Howard Vaughan Clarke was born on 30 January 1936 in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 17 February 2007 at age 71 in Melvin Village, New Hampshire.

Howard attended Colby College in Maine from 1954 to 1957, at which time he entered the service. Howard studied Mandarin Chinese at the Army Language School, Monterey, CA, while in the U.S. Naval Security Group, then lived at Taipei, Formosa, with his wife Ann, whom he had met while at ALS, where they rented an apartment from a Chinese gentleman. He saw duty on the carriers Lexington and Bon Homme Richard as well as the submarine USS Tiru. After military service, he returned to Colby College in Maine, graduating in 1963. He worked for the Hathaway Shirt Co., becoming national sales manager for their Christian Dior accessories line, and later worked for Pendleton Woolen Mills, primarily in New York City. They lived in Darien, CT prior to retiring in 1998.
