uriah, b. abt. 1687-90; d. Kingston, RI; m. Sarah Bolton February 10, 1708-09 by J.P. Thos. Mumford. She m. 2nd Samuel Perry, Bridgewater (or was there another Sarah Leonard who m. Samuel Perry in January 1710?). She was the dau. of John Bolton and b. 1690 (Cheseborough Gen.) Ch.:

- William, b. 1709-10, Jan. 26. m. ? Ruth Hoar ?
- John, b. 11-28-1711
- Sarah, b. 2-23-1713-14; m. Isaac Pool (Mitchell of Bridgewater says not this Sarah)
- James, b. 10-8-1716; m. Jemima Herford (Heiford); he d. 1787.
- Samuel C., b. 1717-18; (January 14)
- Silas, b. 1720-21 (Mar. 14)
- Mercy, b. 1723 (Oct. 14)
- Jonathan, b. 1726 (Apr. 10)

Was there also a child, Seth, b. in 1729, who married Ruth Hoar, as Cheseborough genealogy suggests?

Note: Taunton Rec. says Wm. son of Joseph, b. March 26, 1690. Another record calls Wm. son of Thomas2, Henry1.
Note: Wm. Learned of Woburn, 1646, spelled his name same as above. They spelled Leonard, Lennard, and Learned.
Note: The Boltons were from Stonington, Conn. (Ref. Kingston, RI Rec.; Bridgewater Vit. Rec.; Mitchell's History of Bridgewater, p. 236, Fields Genealogy, p. 235)"

North Kingston Marriages lists "Learnard, William, and Sarah Bottom; m. by Thomas Mumford, Justice, Feb. (10)1708-9." The diaries of Thomas Minor mentions marrying John bolten, Rezident in stoneington and sarah Cheesbrough of the same Town Thursday the .8. day day at the mill...'

Hypothesis: This William Leonard was neither of the James or Solomon line, but was a later immigrant of a different line.

In the Bridgewater VR's, all children except Seth are listed with full birth dates as children of William and Sarah, with Leonard spelled Lennard (for whatever significance that may be). Seth is not listed at all. Also, in Mitchell's History of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Seth is not listed among the children of William and Sarah, although all the other children are listed. A search finds no Seth Leonard in the book. Circumstantial evidence would lead one to believe that the Seth listed here was the son of either William Leonard (Uriah2, James1) and or was the firstborn son of Seth3 (Uriah2, James1) and Deborah Hall. Joseph's son William was born on the date set by Harriott, but married Abigail Wetherell. Children overlap, so not second wife. Uriah's son William married Anna Barney, and again the children overlap.

Leonard Dictionary also has William dying in Kingston, RI.

Leonard Dictionary mentions "William, son of Joseph, b. March 26, 1690. Another Record calls William son of Thomas2, Henry1." Offers as references Kingston, RI records, Bridgewater VR; Mitchell's History of Bridgewater, p. 236, Field Genealogy, p. 235.

There is a record in the Norwich, CT, library (Otis Library) of a Thomas Minor who performed the marriage of one of the couples in the William Leonard - Sarah Bolton line, married at Minors Mill, according to Ward Leonard. "Thursday the 8th day I was at the mill and maried John bolten Rezident in stoneington and sarah Cheesbrough of the same Towne..."

The y-dna of one descendant of William and Sarah tests in haplogroup R1b, while Solomon's descendants are in haplogroup I2b and James' are in haplogroup J2. The y-dna of two descendants of Seth test in haplogroup J2. This would seem to indicate Seth was not a child of William and Sarah.

A Bridgewater land conveyance, LR 37:460, gives or leases land from William and Sarah Leonard to his son James Leonard 4th, cordwainer. William is listed as a cordwainer. Wife signed as Sarah S. Leonard. Deed was signed 3 Dec 1750, witnessed by Edward Hayward and Abiel Williams, and registered 4 Dec 1750 by James Williams, Reg.. Land was on the easterly side of the Mill River, south of Winnecunnet Pond, Norton, and apparently near where the James Leonard family had a forge.

Biography

Sarah Bolton was born on 26 December 1683 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.1 William Leonard and she were married on 20 February 1709 in Kingston, RI (or MA?) Samuel Perry and she were married about 1730 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
There's a question as to whether there were two Sarahs, one born in 1683 who died before 1690 and a second one born in 1690. The first was christened in the First Church of Dorchester 23 June 1685. A Sarah Bolton d. 30 March 1694 in Newbury.

Biography

William Leonard was born on 26 January 1709 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. He and Sarah Hoar were married on 3 May 1744.1
The Field Genealogy has this William Leonard marrying Ruth Hoar (instead of Seth Leonard), while the White Genealogy has him marrying Sarah Hoar. Norton T. Hoar's book, A Record of Descendants of Hezekiah Hoar) doesn't include either (per Roz Edson e-mail, 2-4-07).

If White Genealogy is correct, then William and Sarah had a son, William, who married (1) Hannah Thayer, and (2) Dinah Burt. After much searching, that is what is reflected here. Two descendants have tested in haplogroup R1b, while James Leonard descendants are uniformly in haplogroup J2a. Implication: William Leonard who married Sarah Bolton was not a descendant of James.

Temple/Lincoln genealogy on ancestry.com lists William's wife as Sarah, d. 15 Nov 1774 in Taunton. Source is not explicitly listed -- seems to indicate "cemetery." There may be a clue in where Sarah is buried and grave marker.

A note in Badger/Standish's "Leonard Dictionary," p. 144, says that children with * (includes Seth, Barney, Sarah, and Daniel) to be the children of William and Sarah (Hoar) Leonard, instead of Seth and Ruth (Hoar) Leonard, according to Mrs. Lucinda Leonard Field Lincoln from information sent by Mrs. Cliff Field. Lucinda was a descendant of this branch, being a daughter of William Leonard and Hannah Thayer and William in turn being the son of William and Sarah. According to this version, William who married Sarah Hoar was the son of William Leonard and Ann Barney (Leonard Dictionary, p. 192, page not numbered).

It appears that William Leonard and Sarah Hoar get confused with William Leonard and Sarah Bolton.

No further information can be found for the children other than William and Sarah. Origins of Sarah Hoar are unknown, although there were two Sarahs born about 1710. No further information is available about William and Sarah Leonard.

Biography

James Leonard was born on 8 October 1716 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.1 He and Jemima Heiford were married on 17 February 1737 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.2 He died before 6 February 1787.
His will mentions nine children. His son, James, was the sole executor. Only four children are listed, so more research needs to be done to identify the other five. Is a copy of his will available somewhere? Bristol Co. Probate Court? He left his house to wife Jemima and shoe making tools to his son James.

His name was spelled Lennard in Bridgewater VR's. None of his children appear to be listed in the Bridgewater VR's.

In the Genealogy of the Chesebrough Family, the children are listed as: #915 James, #916 Runy, #917 Susannah, and #918, Samuel, m. Anna Wetherell.

He received land from his father via LR 37:461 on 4 Jan 1750. He sold land in Taunton to his son, James, May 1, 1774, countersigned by his wife Jemima.

They were married by Isaac Johnson, Justice of the Peace.

Field Genealogy, p. 236: "...Richard Field had sold to James Leonard, of Taunton, the deceased, all his share in the two farms, which was two-sevenths thereof, he being the eldest son and entitled to a double share; that said James Leonard had sold one half of said double share to his son, James, who had sold to Nathaniel Field one half of what he bought from his father...""...James Leonard, who bought the double share of Richard Field in the two farms, was the son of William and Sarah (Bolton) Leonard, b. in 1716, m. in 1737, Jemima Heiford, d. in 1787, leaving a widow, Jemima; James, the son, m. in 1770; Eunice Smith, his wife (Eunice) signed the deed which he gave to Nathaniel Field in 1792. Neither James could have been the husband of Wealthy Field." (Wealthy Field b. abt. 1753 was the daughter of Zebulon Field and Patience Wetherell.) The question, then, is who was the James married Wealthy.

He served as a private in the Revolutionary War (DAR). The DAR has his birth date as 1716, death date as 12 Aug 1786, and marriage to Jemima Hefford. James Leonard had person sources.2

Biography

Jemima Heiford was born in 1718 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts. James Leonard and she were married on 17 February 1737 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County Massachusetts.1 She died after 1787.
Her last name was also spelled Hefford in the records of Bridgewater. Other variations: Heyford, Heiford, Hayford. ECL's notes refer to her as Jemima Heiford. Mitchell's History of Bridgewater also refers to her as Jemima Heiford.

She might be the daughter of John Heiford and Lydia Peirce, who married March 19, 1706, in Bridgewater.

A widow Jemima Leonard died in Worthington, MA, August 20, 1825.

A Jemima Leonard is listed in the 1790 Census for Taunton as head of a household of 6 females, no males. She is listed next to James Leonard 2nd with a household of 9 (l male over 16, 3 males under 16, and 5 females), and James Leonard 3rd (household of 3, 1 male over 16 and 2 females). In the same column are familes with whom this branch of the Leonards intermarried (Fields, Lincolns, Eddys, Smiths, Woodwards, etc.). On the same Census page are Benjamin Leonard (3 males over 16, 2 males under 16, 3 females), William Leonard (1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, 4 females), and Ichabod Leonard (4 males over 16, 4 females).
