Biography
Arthur Robert ("Daddy Art") Kells was born on 28 February 1888 in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He and
Amy Alfrida ("Nana Amy") Johnson were married on 19 September 1910 in Providence, Rhode Island.
1 He died on 4 May 1947 at age 59 in Cranston, Providence County, Rhode Island. He was buried on 7 May 1947 at Indian Ridge, Lot 31, Book C, Page 539, Pittsfield Cemetary, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Arthur was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. His family moved to Rhode Island sometime between 1900 and 1904. He lived in Providence before moving to Cranston. In 1910 he was boarding at 102 Prairie Avenue in Providence His obituary said that he moved to Rhode Island as a child. He was educated in Providence schools. His father was living with him when his father died in 1904.
He and Amy were married by Edward L. Ninde, Pastor of Mathewson Street Methodist Episcopal Church, 154 Narragansett Avenue, Providence. He and Amy initially lived at 155 Wellington Avenue in Auburn in 1911. His brothers, Harold and Paul, lived in Toledo, Ohio. He had a favorite cousin, William, according to my mother, and a close friend, Millard..
When Dolores was born, they were living at 136 Garden Street, Auburn, R.I. They next moved to 768 Park Avenue in Auburn, where they were living in 1913. They celebrated her third birthday at 481 Pontiac Avenue, also in or near the Auburn part of Cranston, R.I.
At the time of the World War I draft registration, he was living at 481 Pontiac Avenue, working as a printer with the Standard Printing Co., 54 Pine Street, Providence, and was of medium height, stout build, blue eyes, black hair. At some point between then and 1923, he went to work as a compositor for the Providence Journal and was still there in 1932.
In the 1920 Census, the family was living together in Cranston along with Amy's mother, Maria. He bought a home at 71 Hawthorne Avenue in the Eden Park section of Cranston. Hawthorne Avenue was called Chestnut avenue until 1928.
In the 1930 Census, the family is listed at 71 Hawthorne Avenue, Cranston. Arthur was a compositor with the Journal newspaper. Dolores was a typist.
In the 1940 Census, he and Amy were living at 71 Hawthorne Avenue. He was working as a school bus driver for Cranston and had worked 15 hours the week of the census. They had two boarders living with them: Doris Blanchard and Edith Handford, both office workers in Providence. Arthur had completed 10 years of schooling and Amy 8 years. They did not own a car. Arthur took a bus to the school bus garage in Knightsville or walked.
He was a printer/proofreader by profession and worked for one of the Providence papers until the paper folded during the Great Depression (1932?). He was a union member from his earliest working days.
He played the cornet. His father also played the cornet and was a bandmaster. He told me he used to play on the excursion boats that sailed between Providence and Sakonnet Point.
He was a member of Phillips Memorial Baptist Church in Cranston. During World War II, he worked as a janitor for the Phillips Memorial Church and also as a school bus driver for the Cranston School Department. Amy used to deliver telegrams during World War II (they had a phone, and many people then didn't). When he registered for the World War II draft in 1942, he was 54 years old, lived at 71 Hawthorne Avenue, Cranston, and was working for the Cranston School Department as a bus driver.
He was a compositor with the Providence Journal at the time of death in 1947. His father was in the same profession.
I (Brad Leonard) used to call him "Daddy Art." I like him very much. He used to tell me stories and go for walks with me. A favorite walk was around Blackamore Pond in Cranston. He was very handy with tools and taught me a lot about woodworking. He had a pet dog, a dwarf collie named Chubby, who enjoyed the walks too.
Daddy Art insisted adamantly that he was of northern Irish descent, an Orangeman, and always wore orange on northern Irish independence day. When I started family research, I looked hard for his line of descent from northern Ireland. But I always found that his line led back to Palatine Germans. The papers he left included correspondence with a Robert Arthur Kells in New York City who was of northern Irish descent, which is where he may have picked up the idea of Irish descent. So I recommend that anyone researching this line check out Irish as well as Palatine possibilities.
He died of a coronary thrombosis, according to his death certificate. He went upstairs to take a nap and never woke up. He had been bothered by phlebitis prior to his death. Employed: Providence Tribute, proofreader. Resided: 71 Hawthorne Ave., Cranston, R.I. between 1920 and 1947. Employed: Philips Memorial Baptist Church, janitor between 1938 and 1945. Employed: Cranston School Dept., bus driver between 1940 and 1947. Employed: Providence Journal/Bulletin, proofreader in 1947.

Her family emigrated to America, 15 March 1891 when Amy was two and one half. As was the tradition, US Immigration officials americanized their Swedish names into familiar common names in America (example: Johansson to Johnson).

That would seem to indicate that John Johnson was still alive in September 1910, but he is not mentioned among the guests in the guest book.
They went on a honeymoon to Pittsfield, Massachusetts (which is where the Kells family was from and where Arthur grew up) and were "at home" after September 27th.

Brad's note: These guests books include many relatives, as well as neighbors and friends. The Nilsons/Nelsons were cousins; and the Sjobergs were second cousins. The Burgesons were probably relatives, although I haven't discovered the connection. I don't know if the Lundgrens were relatives. The spelling is not consistent in my grandmother's hand (sen's vs. son's), and I don't know whether the families kept it consistent or not.
After Arthur Kells died, Amy worked as a housekeeper for a Mr. Anderson who lived at 15 Fordson in Eden Park, RI. Those years of working entitled her to Social Security. When he died, she moved to her own apartment. When she died, she was living at 27 Myrtle Ave., Cranston, R.I.
Social Security Number 038-22-6392A, She started drawing Social Security benefits in 1954 ($40.80 a month).

Herbert Clinton Kells
M, #28, b. 2 February 1862, d. 28 December 1904
Parents
Biography
Herbert Clinton Kells was born on 2 February 1862 in Hudson, Columbia County, New York.
1 He and
Lena Monnier Howland were married on 3 June 1884 in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
2 He and
Lucretia E. Mickel were married on 11 March 1891 in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
3 He and
Fannie Lodema Smith were married on 22 June 1898 in Albany, New York or Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
4 He died on 28 December 1904 at age 42 at 49 Marshall Street in Providence, Rhode Island.
5 He was buried on 31 December 1904 at Kells Plot 31, Indian Ridge, in PIttsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
Birthdate is February 4th, figured from age at date of death. The best explanation I can come up with as to the origin of his names, Herbert and Clinton, is that they come from the Howland family. Herbert and Clinton were the names of the sons of William F. Howland, brother of George Lawrence Howland, who was father of Lena Monnier Howland, who later married Herbert Clinton Kells. This implies that the Kells family knew the George Howland family a generation before their children married. According to my mother, later verified by the Mayflower Society, the Howlands were descendants of Mayflower passenger John Howland.
Herbert was married three times, first to Lena Howland who committed suicide shortly after son Arthur was born, second to Lucretia Mickel, and third to Fanny Lodema Smith who lived until the 1960's. Herbert had by his three wives seven children, of which 3 died as young children and 4 survived to adulthood. Two of the four lived well into their 90's, while the other two died relatively young. Herbert's 3rd wife married 3 times, and the relationships become hard to figure. Arthur treated and regarded Fanny Lodema Smith as his mother. When Lucretia died, Fanny Lodema stepped up to care for the young Arthur.
Herbert Clinton Kells, 22, born in Hudson, NY, a printer, is listed in the 1890 Voter Registration for Pittsfield living at 6 First St. on May 1 and at 2 Robbins Ave. on voter registration day. There is also a William S. Kells (his brother), 21, born in Hudson, NY, a clerk, listed as living at 13 Francis St. on May 1, and at 9 Bank Row on registration day. He was living at 21 Park Street when he married Lodema Smith.
He moved to Pittsfield in 1875 when he was 13, apparently with his father, brother, and sister.
The 1880 Census lists Herbert Kells, 18, a printer, living alone in Pittsfield, born in New York, as were both parents, as of 30 June 1880 (National Archives Film T9-0521. page 357A). Herbert C. Kells, 18, a compositor in a newspaper office, is also listed as a boarder at 143 Union Street, Springfield, MA, on 5 June 1880 (page no. 17 or 159). In the 1883 and 1884 Pittsfield directories, he's listed as living at 13 Francis St. with his father, Robert, and brother, William. One year he's listed as a shoemaker and the other as a printer. In October 1888, Herbert C., 22, born in Hudson, NY, was living at 6 First Street with his father Robert. He is listed as a book and job lot printer at 15 1/2 North, residing at 2 South Robbins, in the 1887 City Directory for Pittsfield, rooming at 8 West in 1888 and 1889. In 1901, he is a printer with business located at 57 North, home at 21 Park, and leader of the Pittsfield City Band. In 1903 he is listed as removed to Providence, RI. The City Tax Roles in 1897 has him paying taxes of $28.20 for real estate at 21 Park and $8.90 for personal property. He owned the same property in 1899 and 1900, but was also administrator of Lucretia E. Kells' estate comprised of vacant lots at 20 and 43 Lake View Terrace and a lot at 21 Lake View Terrace he or they jointly owned. In the 1900 Census, the family was living at 21 Park Street, Pittsfield. Cornelia Smith, mother-in-law to Herbert, but mother of Fanny Lodema Smith, (her mother was named Cornelia Elizabeth Smith, born in May 1845), born Sept. 1844, was living with them. Herbert was a printer at that time. The 1901 Pittsfield City Directory lists him as a printer at 57 North and leader, Pittsfield City Band, residing at 21 Park.
Herbert started his musical career on the violin. He joined Mallory's Band, playing the Tenor and later the Baritone until the organization disbanded. Then he joined St. Joseph's band, starting on 2nd Cornet and ending on solo cornet. He played solo cornet in the Germania Band and was its leader until going to Boston to study under E.M. Bagley, solo cornetist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He then returned to Pittsfield to lead the American Band of Pittsfield for a year, then returned to Boston for another year of study. He was leader of the Pittsfield City Band, the Lenox Band, and the Stockbridge Band. He played Cornet in the Stockbridge Silver Cornet Band and tenor and baritone in Malory's band. Berkshire HIlls magazine mentions him in an article in 1901 (March 1, 1901) and in 1902, pp. 86-87, including a picture.
Herbert Kells mentioned in Berkshire Genealogist Quarterly, Vol. 11, #4, p. 108. (1890 Voter Registration).
Printers and Printing in Providence, 1762-1907, Providence Typographical Union #33, 1907: "Herbert Clinton Kells - Died Providence, December 28, 1904, 42 years, 10 months, 24 days; he was born in Hudson, NY, but removed to Pittsfield, MA, in 1875 where he began to study music and learning printing; he played in all the bands of note in and about Pittsfield; he removed to this city in 1902 and was admitted his card to Providence Union September 28, 1902; subsequently withdrew and became a member of the Pressman's Union. He was also a member of the Musicians Union and of the Royal Atheneanum. He was buried in Pittsfield."
He died of pneumonia, according to his death certificate. The Berkshire
Eagle gives typhoid as cause of death. H. Clinton Crocker, MD, of 194 Smith Street (Providence) signed the certificate. Undertaker was H. B. Knowles & Sons, 99 North Main St. (Providence).
His 3rd wife, Lodema, died before his daughter-in-law, Amy, and Amy was
buried initially in the spot next to Herbert that Lodema reserved for herself. Charlie Leonard had to pay for switching the graves to Lodema's satisfaction.

He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1864 and 1883 and presumably the years in-between.
He is listed in the 1900 Census as a patient in the Northampton Insane Hospital, widowed. It is likely he died there. Mental illness may have been caused by lead poisoning from lead-based paint he used in painting houses.
My mother told me Arthur Kells' favorite cousin was William Howland. Son of George Howland? No record. Could it have been a William Kells?

Josephine E. Howland was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Pittsfield in 1864.
Was she born in Greenwich or Greenbush, NY, or Greenfield, MA? I found a Jenny born at about the right time in Greenfield, MA. It is supposition that she is Josephine's sister -- remains to be proven. Looks doubtful.

"Mrs. Robert Kells has bought the S.V.R. Daniels Place on Jubilee Hill for $15,000 and will occupy it as a first class boarding house..." 27 Sep 1883. 13 Francis St.
Robert Kells, 46, was registered as a voter in Pittsfield in 1890. He was listed as being born in Schodack, NY. His residence May 1 was 6 First St., PIttsfield. His residence on day of registration at 13 Perkins St. He is listed as a merchant at 4 West St. He was in business with E.M. Miller -- fish market and fruit dealers.
Robert Kells was SNG, member of Osceola Lodge, No. 125 IOOF (on September 3, 1884).
In the 1886 City Directory for Pittsfield, Robert is listed as living at 13 Francis; in 1887 boarding at 12 South; in 1888 rooming at 4 West, by 1901 living at the US Hotel with son William S. In 1900 Census, Robert Kells, boarder, born November (not September) 1836, age 63, born in New York, father and mother born in New York, working in fish market. She's not listed with him in 1900 Census nor separately listed. This would have been while their marriage was on hard times (see story under Esther Wright Lisk). Also boarding at the same place was William S. Kells, his son, born August 1863, a salesman, listed as married, but no wife listed.
He may have sold or lost his partnership with E.M. Miller at 13 West Street in March 1892. The business is listed as E.M. Miller, Wholesale and Retail Dealer in Oysters, Fish, Fruit, etc. The 1900 Census lists him as a fishmonger.
In 1903, he's listed as living at the US Hotel and having a fish and vegetable market at 106 West. His son, William S., is a clerk at 106 West. In 1904 Robert is listed as removing to Providence; his son William as removing to Ohio.
He was admitted to the Odd Fellows home in Worcestor, MA, 15 Feb 1907. A query to the Odd Fellows brought a response that they had no further information about him.
His obituary in the Pittsfield Evening Sun of November 17, 1909, reads as follows: "Robert Kells, aged 72 years, died in the Odd Fellows home at Worcester Thursday night and the funeral will be held from the Mortuary chapel Sunday afternoon at 8 o'clock. Interment will be in the Pittsfield cemetery." That would have him born in 1837 vice 1834. His tombstone has him born in 1836. A query to the Odd Fellows Home in Worcester, where he was residing when he died, resulted in a response that they had no further information about him.
"Born in Hudson, NY, Mr. Kells came to Pittsfield in 1875 and operated a wholesale and retail fish and vegetable market on the corner where the Wendell Hotel now stands. While in business here he resided in Prospect Villa which he purchased from S.R.V. Daniels and he lived there many years.
The deceased was a charter member of Osceola Lodge, IOOF, and also a charter member of the Mohegan Lodge, IORM... He removed to the IOOF home about three years ago... (Would there be any pictures of him as part of a membership group shot in Pittsfield newspapers or magazines?)
He is survived by one son, William S., and a daughter, Miss Maud Kells, both of Detroit, Michigan." His son, Herbert, had predeceased him in 1904.
He was 71 years, 11 months, 24 days old when he died, according to Pittsfield records. He died of arteriosclerosis.
Note: assuming the accuracy of Pittsfield records, that would have had Robert born in 1837. The 1870 Census had him 34, born in 1835, as does the 1880 Census. The 1900 Census had him 63, born in 1836. There's a problem here. There's conflicting information as to whether he was born in Hudson or Schodack, NY. I haven't found any information that had him living in Schodack except the 1890 voter registration and a newspaper clipping, paper unknown, from my grandfather's effects, reporting his death. He had cousins living in Schodack.

Esther Wright Lisk
F, #33, b. May 1842, d. before 15 February 1905
Parents
Family: Robert Kells (b. 23 October 1834, d. 29 October 1909)
Biography
Esther Wright Lisk was born in May 1842 in Hudson, Columbia County, New York.
1 Robert Kells and she were married on 24 December 1860 in Hudson, Columbia County, New York. She died before 15 February 1905 in East Saint Louis, Illinois. She was buried at Forest Cemetery in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. A number of her family were buried in Forest Cemetery, Toledo including her son William. Funeral services by Mathies Undertakers.
She is not in the Kells Plot at Indian Ridge in the Pittsfield Cemetery. She died while visiting friends in East Saint Louis, Illinois
Esther was a member of the Methodist Episcopalian Church in 1883 in Pittsfield. George L. Howland (Herbert Kells' future father-in-law) and his daughter, Josephine, were also members of the Church in 1883. Josephine and Herbert married 3 June 1884. George was a direct descendant of John Howland and his parents who came over on the Mayflower.
Per Pittsfield regulations, women needed their husband's permission to engage in business. Esther had to apply for a certificate to engage in business, and she was awarded a Married Women's Certificate, Pittsfield, MA, dtd. March 24, 1885, p. 112. "My husband -- Mr. Robert Kells. I propose business...that of keeping a boarding house and of buying and selling all kinds of personal property at #13, Francis Avenue, known as Prospect Villa..." Esther and Robert celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary there with a large party in January 1886.
She and her husband managed Prospect Villa until September 1886 when Prospect Villa defaulted on its mortgage. Esther apparently went to live with relatives in Hudson. The matter was before the insolvency court in 1886 until 1888 when it was purchased by C. W. Wright in November 1888 for $12,000..
Esther is listed as the mother of the groom in the MA marriage record of her son, William, in 1898. Robert and son William were listed as boarders in the 1900 Census
On May 11, 1903, Esther petitioned the probate court for separate support from her husband, Robert Kells, alleging that Robert has "repeatedly assaulted and battered her. He had turned her out of doors without just cause. He has threatened her with personal violence often." Robert is listed as a dealer in fish at 106 West Street, Pittsfield, at that time and sold his business July 9, 1903.. Quote is from Berkshire County Probate File Papers, 1761-1917, database with images, NEHGS, per Jennifer Stone Randolph, Touchstone Genealogical Services.
Her death was announced 20 Feb 1905: Information has been received here of the death in St. Mary's hospital of St. Louis, MO, of Mrs. E. W. Kells, formerly of this city. Mrs. Kells, who had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. C. E. Meilink in Toledo, O., went to St. Louis about two months ago to visit some friends. She was taken ill three weeks ago and had been in the hospital since that time. The death which was unexpected, was due to heart trouble and occurred last week. St. Louis friends were in constant care of her and every comfort had been provided by her children. The body was brought to Toledo and was interred in Toledo. That was probably in Forest Cemetery.
Undated newspaper clipping of Robert's death in 1909 calls her Lish, but have been unable to find any Lish's in Hudson.
Notes toward her origin:
There were a Solomon Lisk, b. 1817, and Lodema Lisk living in Hudson with children: William, d. August 12, 1841; Margaret Ann, d. November 24, 1849 (born November 14, 1848), stillborn dau. d. April 19, 1851, ). Lodema died May 7, 1852, 30 years old. Caroline D, dau. of Solomon and Angenette, d. September 1, 1858 (b. April 17, 1857). Angenette b. 1827. Angenette (sometimes spelled Ann Jeanette) was Solomon's second wife.
In 1850 Census, Samuel Lisk, 31, b. 1819, born in NY, painter, Lodema Lisk, 30, b. 1820, born in NY, two daughters: Esther, b. 1842 in NY, and Cornelius (?), b. 1844 in NY. Joseph Lisk died February 16, 1828, age 31. This Esther appears to be our Esther Lisk.
In the 1860 Census, Solomon Lisk, 43, wife Angenette, 32, daughters Esther, 17, (born 1843), dress maker, Elizabeth, 15, (born 1845), Mary L, 6, Edward H., 4, and Annie L., under 1, along with Francis Bathrick, 19, tailoress, and Esther Wright, 37. Esther Wright had a personal estate of $1200. The 1850 Census had an Esther Wright, 27, (b. abt. 1823), Joseph Wright, 30?, painter, b. VT, and a Mary Wright, 1, b. NY, in Milton, Saratoga Co, NY.
It's not clear why Esther Wright would have come to live with the Lisks, nor why Solomon and Lodema would have named a daughter Esther Wright Lisk. Lodema's mother's maiden name is not known and could have been Wright, but otherwise, it is difficult to imagine a relationship. Another possibility: Esther Wright, b. abt. 1823, could have been a Wait, sister to Lodema, b. 1820.
The 1850 Census had an Esther Wright, 67, born 1783, living with B. O. Wait, a cartman, 47, and wife Margaret, 46, in Catskill, Greene Co., NY. That Esther Wright could have been the mother of Margaret Wright. B. O. Wait could have been the father of Lodema, but there is no record showing that.
Esther and Skinner Wright had a dau., Sarah, baptized at Linlithgo reformed church 4 Feb. 1793. Perhaps this family yielded a daughter or grandaughter, Esther Wright, born abt. 1823.
In the 1870 Census, Solomon, 52, Angenette, 43, Mary, 16, apprentice to tailor, Edward, 14, Anna L, 10, and Ida F, 8. James Crawford, a house painter from Ireland, was living with them, possibly an apprentice to Solomon.
1880 Census lists Solomon Lisk, 63, born in NY, wife Angenett Lisk, 53, born in NY, and three children, Edward H., 24, born in NY, bookkeeper, Anna L., 19, born in NY, dress maker, and Ida F., 18, born in New York (4th Ward, Hudson, Columbia, NY). National Archives Film T9-0821, page 337B.
Edward, 1858 (Edward listed in 1900 Census for Hudson, NY, b Nov 1856, wife Bertha E born Sept 1872, married 1897, mother Anna b. Dec 1825 living with them.
There were Wrights living in Hudson, Claverack, and environs: Andrew, Charles, Daniel, Davis, George, H.D., John, Langdon, Sereno, Walter, and William, according to the Hudson paper. No record of an Esther marrying. Thomas m. Caterine Patterson, 1803, Claverack Reformed Church; Davis m. Elizabeth Petri, 1836, Linlithgo Reformed Church.
Name is misspelled as Sisk in one record.

Johannes Johansson
M, #34, b. 9 April 1837, d. 19 April 1911
Parents
Biography
Johannes Johansson was born on 9 April 1837 in Gammaltorp, Hällstad, Älvsborg län, Sweden.
1 He and
Maria Charlotta Danielsdotter Nilsson were married on 24 March 1871 in Hössna, Älvsborg län (Väster Götaland), Sweden.
2 He died on 19 April 1911 at age 74 at State Institution, Howard, in Cranston, Rhode Island. He was buried in Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, Rhode Island.
Johannes' father died when he was 9 years old. His mother had to sell their 1/4 ownership and move from their farm, Gammalstorp, in 1850. They moved to Blidsberg parish, east of Hällstad, Väster Götaland, Sweden. The Gammalstorp property had been in the family for several generations, and a part of it continued to be in the family through Johannes' uncles and a cousin. According to his son, Edvin, Johannes' ancestors had been farmers for generations.
On October 24, 1871, the newly married Johan Johansson moved with his wife to Krokstorp, where he was a quarter (1/4) owner (per Hössna Husförhörslängd AI:11, p. 30). Son Edwin's notes say that Johan was a farmer and also hauled lumber for a saw mill to a railroad station for extra income. He and his wife raised their family at Krokstorp until leaving to emigrate to America. Another 1/4 was owned by Anders Johansson and half owned by Johan Andersson. The Anderssons went to America from Krokstorp in 1882.
The Ulricehamn Tidning for 20 February 1891 carried the announcement of the auction of the Johansson's possessions at Krokstorp: "Fungörelse: Genom offentlig auktion, som på stället forrättas Tingaden den 10 näste Mars k. Anna- Lena Hultman's great grandparents, the Petterssons from Småland, were the successful bidders on the farm.
The Index of Hössna Emigrants 1890-99 lists Johan Johansson, his wife Maria Charlotta Danielsdotter, and children Elin Matilda, Emma Alfrida, Karl Victor, Maria Wilhelmina, Klas Albert, and Hanna Elvira, emigrating from Krokstorp (farm or croft), Hössna, on March 15, 1891. Johanna Maria Johansdotter (Johan's sister) is listed as leaving the next day (March 16, 1891). A nephew of Maria Charlotta's, Johan Albin Davidson, apparently went with them.
The first Swede to settle in the Apponoag and Pontiac part of Warwick (and the neighboring parts of Cranston called Eden Park and Auburn, as well as close-by Providence) was Andrew P. Magnuson 1814-1896, a farmer from Timmele, Alvsborg lan, who arrived in Boston in 1852 with his wife, Brita Maria, daughter, and two young people. There were jobs in the local mills owned by B. B. and R. Knight and mill housing nearby, farm work on the Budlong farm in Eden Park, and a steady stream of Swedes, many from Hössna, to fill the community. The Swedes built houses along King Street and Reed Street, trading at C. A. Johnson's grocery store.
The family arrived on the SS Pavonia in the port of Boston on April 6, 1891. The Boston Passenger list has him, Maria, and their children arriving in Boston April 6, 1891 on the SS Pavonia out of Liverpool, giving his age as 54 (which fits with info found by Swedish genealogist and Swedish church records that he was born in 1837). Arrival also is consistent with leaving Krokstorp on March 15, 1891. Children listed were Hanna, Klas (Claes), Marta (Wilhelmina), Karl (Carl), Elin, and Emma (Amy). Consistent with other records, Edwin Sahlen came over separately (see notes for Edwin Sahlen).
The name was changed from Johan Johansson to John Johnson in the United States. Children were all known by name Johnson.
They initially lived at 204 Dudley Street in Providence. Most of the family seemed to be living there, and Oscar Larson and his wife, Hanna Johnson (their oldest daughter lived in the same tenement at 204 1/2. They joined Gloria Dei Church in Providence in 1905.
Here's what I know re: the Johnsons (from Nancy Kilstrom - January 2000):
" John Johnson -- Nana and my mom said he was a lumberman in Sweden. He was injured in a tree fall accident and lost his arm or the use thereof. Emigrated with the family after that to find other work. Described as having mental/behavioral problems as he aged. Nana never really wanted to talk about him. (Could be he suffered head trauma too in the accident) He is not buried with Maria in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery (at least his name is not on the stone) which seems odd. Mom and Lillian did not know why and couldn't remember the year of death. In 1977 Vital Statistics in RI couldn't find him without dates. I searched for his grave in several of the cemeteries; however, looking for a John Johnson in a Swedish cemetery is rather overwhelming! How do you know he died @ March 1911? (not sure, think I picked it up from RI Cemetery records, but I'm not sure that's right.) Did Amy have that written somewhere? Parents names unknown since I never had a death certificate."
Marcia Corry sent a death certificate for John Johnson, wife Charlotta Maria, died at the hospital at the State Institution at Howard, Cranston, RI, 26 April 1911, of senile dementia and arteriosclerosis. George E. Simpson was his doctor, and Alfred Juhlin the undertaker. He was buried in Locust Grove Cemetery. This appears to be the "right" John Johnson and fits what we know of him. Locust Grove Cemetery is still in Providence, but owned by the City.
The 1910 Census lists John, 76, living at 153 1/2 Wellington Avenue in Cranston with wife Maria, 65, daughter Amy, 21, and sister Johanna, 72. He was a laborer in a machine shop. John and Johanna came to the US in 1890, according to the Census record. They both were born in Sweden and spoke Swedish. Next door on Wellington Street were son Carl Victor Johnson, wife Sandra, and son Herbert.
Death record from Kent Co., Town of Warwick, 1908-1921, Vol. 3, page 28, item 2, gives date of death of a John Johnson as March 8, 1910 in Pontiac, cause of death cancer hepatis (?), age 84 years 2 mos. 6 days, born in Sweden, buried in Pontiac, Physician: Soderations, Undertaker: Alfred Juhlin. (from Nancy Kilstrom - FHL Microfilm 2,030,751). This is probably another John Johnson, in that he apparently was alive for the 1910 Census and also for Amy and Arthur's wedding in 1910. Also, the date of birth would have been January 2nd, 1826, rather than 1837 as in Swedish records. It's worth being sensitive to and rechecking through other records when possible. There were a lot of John Johnsons in RI.
Krokstorp is a very old farm in Hössna, Älvsborgs län. It was mentioned in 1542 as Krokstorph. By archeological finds there, it appears to go back to the stone age as a human settlement. Resided at: Wellington Avenue, Cranston, R.I. Emigrated to US: from Hössna, Sweden on 15 March 1891.

Maria Charlotta Danielsdotter Nilsson
F, #35, b. 3 September 1846, d. 17 August 1921
Parents
Biography
Maria Charlotta Danielsdotter Nilsson was born on 3 September 1846 in Stora Gärdet, Hössna, Älvsborg län, Sweden.
1 Johannes Johansson and she were married on 24 March 1871 in Hössna, Älvsborg län (Väster Götaland), Sweden.
2 She died on 17 August 1921 at age 74 in Cranston, Providence County, Rhode Island.
3 She was buried in August 1921 at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Eden Park, in Cranston, Rhode Island.
Household Examination 1870-76, p. 173, indicates a marriage date of January 29, 1871, slightly different than what marriage record shows.
After John Johnson died in 1911, Maria went to live with Amy Kells (her youngest daughter) at 71 Hawthorne Avenue in Eden Park, Cranston. She died at age 74. She listed Thyra Johnson as kin. A Thyra Cecilia Linden was born 30 July 1879 in Granna, Jönköping, Sweden, daughter of Johan Peter Linden and Edla Maria Peterson. She came to America in 1897, married Johan Johansson aka John Johnson 21 Jan 1905, and died in 1944. The 1930 Census lists a Thyra Johnson, 50, living with her husband, John, 50, and son Raymond A., 24, at 112 Jenkins Street in Providence. John was a machinist and Raymond a clerk. Thyra is also listed as kin of Lillian M. Johnson, died 10 March 1925 at age 7 mos., Lillie E. Johnson, died 20 October 1929, age 29, Margaret Johnson, died 13 May 1927, age 2 mos., and Martha Johnson, died 8 February 1926, age 80 years. A Thyra Johnson is listed in Providence city directories from 1938 to 1947. This seems to be the likely Thyra Johnson mentioned as next of kin, but there is no proof of it.
Her death certificate says she died at RI Hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage and pneumonia at 8:54 a.m., two days after being admitted. William P. Murphy was her physician.
