Biography
Charles Bradford ("Charlie, Bennie Leonard, Chilly Bean") Leonard was born on 25 February 1906 in Providence, Rhode Island. He and
Dolores Kells were married on 12 October 1933 in Cranston, Providence County, Rhode Island. He and
Etta Fisher were married on 22 April 1964 in Elkton, Maryland.

Charlie was born February 25, 1906, to Walter Bradford Leonard and Edith Annie Regester in East Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from the Vinyard Street Elementary School and Central High School in Providence, RI, in 1925, post graduating at Central a year and a half to take additional course work in jewelry manufacture. He was active in dramatics in high school and was manager of the cross country team. He graduated from Brown University, 1929. He was an active and enthusiastic Boy Scout from 1918 until the 1930's, holding most ranks up to Assistant Scout Master. He took additional course work at Rhode Island College and Harvard University.
He worked for Brown and Sharp Manufacturing Co. in the accounting department, 1930-32, then became a teacher and Assistant Principal, Valentine Almy School, Cranston, R.I., 1932-38, Superintendent of Schools, Little Compton, RI, 1938-48, and Superintendent of Schools, Scituate, RI, 1948-63. He retired at the relatively young age of 58 because, he said, "longevity doesn't run in the Leonard family" and he wanted to enjoy a few years in the sun. At Valentine Almy and J.F. Wilbur schools, he concentrated on building up the athletic programs and later developed expertise in building schools. While Union Superintendent of Scituate and Foster, he led the construction of the first consolidated elementary school in Foster, the Isaac Paine School (Foster had one-room schools scattered around town until that time). While in Scituate, he led the building of the town's first high school.
He married (2) Etta Anthony, a neighbor, a few years after his first wife, Dolores Kells, died unexpectedly. He and Etta moved to Florida in 1966, buying a small cottage in Grove City (Englewood) for $11,000. Etta died unexpectedly of cancer in 1981. He did not remarry, although had a constant companion, Mae Malcomsen, who predeceased him in 1996 at age 96. That seemed to take the will to live out of him, and he died two years later after a broken hip operation.

Her baby book records her birth as Saturday, April 6, 1912, at 11:47 p.m. The doctor was H. G. Partridge and the nurse, her grandmother, F. Lodema Kells. She weighed 8 1/2 lbs. She grew up in the Eden Park section of Cranston, RI, at 71 Hawthorne Avenue and attended public schools there. She played the piano. After graduating from high school in Cranston, RI,, she worked as a stenographer.
She took great pleasure in visiting her cousins, the Swedish cousins in particular. She was the family genealogist and kept the various branches of the family in contact with one another. Muriel McKenzie was her favorite, being the same age. She was a very social person, gallivanting around Rhode Island to spread family news.
Cause of death was a pulmonary embolus, according to Dr. Robert Spencer. She was living at Rockland Road, North Scituate, R.I., at the time of her death. She died around 8 a.m. in the morning. She called me the night before she died (I was in graduate school at Syracuse University) and was having difficulty breathing, but she said not to worry about her. She had had phlebitis and had been under a doctor's care for losing weight. She was taking several prescription medications. My father's theory was that there was a conflict between the prescriptions that caused her unexpected death.

1 He died on 19 April 2023 at age 88 in Missoula, Montana. Died of complications of Parkinson's disease.
The collector of the information in these Leonard books was Brad Leonard, son of Charlie Leonard. He grew up thinking he had few Leonard relatives. His grandfather Leonard (Walter) told him his ancestors were "pirates and and worse," so Brad didn't start doing family history until he retired from government service at age 65. Lesson #1: Start young!
He went by the nickname "Brad."
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1956 and received an M.A. from Syracuse University in 1963. He served in the U.S. Army 1956-60. He received certificate in Russian from the Army Language School in Monterey, CA and a certificate in German from the Army's school in Germany. Biography
Walter Bradford Leonard was born on 4 February 1887 in Bristol, Rhode Island. He and
Edith Annie Regester were married on 27 February 1906 in East Providence, Rhode Island.
1 He died on 26 March 1956 at age 69 in Cranston, Providence County, Rhode Island. He was buried on 29 March 1956. Lot #5439, section 19, north side of Acorn Avenue and 83 ft. west of the junction of Acorn and Elmwood Avenues, North Burial Ground, Providence, RI
Walter Bradford Leonard was buried at North Burial Ground in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. Parents were residing in Bristol in 1888. Verification of birth from copy of birth certificate and also checking the VR's of Bristol. In the 1900 Census, the family was living at 703 North Broadway in East Providence. Parents John and Mary had been married 19 years and had 3 children: John H., Jr, 18, a stenographer, Charles D, 16, an apprentice pharmacist, and Walter B., 13, a school boy. John was a laborer in a furniture store.
Walter graduated from grammar school in 1901 in East Providence. He gave the impression his family was very poor as he was growing up. He didn't go to high school, but began working as an office boy at age 15 for American Emery. By the time he married at 19, he was a salesman. He later became a Vice President of American Emery, responsible for manufacturing. He lost his job as the company downsized in the Great Depression. He then became a salesman for American Emery and also for the Blanchard Company in Boston and later yet had a small diamond tool business. American Emery Wheel Works was located at Richmond Square, 375 Waterman St., Providence. President was W. E. Richmond.
When registering for the World War I draft on June 5, 1917, Walter B. Leonard 2nd was living at 135 Reservoir Avenue, Providence, with his wife and one child. He was born February 4, 1887, in Bristol, RI, and was working as Asst. President of American Emery Wheel Works on Waterman Street in Providence. He was of medium height and slender build, with light blue eyes and dark brown hair.
The family was living with Edith's father, Ernest, at 135 Reservoir Avenue, Providence, at the 1920 Census, along with Edith's sister Lillian (Pat). Walter is listed as a Vice President of American Emery. In the 1930 Census, family is listed as living at 135 Reservoir Avenue, Providence, District 5, with Ernest Regester, next to Arthur B. and Lillian Dodge and near the John Regester family.
The family lived at 148 Grace Street in Cranston from sometime in the 1930's until the late 1940's and summered at Quonochontaug, RI from the early 1900's to the 1930's. He and Edith were living on Grace Street when he registered for the World War II draft. At that time, he was 55 years old and working for the Blanchard Machine Co. at 64 State Street, Cambridge, MA, where he was an abrasion engineer. Walter was an avid salt water fisherman.
Marriage to Edith Anne Regester February 27, 1906, in East Providence, R.I. verified AC/VR.
According to his death certificate, he died in the State Infirmary in Cranston of hypertensive cardiovascular disease following the fracture of his right femur in an accident 15 February 1956. He apparently fell, injuring his right hip. At the time he was residing at 313 Washington Street in Providence.
The origin of the name Bradford in the family warrants some attention. My grandfather, Walter Bradford Leonard, said that the Bradford came from the family of Governor Bradford. William Bradford was Deputy Governor of RI in the late 1700's and an earlier William Bradford was governor of Plymouth Bay Colony in the 1600's. But there is no direct genealogical line to the Bradford family in the Leonard genealogy of our branch. So the story becomes a bit more complicated and hypothetical. It seems that Abigail Diman Munro, wife of Abraham Leonard, was named after her aunt, Abigail Munro (1770-1851) who married Jeremiah Diman, thereby becoming Abigail Diman. Her daughter, Margaret Diman (1809-1894), who was a second cousin and contemporary of Abigail Diman Leonard, married Allen Taylor Smith Bradford, grandson of Gov. William Bradford. Allen Taylor Smith Bradford had a relative, Walter Bradford, who died in 1837 at age ? (check) and an uncle, John, son of Gov. Bradford, who married Jemima Wardwell. They had a son Walter Bradford, born 13 August 1809, who married Sarah W. Macomber 19 June 1845, and died 25 June 1858. Abigail Diman Munro Leonard's son, John Henry Leonard (1823-1879), who was a contemporary and distant cousin of Walter Bradford, named one of his sons Walter Bradford Leonard in 1867 after one of these earlier Walter Bradfords. It would appear the middle name Bradford was adopted into our branch of the family due to admiration for some of these family relations by marriage.
Walter Bradford Leonard II did not acknowledge that Walter Bradford Leonard I was his uncle; his story was that when the two Walter Bradfords discovered they had the same name, he adopted the "II" to keep their mail from being mixed up. Order of birth: Third child born. He had person sources.
2 Graduated: A.P. Hoyt Grammar School, East Providence, RI on 26 June 1901.

Mary Eunice ("Ma Healey") Eddy
F, #12, b. 8 March 1864, d. 16 September 1942
Parents
Biography
Mary Eunice ("Ma Healey") Eddy was born on 8 March 1864 in Bristol, Rhode Island.
1 John Henry Leonard and she were married on 28 August 1881 in Bristol, Rhode Island.
2 James Thomas Healey and she were married on 31 December 1906 in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
3 She died on 16 September 1942 at age 78 at 148 Grace Street - Walter B. Leonard residence in Cranston, Providence County, Rhode Island.
4 She was buried in 1942 in Lot #979, North Burial Ground, Bristol, Rhode Island.
Mary was born March 8, 1864 (Bristol VR's) or born March 12, 1864 (RI Death Certificate). In the 1880 Census, she was living with her parents and two sisters in District 67, Bristol. She was working at the rubber works in Bristol.
Her marriage to John H. Leonard occurred August 28, 1881, in Bristol, R.I. verified in R.I. AC/VR. I have not found paperwork relating to their divorce. The family was living together at 703 North Broadway, East Providence, in the 1900 Census. By the 1910 Census, John was living with his sister at 204 Power Street, Providence.
She did definitely marry James Thomas Healey, her second husband, on 31 December 1906 in Attleboro, MA, just across the line from RI. He was a student, age 30, living in Portland, ME. He died 28 September 1907.
Mary bought Burial Lot No. 979 in North Burial Ground, Bristol, on October 7, 1907. She is listed as Mary E. Healey as of that date. I have an envelope addressed to her at 88 Ford Street, Providence, R.I. (1907?).
The 1920 Census lists Charles Leonard and his wife Ada, 24 as living with his mother, Mary E. Healey, age 55, and a boarder, Charles E. Weeks, 55. Charles E. Weeks was a prominent mason. In the 1930 Census, she is listed as living at 144 Laurens Street in Cranston, with Charles E. Weeks, 67, lodging there. The address is listed in the Cranston City Directory as 144 Laurens Street. My grandfather, Walter, used to refer to his mother's "star boarder," and that must have been Weeks. Weeks was a prominent Mason, and as a boy, I was given several of his Masonic medals. Weeks was from CT. Neither were employed in 1930 according to the 1930 Census. Weeks lived in the basement. My uncle Owen Leonard has complained about living in the unheated attic of this house about that time, when his father lost his job at American Emery and the family had to rent out their home at 148 Grace Street to others.
The Providence City Directory lists her as living at 35 Woodmont, Providence, in 1923, 205 Roger Williams in Providence in 1929, 144 Laurens in 1939, and 148 Grace Street in 1941. I remember her living at 148 Grace Street in the times I visited there between 1940 and 1942.
She lived with her son, Walter B. Leonard, in the unheated sun room at 148 Grace Street during the last years of her life (1941-2), perhaps because it was on the first floor and didn't require walking upstairs. I remember her as a sweet old lady who talked about her youth in Bristol and liked "wine berries," which we had growing in our yard in Little Compton and (as I later discovered) grow wild along the roadsides in Bristol. From what I do remember, her second marriage was not well received by the Leonard side of the family.
She died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 148 Grace Street on 16 Sep 1942 after 5 days of illness. Dr. Charles S. Southers was her attending physician. Remington Funeral Home in Cranston handled her cremation and burial. Death date was thought to be 1947, but that was due to a misreading of her death certificate. She died in 1942.
Her grave stone reads: LEONARD, 1882 John H. 1938 (her son), 1906 Arthur H. 1956 (her grandson), 1864 Mary E. Healey (no death date), 1901 Lillian R. Horsfeld 1991 (her grandson's wife)." Lillian was Arthur Leonard's wife. James Thomas Healey is not listed on the grave stone; I do not know if he is buried there.
Her obituary listed a sister, Grace Dyer Eddy Siegel, of Bristol, R.I. She was survived by her son, Walter Bradford Leonard, seven grandchildren (5 by John, 2 by Walter), and several great grandchildren.
She is listed in the Eddy Genealogy, # 6429. A Eunice C. Dyer, 1833 to December 10, 1910, is also buried in BR001 - North Burial Ground, Bristol. Eunice G. (Gifford?) Dyer who died in 1846 was Mary Eunice Eddy's grandmother.

1 He was buried at New Section, Lots #833-834, in North Burial Ground, Bristol, Rhode Island.
Charles Dyer Eddy was born 1 October 1829 in Bristol, RI, to Charles Barker Eddy and Sarah Martin Bennett. He was probably named after his mother's brother, Charles Dyer, who died shortly before he was born.
Information from 1850 Census, Bristol, RI. Microfilm 841, page 9036: He was a seaman living with his parents in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He and his family were living in Bristol in the 1870 Census. He had a personal estate valued at $5000 and was listed as a master mariner. Other information is that he was a master with the Usher fleet. A.T. and T.J. Usher engaged in an extensive export and import trade with Cuba, importing large quantities of molasses that was converted into rum by one of Bristol's two distilleries. One of the major exports was onions, with Bristol County raising from 100,000 to 150,000 bushels of onions a year. The old saying among growers of onions was: "What the smut and worms don't take, the Ushers will."
In the 1880 Census, the family was living in District 67, Bristol. Charles was a ships master and suffered from dyspepsia.
Charles is listed as living in building with Jonathan Slade and family. He's listed as a grocer in the 1876-77 Bristol Directory with store at corner of Church and High Streets, a clerk in the 1881 Directory, a foreman at the National Rubber Company in 1887, and as a junk dealer in the 1888 Bristol Directory. In the 1900 Census, he is listed as a watchman. In 1891 he was appointed Collector of Customs for the District of Bristol and Warren ("Men of Progress in Rhode Island and Providence Plantations," Boston: New England Magazine, 1896, p. 26, in which his picture appears). He lived at the corner of Church and High Streets, the house he built after retiring from the sea, above his grocery store. The 1900 Census lists him as having been born in 1828 and living with his daughter Grace and her husband Charles Henning.
Source for Eddy family tree is "The Eddy Family in America." He's mentioned on pages 525-6 of the Eddy family genealogy, 1930.
His daughter's obituary refers to him as Captain Charles D. Eddy and his wife as Sarah W. (Bennett) Eddy.
He was Collector of Customs for the Bristol and Warren District, to which he was appointed in 1891. He was a master of vessels in foreign trade for 14 years.
Rhode Island Vital Records lists his date of death as 22 August 1903. (Alternative date 24 August?) He was a widower, retired, living at Church and High Streets in Bristol. Cause of death was paralysis. His physician was W. Fred Williams, and the undertaker George W. Simmons. His parents were Cyrus and Phebe Eddy. Charles Henning was appointed administrator of his estate.
He had a large stone in the Old North Burial Ground for several generations of Eddys. The stone reads: "Charles D., 1829-1903, his wife, Sarah M. Bennett, 1842-1882, Sadie M. Eddy, 1875-1888, Charles Henning, 1858-1910, his wife, Grace Dyer Eddy, 1868-1953, his mother, Eunice D. Eddy, 1803-1846, his father, Cyrus B. Eddy, 1808-1876." The stone is roughly in the center of the cemetery NNW of the John H. Leonard plot and SE of corner of Mt. Carmel street.
A Charles D. Eddy had a daughter, Mary E., who died 6 January 1857, age 12. A different Charles D.? Charles Dyer Eddy lived in Bristol, Bristol, Massachusetts, in 1850. Resided at: Bristol, RI in 1850. In 1850 Charles Dyer Eddy was a Seaman. He lived in Bristol, Bristol, Massachusetts, in 1860.

Biography
Eunice G. Dyer was born on 31 October 1803 in Little Compton, Rhode Island.
Cyrus Barker Eddy and she were married on 7 January 1829 in Bristol, Rhode Island. She died on 8 May 1846 at age 42 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Obit. in Bristol Phenix, 9 May 1846, eulogy 16 May 1846.
1 She was buried at New Section, Lots #833-834, in North Burial Ground, Bristol, Rhode Island.
Eunice G. Dyer is unlisted in Dyer genealogy. Her death is recorded in Dr. Shepard's Deaths. Her death is also recorded in Rhode Island Deaths, 1630-1930, as May 8, 1846, age 43. Kin 1 is listed as Cyrus B. Eddy; Kin 2 is listed as Rebecca Easterbrooks (sister?). She's not in the Tiverton or Little Compton records in the Arnold Collection of Vital Statistics of Rhode Island. Her birthdate, marriage, and death date are in the Eddy Family Genealogy. She's also not in Westport VR's. "Little Compton Families" (p. 255) lists children by Preserved and his second wife as Preserved, b. 17 September 1798, James, b. abt. 1803, d. 1 June 1876 in Westport, Charles, a daughter, and a second daughter.
It would appear that she was close to her brother, Charles Dyer, who died in 1830 about the time her first son was born and named Charles Dyer Eddy. My autosomal dna analysis indicates a relationship to the Giffords and Dyers.
One source lists her birthday as July 17, 1808.
A Eunice Dyer was born in Little Compton March 8, 1743, d. bef. 1778. She was the daughter of Charles Dyer, father of Preserved Dyer. Preserved also had a brother, Charles, who lived in Hopkinton and who had a wife named Rebecca, a son Jonathan, and daughters named Rhoda, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Eunice. Eunice was the youngest, under 18 at the time Charles' will was proven, and she married Nathan Matteson of East Greenwich August 7, 1790.
Rebecca Easterbrooks is also listed as kin 2 for Julia Ann, Abel (d. 1849), Thomas T. (d. 1851). Rebecca Easterbrooks was born about 1817, married to William Easterbrooks, and lived next door to Albert C. Bennett in 1850.
Theory: Preserved Dyer b. February 10, 1737/38 in Little Compton, d. Westport MA March 27, 1828, m. (1) Susannah B. Head, m. (2) Deborah Gifford December 7, 1793. Preserved had five children by his second wife: Preserved, b. September 17, 1798, James b. abt. 1803, d. 1876, Charles, and two daughters, names not listed. My theory is that one of those daughters was Eunice and the other may have been named Rebecca. Eunice's middle name was probably Gifford.
Eunice G. Dyer is listed as member of Congregational Church, Bristol, from July 1835 until her death. A note says Church may have further information. She is listed here as Eunice D. rather than Eunice G., but the D may be for Dyer.
Her parents are listed in the Reunion of the Eddy Family and 250th Anniversary to Samuel Eddy's Landing in Plymouth, 1885.
Preserved's father, Charles, Jr., m. January 21, 1716/17 Elizabeth Shreive (Sheriff) in Middletown. He had a dau. Eunice and a son John.
Charles, Jr.'s father was Charles Dyer, b. March 22, 1697, in LC, d. January 5, 1775, in LC m. January 1, 1758, in Middletown, Rebecca Weaver. Children: Eunice, Preserved, Benjamin (b. There were several Dyers listed in the Little Compton or Westport Censuses of 1810 and 1820: Joseph, Samuel, Preserved, Head, Zaccheus, Bersheba (Bathsheba?), John, and Canaan. Joseph had a daughter born 8 March 1803 (Christiana), and Head had a daughter Martha P. born in 1803.

Harborne is near Birmingham, and Laburnum Place is still there.
It is probable he that met his wife, Sarah, while serving his apprenticeship in Birmingham. The Empsons lived in Birmingham. He and Sarah married in Providence, RI, in December 1885. He is listed as working for Gorham Manufacturing in Providence in May 1882, having followed his father there in 1881. He may have sent for Sarah after saving some money to finance the move..
A rock fell on one leg when he was about 10 years old. He wore a heavy steel brace with a built-up shoe on the deformed leg for the rest of his life. He used to walk from his Reservoir Avenue address to Gorham Manufacturing Company daily, arriving at work at 6 a.m. and leaving at 6 p.m. (noon on Saturdays). Some of his pictures show him with two canes.
He and Sarah Empson's step brother, Lawrence W. Pennington, were apparently close. Pennington, who was very successful in the jewelry design and trade, had traveled to Providence, RI, in the 1870's and probably encouraged Ernest and his family to emigrate. He may have paid for his stepsister Sarah to come over 9 October 1882. Lawrence may have taught Ernest to paint and could have been supportive in his finding an apprenticeship. They both raised bulldogs. Ernest named his only son Lawrence.
According to Gorham records, he began working as a silver chaser May 8, 1882, for $12 a week. In 1883 he was living with his parents and made $12 a week. He was raised to $14 in 1884 and $16 in 1885. By 1900 he was at desk #9 and drew $22 a week, implying that he was rather good at his craft. The silver chasers' room was known as the House of Lords. He was earning $64 a week when he retired, a good salary in those days. Gorham's employment records are archived at the John Hay Library at Brown University.
The U.S. District Court in Providence lists his arrival in the U.S. and 1 May 1882, New York, and his date of naturalization as 3 Feb 1902.
His hobby was painting, and six or more of his oil paintings are still in the family.
He apparently lived in East Providence for a time -- at least one daughter was born there. He is listed in the 1886 and 1893 Providence City Directory as living at 20 Summit Avenue. In the 1890 Providence Directory, he is listed as a silversmith with a house at 477 Potter's Ave. By 1900 he owned his home at 135 Reservoir Avenue, living there until he died in 1929, and had a German-born housekeeper named Pauline (who married his brother). His daughters Lillian and Edith and his son Lawrence were living with him. He rented rooms to Charles Thomae from Germany, also a Gorham silver chaser, Charles' wife Margaret, and their two daughters, Florence and Marrin. The 1910 and 1920 Censuses has him still living at 135 Reservoir Avenue. Arthur and Lillian Regester Dodge were also living there, as were Walter and Edith Regester Leonard and their son Charles.
He is buried in North Burial Ground, Providence, RI, no. 5439 in section 29, situated on the north side of Acorn Avenue and 83 feet west of the junction of Acorn and Glenwood Avenues 22 December 1930.. The Regester tombstone faces Acorn Avenue. Lot cost $112 in 1931 and is owned by the Est. of Ernest W. Regester. Five of the six spots for burial are occupied (Ernest, Sarah, Arthur Dodge, Patty Regester Dodge, Walter Leonard, Edith Leonard ; one is unoccupied and available for two people, four if cremated.
According to a newspaper article, he was stricken sick while watching a group of boys attempting to enter their locked home late in the day and died before medical aid could be summoned. He was living with a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Dodge, of 135 Reservoir Avenue, Elmwood. He came to the United States in 1882 (about 50 years before he died). He worked as a silversmith for Gorham Manufacturing Company until 1926. At the time of his death, he had three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Dodge, Mrs. Walter B. Leonard, and Mrs. Morse Preeman of Glendale, California, and one son, Lawrence R. Regester of Swampscott, Massachusetts. Funeral was at Remington Funeral Home on Broad Street, Providence, and burial at the North End Burial Ground in Providence. Cemetery records say he was buried 16 Apr 1931, as was his wife, Sarah, who was moved from Locust Grove Cemetery in Providence to the North Burial Ground on the same date. The lot is in Section 29.
There was an exhibit of a collection of Gorham Martele silver put together by the Sheltons of Lafayette, LA, in the fall of 2001. That led Samuel Hough, who was to give a lecture on the silver collection, to identify the 40 or so silver chasers (nicknamed "The House of Lords") working for Gorham around 1900. A number of Regesters were. Ernest was probably the most skilled of them, and the collection exhibited included 4 or 5 pieces by him. The exhibit is apparently in a permanent collection in Las Vegas, Nevada. Resided: 135 Reservoir Avenue, Providence, R.I.

Biography
Sarah Lillian Empson was born on 16 December 1863 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
1 Ernest William Regester and she were married on 29 December 1885 in Providence, Rhode Island.
2 She died on 19 November 1898 at age 34 in Providence, Rhode Island. She was buried at PV004 - Locust Grove Cemetery, Elmwood Ave., in Providence., Rhode Island.
Her mother was known as Lillian.
Her step brother was an English artist and jewelry designer, Lawrence Willmore Pennington (Lon Penn). I have one of his paintings with note in what appears to be Edith Regester's hand -- "painted by my mother's brother." Sarah's mother was married to an Arthur Pennington who died while they were crossing the Atlantic to Boston in 1854. Arthur W. Pennington, a second child, was born during the voyage. Sarah's mother returned to Birmingham from Boston in 1856 with the two boys, Lawrence and Arthur.. She married Thomas Cook, who also passed away, and then married Sarah's father, William Empson.
Exactly how Sarah Empson met Ernest Regester is a mystery. The Empson family was living on Icknield St., Birmingham, across Warstone Lane Cemetery from the Jewelry Quarter where it is likely that Ernest Regester served his apprenticeship. Lawrence Pennington, Sarah's step brother, was acquainted with the Regester family.
Sarah was born at 55 Howard Street, St. George, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Her mother could not sign her name, but signed the registration as informant with a mark. She and her sister Emma were christened December 30, 1867, at St. Martin's, Birmingham.
She arrived in New York on October 9, 1882, from Liverpool, England, on the City of Chester. (Picture of ship on file). This was about a year after her future husband, Ernest Regester.
Another Lillie Empson, age 20, arrived on the Samaria on 1 January 1884. Sarah Lillian Empson was christened on 30 December 1867 at Saint Martin in Birmingham, Warwick, England.

Biography
Charles William Regester was born on 25 November 1840 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. This is the date of birth listed on his tombstone in lot 233, Willow Avenue, Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI. He and
Harriet Mildred Oldale were married about 1860 in Sheffield, England.
1 He died on 15 June 1921 at age 80 in Lakewood, Rhode Island. He was buried on 15 July 1922 at Lot 233, Willow Avenue, Locust Grove Cemetery, in Elmwood Avenue, Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.
Charles William Regester immigrated August 1881, arriving 9 September 1881 to New York City, New York. He was buried at Lot 233, Willow Avenue, in Locust Grove Cemetery, Elmwood Ave., Providence. In the 1861 Census, Charles William, 20, a silver chaser, his wife, Harriet, 18, and their 3 month old son Ernest William were living at 22 (? -- illegible) Ct. 1, Ebenezer Street, St. Philips, Sheffield, Yorkshire. They were living with his father and mother: William Regester, 43, a steel burnisher, his wife Charlotte, 42, son Edward, 12, and son Walter, 7.
The family moved from Sheffield before 1871 to Birmingham and apparently, from the birth places of the children, moved back and forth among Birmingham, Ecclesall Brielow (next to Sheffield), and Kings Norton (not sure where this is), according to records researched by John Register. At the time of the 1871 Census, they were living at 214 Great Colinole St. in St. Thomas (District 8), Birmingham. They were apparently living at Laburnum Place, Bull Street, Harborne (near Birmingham) in 1873. A city directory lists Charles as living there in 1876 and working as a silver chaser.
The 1881 Census of England and Wales lists family as living at 183 Alexandra Road, Heeley, Yorkshire, England. All of the family down to Joseph had a birthplace of Heeley, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, while the younger children had no birthplace listed. Sheffield, England, is in Yorkshire -- West Riding (WRY).
Charles left for America toward the end of August 1881, arriving in New York September 9th, 1881. At that point he had 10 children. His wife and children followed him to America on the Arizona, arriving in New York City on 2 May 1882 (the listing of them on castlegarden.org has their ages off by 2 years in almost all cases).
He began work at Gorham on September 14, 1881, having arrived in New York September 9th from England. He was probably the William Regester, clerk, age 41, who arrived on that date on the City of Brussels He initially boarded at 22 Howell Street, Providence.
He was naturalized at the Court of Common Pleas, Providence, on 27 Jun 1888, probably just before a trip back to England.
Apparently, Charles made several trips back to England after settling in America. A Charles W. Regester arrived in the United States on August 27, 1888, from Liverpool and Queenstown, England, on the Etruria. He was 49 at the time and born in Yorkshire. He is also shown as arriving in Boston in August 1904 on the ship Cretic, noting that he took out citizenship papers here in 1888.
In 1900 he worked at desk #41 at Gorham and was paid $17 per week. On March 9, 1901, he was transferred from the chasing room to the less demanding room of production chasers. He went on the pension roll from Gorham at $25, later raised to $30 per month.
He later resided at 25 (15?) Pleasant Street, Cranston, where he had a small greenhouse. He grew flowers as a hobby and took second prize in a 1896 Providence flower show.
Charles retired in 1906 at age 68 from Gorham Manufacturing Company, where he was assistant foreman in the chasing department. After his retirement it was his custom to spend the winter in Los Angeles with two of his daughters, Mrs. Clara A. Smith and Mrs. Jeffrey R. Munroe. His summers he spent with a daughter, Mrs. William F. Bischoff, Jefferson Street, Lakewood. He suffered two strokes on the train from Los Angeles and died at his daughter's home in Lakewood.
At the time of his death, he had three surviving daughters, five sons, 30 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. The sons were Ernest W., Joseph H., Douglas (all of Providence), Arthur J. of Shawomet, and Horace V. of Niagara Falls. Another son, Charles, had died the previous October in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
He died on July 15, 1922, according to Gorham records. His tombstone in Lot 233, Willow Avenue, Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI, lists 14 July 1922 as his date of death. He purchased the northern half of lot 233 in Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, in 1899, probably for the burial of his daughter-in-law, Sarah, who died that year, or his wife who also died that year. The funeral was held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pawtuxet, Rhode Island, with burial in Locust Grove Cemetery in Providence. Locust Grove Cemetery went bankrupt and is now owned by the City of Providence.
Regesters buried in Locust Grove Cemetery on Elmwood Avenue include Charles W (1922), Eva (1899), Harriet E. (1899), Laura E. (1909), and Sarah L. (1898). Sarah was later moved to the North Burial Ground in Providence to be next to her husband, Ernest William Regester.
Loose end: A Florence M. Regester married Tom Hilton May 22, 1907, in Providence. Where does she fit in the Regester family? Charles William Regester was a Silver Chaser, Gorham Mfg. Co. Immigrated: from England in 1880. He was naturalized on 27 June 1888 in Court of Common Pleas, Providence, Rhode Island. He died on 14 July 1922 at age 81 in Lakewood, Los Angeles, California.
