James Leonard
M, #52243, b. 21 August 1750, d. 6 May 1837 or 1817
Biography
James Leonard was born on 21 August 1750 in Whitehall, Washington County, New York. He may have been born 23 Sep 1750 or 1752 or 21 Aug 1770 in CT. He and
Unknown were married. He died 6 May 1837 or 1817 in Veteran Chemung County, New York, or Whitehall, New York. He was buried in Newton-Van Duzer Cemetery, Veteran, Chemung County, New York.
Headstone reads "66 y 8 mo 15 d" Born Conn A Soldier of the American Revolution," per Find-a-grave. Date supposedly reads 6 May 1837, which would be consistent with his appearing in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 Censuses, but would calculate to a birthdate of 21 Aug 1770, probably too young to have served in the Rev. War. Misreading of gravestone?
James is listed by the DAR, #A069300. He's also listed by the SAR, #54580. He's used by Otis Augustus Leonard for membership with a birth date of 1752, Whitehall, Washington Co., NY. He's documented as a Rev. War veteran by the state of Vermont, Vol 103, p. 50. Name of wife is not given.
In the 1800 Census for Whitehall, there are two Leonard households listed. Abraham Leonard heads one, which includes 1 M over 45 (James?), 1 M 26-44, and 1 F 26-44. The 2nd household is John Leonard's, with 1 M 26-44, 1 F 16-25, and 1 F under 10.
The 1810 Census for Whitehall lists James Leonard with a household of 6: 1 M 26-44, 1 F 26-44, 4 kids under 16: 3 boys and 1 girl.. John Leonard has a household of 6: 1 M 26-44, 1 F 26-44, 2 kids under 16, 2 kids 16-24. There is no Abraham.
The 1820 Census for Whitehall lists James Leonard with a family of 8; John Leonard with a family of 10.
The 1830 Census for Whitehall lists James Leonard with a family of 10; John Leonard, Jr. with a family of 5; John Leonard with a family of 4; and King S. Leonard with a family of 4.
The 1840 Census for Whitehall lists John Leonard with a family of 4. The 1840 Census for Chemung Co. lists John Leonard in Veteran with a family of 7 and another John Leonard in Dix with a family of 4.
James would have been about 40 years old by the 1790 Census (perhaps 20 if second calculation is correct), presumably married, and with one or more children, so he should appear in the census.
With a James Leonard appearing in the 1820 and 1830 Censuses for Whitehall, one wonders if the Rev. War James (who may have died in 1817) had an intervening generation -- a son James born about 1775 -- who married a woman named Eli (Eley) who was born abt. 1784 and moved with the family to Erin (Veteran), Chemung Co., where she is found in the 1850 Census living next to King Solomon Leonard. It would appear that the James b. abt. 1775 would have died before 1840, since he doesn't appear as a head of household in 1840 (nor does Eli, who may have been living with another son and therefore not listed as a head of household). If the family didn't move to Chemung County until after the 1830 Census, one wonders why/how the Rev. War James was buried there, unless he died in 1837 (or did his family just erect a monument to him there, staking a place for his descendants to be buried?).
If James had a household of 10 in the 1820 Census, it would appear that we're missing some children of his in later censuses.
Checked Winhall, Bennington Co., VT -- James not listed there.
