Biography

Henry Leonard was born in 1715 in Probably Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He and Euphemia Arabella Bellfame Kearny were married on 18 October 1751 in Monmouth County, New Jersey.1 He died before 2 November 1761 in Essex County, New Jersey.
He was apparently unmarried and had no male children in 1735 when his father made out his will.

From Bill Barton: "Capt. HENRY LEONARD, born 1715, married EUPHEMIA ARABELLA (BELLFAME) KEARNY 18 Oct. 1751, died 1761.[130] Euphemia was a daughter of Michael & Sarah (Morris) Kearny. She was not 18 years of age at the time her father wrote his will 12 Mar. 1740/1. In 1759 Capt. Henry inherited form his uncle Thomas Leonard (see ¶f. below) all his claim to the Indian Purchase of about 10,000 acres of land lying between Squam River and Metetieunk which he had obtained by deed from Capt. Henry's brother Samuel. Capt. Henry also inherited from his uncle a house and lot in Kingstown where Benjamin Maple kept a tavern. Henry's will was written 4 Nov. 1759 and probated 2 Nov. 1761 in Essex Co. Half his estate and personal was to go to his wife; the other half to his sons Robert Morris Leonard and Henry Leonard and daughter Susanna Leonard. Ten pounds to his sister Sarah. The executors were his brothers Samuel and Thomas and his brother-in-law Samuel Cook, Courtland Skinner, and his wife.

Check: Did Henry and his son Henry both die in 1761?

Parthenia Leonard

F, #17694, b. 1706, d. after 1735

Parents

Father*Judge Henry Leonard (b. about 1668, d. after 17 April 1739)
Mother*Sarah Morford (b. 1687, d. 1723)

Biography

Parthenia Leonard was born in 1706 in IImlaystown, Monmouth, New Jersey. Abiel Cook and she were married on 15 November 1723. She died after 1735 in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Her name - as 'Parthenia' - from handnotes in Oliver B. Leonard collection (and presumably by him), NJ Hist Soc Lib - and from O.B. Leonard, 'The Leonard Family in New Jersey' [subtitled 'From the Monmouth Inquirer nov. 8 and 15, 1883' but a reprint, possibly from The Jerseyman?], p. 3-4, also in Oliver B. Leonard collection, NJ Hist Soc Lib. In both places she is called "Parthenia Cook". NB that in a summary of "another note by a relative" passed to me by cousin Barnard Cook Taylor (rec'd Jan 1982), "Abiel Cook moved [from Southampton, L.I.] to New Jersey / m. Mary Leonard of Navesink and settled in Upper Freehold. Navesink is next to Middletown." (It's implied that this is Abiel Cook who "d. 1740", "not the same" as Abiel Cook who "settled in Southampton L.I. in 1640" [NOR the Abiel who I say m Parthenia Leonard]; their son is "Abiel Cook Jr." who is "b. Nov 15, 1723 d. Jan 24, 1797".)(I.e. no conflict - the Abiel who m Mary Leonard [if this is true] is fa of the Abiel who m. Parthenia.)

IN FACT - is it possible that this gives us a clue on the prob of whether there are 2 Abiel Cooks ca 1700 - & may give us the name of the w of one of them.

I note that Henry & Thomas Leonard are witnesses to will of Edward (2) Taylor of Colt's Neck; Edward gets land from Capt Samuel Leonard 12 Jun 1707; and has land with Henry Leonard Ex'r on 7 Dec 1709; Mrs Abiel Cook has a niece Deborah Leonard who is Abiel Cook (4)'s 1st cousin. Abiel Cook (3)'s w. is prob a da. of Henry Sr or Samuel Leonard Sr. Henry Leonard (whom I call 'Sr'), will of 1739, has some land adjoining that of Edward (2) Taylor deceased. MORE in notes on these. If a da. of Henry Leonard Sr, then she is a sister of Catherine Morford who m Edward (2) Taylor (for Henry Sr m. Lydia Morford, sister of Thomas Morford [this would be Thomas Morford Jr]); i.e. Abiel Cook (3) would be a bro-in-law of Edward (2) Taylor.

But - later note [25 Aug 02]: Per Mark S Miller, ped. FamilyTreeMaker (downloaded online), citing as compiler Enid Eleanor Adams in Geneal. Mag. of N.J., no. 210 (Sep 1983), gives Sarah Morford who m. Henry Leonard as da. of Thomas, & sis. of Catherine, Morford.

I note further (from COOK, GH) that the will proved 14 June 1745 of Samuel [A] Cook who m. Elizabeth Boggs is witnessed by Samuel & Henry Leonard (as well as Joseph Throckmorton), Shrewsbury.
