In the 1830 Census, the household consisted of 2 children under 9 and 2 adults 20-29. In the 1840 Census, there were 4 children and 2 adults.

In the 1850 Census, Jesse was a laborer living in Sutton with his wife Martha and their children: Jesse, Jr, 19, Elijah or Elizabeth, 12, Delia, 6, and Fanny, 9. In the 1860 Census, Jesse, Martha, Jesse, Jr., 29, Elijah, 22, Delia, 16, and a William Black, 13, were residing together in Sutton. Jesse's and Martha's ages are not consistent between the two censuses -- 49 and 46 in the 1850 Census and 56 and 55 in the 1860 Census.
