Dr., Col. George Leonard
M, #2829, b. 4 July 1729, d. 26 July 1819
Parents
Biography
Dr., Col. George Leonard, was born on 4 July 1729 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
1 He and
Experience White were married on 27 November 1759. He died on 26 July 1819 at age 90 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
2 George held many offices: Register of Probate, a Royal Councillor, Judge of Probate, Chief Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, Representative to the first, third, and fourth US Congress, Speaker of the MA House of Representatives, Colonel of militia, Presidential elector in 1804. He owned an estate of 1500 acres. He was a graduate of Harvard 1748. He lived to be 90. "He was a man of strict integrity, mild disposition, and a sociable companion." (NEHGS 1851 p. 408). He was commander of the Third Regiment of the County of Bristol in 1774.
From the Diary of John Adams: "June 8, 1762. Went to Taunton Court, the land of the Leonard; three Judges of the Common Pleas. Of that name each of them has a son who was or at college. The Hon. George, the lst Justice, seems to be arbitrary. He committed two old gentlemen who were nearly 80 years old to the custody of an officer for only speaking loud. A check, a reproof, an admonition would have been enough. He was unwilling that the Sessions should adjourn for an hour to take the verdict of the jury upon a presentment for riot but would have the jury kept together all night till the Court should sit again the next morning. No other Court in the Province superior or inferior would have thought of keeping the jury up. He broke in abruptly on Bob Paine. He did not think it right to run out against the King's witnesses. For his part he did not like to hear it 3 or 4 times over. Thus the haughty tyrant rules the country." The three Judges referred to above were George, brother Ephraim, and cousin Zephaniah.
It appears that George Leonard, probably this one, did a fair number of transactions involving bar iron in place of money in the late 1700's-early 1800's (papers at OCHS).

Rev. Abiel Leonard
M, #2842, b. 5 November 1740, d. 14 August 1777
Parents
Family 2: Mary Greene (b. February 1741, d. 13 January 1818)
Biography
Rev. Abiel Leonard was born on 5 November 1740 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He and
Dorothy Huntington were married on 26 April 1764 in Norwich, Connecticut.
1 He and
Mary Greene were married on 8 May 1766 in Bristol, Rhode Island. He died on 14 August 1777 at age 36 in Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut.
1 He graduated from Harvard, 1759, Yale 1766, and DD from Princeton 1767. Pastor, First Congregational Church, Woodstock, CT. Chaplain to the Continental Army under General Washington at Boston in 1776. Note in record "cut his throat." died June 1778 -- must be wrong -- he died August 14, 1777 at Danbury, CT.
His brother George was a Loyalist and removed with his son, George, to New Brunswick in 1783. (Sabine's Loyalists)
According to ECL's notes, he was a chaplain to the Continental Forces (appointed chaplain of Knox's Continental Artillery in 1776) under General Washington at Boston in 1776. He preached the sermon on evacuation day in the present edifice of Christ Church in Cambridge in the presence of Washington. The text of his sermon was Exodus xiv-25. "And he took off their chariot wheels and they drove them heavily; so that the Egyptians said, 'let us flee from the face of Israel, for Jehovah fighteth for them against the Egyptians.'" He was with the troops through the New York campaign. He was called home because of the illness of his child in 1777. He overstayed his furlough a few days and upon his return was met at Danbury that he had been superceded and censured. This affected him so much that he shot himself (or cut his throat?) at 4 p.m. in the afternoon (according to his Bible). He was evidently a distinguished preacher and clergyman. Letters from George Washington to Abiel Leonard and one to the Church at Woodstock asking them to extend Abiel's leave from the church are in the possession of his descendants (at one time,Mr. Horace Everett and Mrs. Leonard Everett of Council Bluffs, IA).
Copy of the letter from Washington to the church:
"To the Church and Congregation at Woodstock, Connecticut:
Mr. Leonard is a man whose exemplary life and conversation make him highly esteemed by every person who has the pleasure of his acquaintance. It therefore can be no surprise to us that they are not willing to part with him.
His influence in the Army is great. He is employed in the glorious work of attending to the morals of a brave people who are fighting for their liberties -- the liberties of the people of Woodstock -- the liberties of all America. We therefore hope that knowing how nobly he is employed, the Congregation at Woodstock will cheerfully give up to the Public a gentleman so useful and when by the blessing of this kind Providence this glorious and unnarrated struggle for our liberties is at an end we have not the least doubt that Mr. Leonard with redoubled joy be received in the arms of a Congregation so endeared to him as the good people of Woodstock. This is what is hoped for; this is what is expected by the Congregation of Woodstock's well-wishers and very humble servant.
Signed: George Washington Israel Putnam"
His Bible was handed down to his wife, Mary, who was living in Lewiston, NY, with a daughter and her husband, Jonathan Bell. Eventually, it found its way to the Leonards in Missouri and is now part of the Abiel Leonard papers at the State Historical Society of Missouri at Columbia, MO. This copy was made by Gregory Bell Smith, Jonathan's great-great-grandson.
There is a book about Abiel Leonard titled "Abiel Leonard, Yankee Slavholder, Eminent Jurist, and Passionate Unionist" by Dennis K. Boman. Rev. Abiel Leonard had person sources.

Col. Daniel Leonard
M, #2850, b. 18 May 1740, d. 27 June 1829
Parents
Family 1: Anna White (b. 25 February 1741, d. 14 April 1768)
Biography
Col. Daniel Leonard was born on 18 May 1740 in Norton, now Mansfield, Massachusetts. He and
Anna White were married on 2 April 1767 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
1 He and
Sarah Hammock were married on 4 March 1770 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
2 He died on 27 June 1829 at age 89 in London, England.
3 Daniel grew up in the part of Taunton that later became Mansfield and was a graduate of Harvard, 1760, ranked 2nd in his class. He also received a degree from Yale in 1766. He was admitted to the bar and began his practice in Taunton. He became King's Attorney in 1769. He and Robert Treat Paine were elected members of the Massachusetts General Court from Taunton in 1773 and 1774.
Daniel married 2nd Sarah Hammock, whose father had left her a fortune. This enabled Daniel to live in high style. Daniel "always liked the flashpots of life. He wore hats and clothes trimmed with gold lace and travelled from Taunton in a gorgeous coach and four," according to ECL, who devoted 7 pages of his manuscript to describing Daniel. He was satirized by Mercy Warren in "The Group" as Beau Trumps, a play on his fancy dress. (John Adams diary: "Velvet coat, neckerchiefs and wrist falls of exquisite Irish lace, satin trousers, and silver embroidered on his cocked hat" and his enjoyment of playing cards.)
Daniel had servants. Ann Barney took care of his daughter and accompanied him to Halifax, London, and Bermuda. His coachman was Spencer Lyne.
He was bred to the law, and was, before the Revolution, a member of the General Court, an able political writer, and, according to President Adams, "supported the Whig (Revolutionary) cause with great eloquence and energy" until 1772. He was possessed of brilliant talents and acquired great popularity, because of which Governor Hutchinson was led to "exercise his blandishments upon him, and, as he seldom failed when he applied them in all their force, the tempter prevailed" and Mr. Leonard became a Loyalist. In 1774 he was an addresser of Hutchinson and was appointed a Mandamus Councillor the same year. He wrote defending the Loyalist (Tory) position under the signature of Massachusettsensis, answered by John Adams under the signature of Novanglus.
He lived in Taunton on the Green near where the Court House stands. On the day in 1774 he became a Mandamus Councillor, he was driven from Taunton by a mob. He removed to Boston, then to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1776 (with family of 9) and finally to England to reside. In 1778 he was proscribed by the General Court of Massachusetts and his property confiscated. He was appointed Chief Justice of Bermuda in 1781, holding that position until 1815 when he returned to London at age 75. Daniel visited the United States in 1799 and 1808. His father, Ephraim, left his property to his grandson Charles, provided he take an oath of allegiance to the United States.
According to the American of August 2, 1829, he was killed by the accidental discharge of a pistol. He was a native of Massachusetts, a classmate at Harvard with John Adams, and was one of the last of the Loyalists that were expatriated at the time of the Revolution. His remains were brought back to Newport and interred there.
For more detailed information about his life and times, please see "Two Men of Taunton" by Ralph Davol, Riverside Press, 1912. It is the story of two Leonard descendants, Robert Treat Paine and Daniel Leonard 1740-1829. Both were well-known and associated with the leaders of the American Revolution. See also Fanny Leonard Koster's book on the genealogy of the Leonard family, pp. 87-91. See Genealogical Memoir of the Leonard Family, pp. 410-411, for proof. Also NEHGS Register, 1851, p. 409-411.
