Thomas Leonard
M, #1726, b. before 22 February 1591/92
Parents
Biography
Thomas Leonard was born before 22 February 1591/92 in Fletching, Sussex, England. This according to the Awty-Barton theory
1 He was buried.
1 This is a possible father of James and Henry.
Thomas Leonard was a forgeman or fyner (one in charge of a hearth where cast iron was made malleable) and apparently worked at ironworks in Cleobury-Mortimer, a small village on the Rea River about half way between Kidderminster and Ludlow, at Publow/Pensford in the NE corner of Somersetshire about 6 miles from Bristol, and at Bilston, Staffordshire, near Birmingham. The Leonards apparently had a claim to the ironworks in Bilston (William R. Deane, "Genealogical Memoir of the Leonard Family," (NEHGS, 1851) 5:404).
Bill Barton gives Thomas' date of birth as about 1585 and death about 1658, with marriage to Elizabeth White and 11 children. I'm not sure the Thomas Leonard born in Kent and this Thomas Leonard are the same, although Barton's is probably the ancestor in this line. George Marston Leonard's charts have Thomas Leonard baptized May 23, 1577, dying 1638, and marrying Lydia White. This line of descendancy is also found frequently in ancestry.com lineages that go back to the Sampson Leonard/Fiennes line. Which is right?
Thomas probably ended up in the Pontypool area, perhaps working for the Hanbury family who owned the ironworks there and at Bilston.
There are two articles by Stanley G. Leonard published before 1977 in the Pontypool Free Press: "Local Links with Early United States Iron Industry" and "The Early Iron Men of America." But I've neither seen the articles nor found anyone who has read them. I have also been to the Welsh central records facility near Pontypool and read through many past issues of the Pontypool Free Press without finding the articles in question.
There is a will of Thomas Leonard, yeoman, of Trevethin, 2 miles north of Pontypool, proven February 28, 1658. The inventory was signed by Morgan Leonard. None of the 11 children of Thomas are listed in this will, so it is probably not "our" Thomas.
The genealogy of the first three generations of descendants from Thomas Leonard is based on a statement by Hannah Leonard Dean, granddaughter of Thomas, to her grandnephew, Zephaniah Leonard, in 1732.
See Alice A. Everett, "Leonards of Monmouthshire and Somersetshire, England" (TAG, 1977): 53:103 for information about the Leonard children born in Publow/Pensford, Somersetshire.
A James Leonard is mentioned in notes and queries, Somersetshire and Devonshire, Vol 19, page 89: "seats in Cattistock Church, 1632 2 years before the death of Rev. John Mayo wrote: a seat on the west side (church) I have made to John Tizzer and James Leonard now of Merifield, Parish of Cattistock. Said James has paid 6 shillings for his sister." GML wondered whether it was James, son of Thomas, but I wonder if it could be a James, brother of Thomas and son of Henry. James, son of Thomas, would have been only 12 in 1632.
Fanny Leonard Koster's origins of Thomas as a descendant of the D'Acre/Fiennes Lennards have been proven wrong many times. Also, there are lots of other Leonards around England in the 1500's/1600's. Hasted's History of Kent, Vol. III, (1858) pp 211-213 -- Fanny Leonard says the earliest record of a Leonard she found was John Lennard, 1509-March 12, 1591, m. Elizabeth Harmon.
Rev. Dr. Fobes in his account of the Leonard family in Mass. Hist. Coll. vol III states that James Leonard had "three brothers;" but in his genealogical tree of said family he gives but two, viz. Henry and Philip. (quoted in NEHGS Register, 1851, p. 414(3). There were several more, left in England.
Lois Badger, "The Leonard Dictionary," mentions that a Nathaniel Leonard was a brother of James and Thomas, was first in Avalon, Nova Scotia, later migrated to Maryland. He was killed in an ironworks in Wales. His son John was in Springfield in 1639. His father had a sister, Dorothy, who married George Calvert, Lord Baltimore." This is from the Hudson River and Mohawk Valley History, Vol. 2, and was quoted in the Boston Transcript of 17 Mar 1915. It's probably wrong.
We postulate that the Leonards started moving from thesoutheast of England, primarily Sussex, to the west of England, primarily theBlack Country, about 1580 to 1600 or thereabouts. Queen Elizabeth’s government startedencouraging the iron furnaces to move to the west of England in the 1550’sbecause of their demands for wood for charcoal. “The forests of England in the ironmaking districts had largely beenconsumed by the ‘voragious’ iron works , and there were loud complaints thatthe whole community would be unable to obtain fuel for domestic purposes ifthis denudation were persisted in. Inresponse to these complaints, an act was passed in 1558, the first year of thereign of Elizabeth, which prohibited the cutting of timber in certain parts ofthe country for conversion into coal or fuel ‘for the making of iron,’ special exceptions being made for the wealdof Kent, the county of Sussex, and certain parishes ‘high in the wealt of thecounty of Surrey.”[1] “A more sweeping act was passed in 1584, whichprohibited the erection of any new iron works in Surrey, Kent, and Sussex.”[2]

Abigail Diman ("Abby, Abbie") Munro
F, #1731, b. 15 October 1799, d. 22 March 1886
Parents
Biography
Abigail Diman ("Abby, Abbie") Munro was born on 15 October 1799 in Bristol, Rhode Island.
1 Abraham Bryant Leonard and she were married about 1819 in Bristol, Rhode Island. She died on 22 March 1886 at age 86 in Providence, Rhode Island.
2 She was buried at Lot #652 in Old North Burial Ground, Bristol, Rhode Island.
Find-a-grave lists Abigail's birthday as 15 Oct 1799.
Abby Leonard was confirmed June 4, 1830 (along with Allen Leonard), but I'm not sure which Abby Leonard: this one, her daughter (who was 5) or another Abby. She probably was named after her father's sister, Abigail, who married Jeremiah Diman.
Abigail was her formal name, but she seems to be listed as Abby or Abbie in most records. Abby D. Leonard came back to Bristol from Providence to celebrate the Bristol Centennial in 1876. Her tombstone lists her as Abbie. As of 2005, the tombstone was of limestone and deteriorating badly. Abraham's, broken, was lying beside it. Both were in the Fitz Peabody plot.
In the 1870 Census, Abby is living in the 3rd Ward in Providence with the Fitz Peabody family.
In the 1880 Census, Abby is listed as living with her daughter, Abby M. Ellis, 49, and her daughter's husband, Henry W. Ellis, 50, and their two children, Abby W. Ellis, 28, and son, Halsey Ellis, age 26, in Providence, R.I. (National Archives Film T9-1212, page 407B).
Abby Dimond Munro was listed as age 86, 5 months, 7 days, at death March 22, 1886 (AC/VR RI). She listed her parents as Henry and Phebe Munro. She was residing at 226 Friendship Street, Providence, when she died. Cause of death is listed as old age. She listed Abraham Leonard ("of Abraham") and Lucy E. Leoffler as kin at death. Severine George Leoffler m. Lucy Ellen Bromeley April 5, 1879. The Leofflers had two small children who died soon after Abby died. In the 1901 Providence city directory, Severine G. Leoffler is listed as a machinist living at 37 Eighth.
Abby is buried next to Henry M. Leonard and George Leonard. The graves are next to the Peabody (Fitz Herbert Peabody) plot. Her stone reads "Abbie D. Leonard died March 22, 1886, in the 87th year of her life." Nearby to the NE is the stone of Abigail Diman, after whom she was probably named. Almost in the middle of the burial plot is a Gifford monument. Her daughter married a Gifford.
Her birth is not listed in the source document for Henry Munro and Phoebe Munro (The Monroe Book by Jean S. Guilford, Franklin: The Genealogical Publishing Service, 1993), but the death notice in the Bristol Phoenix, Saturday, April 3, 1886, p. 2, lists her as the daughter of the late Capt. Henry Munro of Bristol. Death in RI Vital Records, Bk 86, page 719, ct 28. also lists Henry Munro and Phebe Munroe as her parents. Abigail Diman ("Abby, Abbie") Munro lived in Bristol, Bristol, Massachusetts, in 1850. She lived in Bristol, Bristol, Massachusetts, in 1860. She lived in Rhode Island in 1870. She lived in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1880.

Elizabeth ("Betsey") Bryant
F, #1741, b. 24 March 1770, d. 1 March 1858
Parents
Biography
Elizabeth ("Betsey") Bryant was born on 24 March 1770 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
1 Ensign Nathaniel Leonard and she were married on 20 March 1788 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
2,3 She died on 1 March 1858 at age 87 in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York.
4 She was buried in March 1858 in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York.
Elizabeth ("Betsey") Bryant was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York. There were several Elisabeth or Betsey Bryants born in Middleborough about the right time to have been Nathaniel Leonard's wife:
- Betsy Bryant, daughter of Jesse Bryant and Mercy Shaw, born March 24, 1770 (Middleborough VR's, also Massachusetts Compiled Marriages 1633-1850,) married Nathaniel Leonard 2nd (intent) 20 Mar 1787, (mar) 24 Feb 1788, Middleborough. This is the one whom I think married my ancestor, Nathaniel Leonard.
- Elisabeth Bryant, daughter of Amos and Margaret Bryant, born October 31, 1770, in Middleborough, married William B. Howland 9 Dec 1790 in Freetown. Source: Massachusetts VR's, also Compiled Marriages 1633-1850.
- Betsy Bryant, daughter of Micah Bryant and Margaret Paddock, born January 26, 1773 (Middleborough VR, CD #203, p. 2. Ten people on Ancestry.com have chosen this Betsy as Nathaniel's wife.
Several records tie Betsey to Jesse and Mercy. Her birth record is so listed. All three were members of the First Church of Middleborough, and Jesse is mentioned as Betsey's father. Also, Betsey born in 1773 would have been 14 when banns were announced in 1787 and 15 when she married Nathaniel. Betsey born in 1770 would have been 17 and 18 respectively, much more to the custom of the time. Further, Betsey b. 1770 had a brother, Abraham, who was born 22 Jul 1783 and died 30 Sep 1796. Betsey and Nathaniel named their third child born 23 Dec 1796 Abraham Bryant Leonard.
Several other Elisabeth Bryants are possible but unlikely candidates:
- Elisabeth Bryant, daughter of Seth and Sarah Bryant, born July 13, 1772
- Elizabeth Bryant, "pauper 8 yrs," died October 15, 1843, in Middleborough at the alms house,, age 73 (born 1770), said to be daughter of Amos.
There is easily an explanation for picking yhe wrong Betsey as Nathaniel's wife. Various genealogists have various Betsy Bryants marrying Nathaniel Leonard. A Bryant genealogy by Albert Scott Bryant lists Betsy, daughter of Micah and Margaret, as marrying Nathaniel. A. S. Foley has Elizabeth, daughter of Amos and Margaret, as marrying Nathaniel. Hadaway on his web site has either Betsy by Jesse and Mercy or by Micah and Margaret as marrying Nathaniel. Two Betsy Bryants are in Middleboro VR's, Jesse and Mercy's, born 3-24-1770, and Micah and Margaret's, b. 1-26-1773. Elizabeth Bryant, dau. of Amos and Margaret, b. 10-31-1770, is also there (She may have died 15 Oct 1843 in the Middleborough Alms House). In none of the cases is the husband shown, although it is for some women in the records.
A Betsy Bryant of Freetown and William B. Howland of Middleborough married December 9, 1790 (bans published November 14). Elisabeth Bryant married Nathaniel Leonard, Jr., March 20, 1788 (bans February 29), but the Middleboro VR's don't list her parents. An Elisabeth Bryant married Josiah Manley of Middleborough August 16, 1744 in Brockton. And an Elisabeth Bryant married Israel Cook October 15, 1795, in Boston. None of these records list the parents of the bride.
"Hard copy" (as opposed to the CD versions) of the Middleborough VR lists the intentions and the marriage of Nathaniel Leonard, Jr., and Elizabeth Bryant as February 29 and March 20, 1788, respectively (Middleborough VR, Vol II, Book 2, Part 2, p. 111, p. 150).
The History of the Town of Middleborough, Massachusetts, 1669-1905 by Thomas Weston (Boston: Houghton-Mifflin, 1906) includes an appendix with the membership of the First Church of Middleborough. On page 673, record dated August 23, 1807, the date she became a member of the Congregation, member no. 686, Betsey Leonard, w. Nathan'l, m. 1788, o. Bryant, fa. 637, d." If death date is known, it is printed there in other cases of members. Betsy Bryant Leonard, who married Nathaniel in 1788, was member #686, and her father, Jesse, was member #637.
Until I find evidence otherwise, I believe Betsy Bryant, the daughter of Jesse Bryant and Mercy Shaw, was the wife of Nathaniel Leonard.
This Betsy had a brother, Abraham Bryant, son of Jesse and Mercy, who was born July 22, 1786 (Middleborough VR, CD 203, p. 298), and died September 30, 1796 (Records from the Nemasket Cemetery, Middleborough, CD 203, p. 2; Middleborough VR, CD 203, p. 271). It may be just a coincidence that Betsy and Nathaniel named a son Abraham Bryant Leonard in December 1796, or it may be evidence that Betsy was the older sister of Abraham.
A Betsey Leonard is listed in the 1820 Census in Middleborough as head of household of two, both women (Betsey and her daughter).
There was a Betsy Leonard, 80, living in the household of Rev. Lewis Leonard, husband of the late Betsey Leonard, in Cazenovia, NY, in the 1850 Census. Betsy Bryant Leonard didn't die in 1807 before/after Nathaniel skipped off to Canada. The Rev. Lewis Leonard maintained ties with the Middleboro area, with his arrival noted in the Middleboro Gazette 10/21/52:3 and his death 12/05/1856:2. The death of a Betsey Leonard, former Middleboro woman at age 88, is noted in the Gazette 3/13/58:3. This appears to have been our Betsy, who was born in 1770. "In Cazenovia, N.Y., on the 28th of February 1858, Mrs. Betsey Leonard, aged 88 years. Her native place was Middleboro. In 1827 she came to this place with her son-in-law, the late Rev. Dr. Lewis Leonard, in whose family she found a home soon after the early death of her husband. Having outlived all her children, she spent the last nine years of her life in the family of Mr. H. J. Weed, with her grand-daughter, and was kindly cared for to the last. Mrs. Leonard was distinguished for quietness, industry, and good will. She was a blessing to those with whom she lived, and a blessing to the Baptist Church, of which she was a member. A firm believer in Christ, the fruits of righteousness were apparent to the last. Pleasant are the memories of this aged disciple." (Cazenovia Republican).
