Biography

Samuel Leonard was born about 1698 in Monmouth, Co., New Jersey. Or about 1705? He and Elizabeth Wardell were married about 1720 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He died in 1742 at age ~44 in New Jersey. He was buried on 23 October 1742 at Christ Church in Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Will of Samuel Leonard of Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., dtd 14 Nov 1742, proved 16 Feb 1742/3. Inventory 30 Dec 1742.

Will mentions his wife, Elizabeth, sons Joseph and Thomas, an unborn child, and daughters (not named). Lands at Black River and in Burlington Co. to sons. Unborn child, if a son, each of his brothers to pay him 100 pounds. Residue of estate to wife and daughters. The will was witnessed by John and Joseph Wardell, who were Quakers. The 1733 will of Joseph Wardell of Shrewsbury names daughter Elizabeth Leonard. In addition, Samuel Leonard witnessed the will of Eliakim Wardell in 1737.

The names of the daughters might be discerned from the 1754 will of Mary Leonard, spinster of Shrewsbury, which names her brother Joseph Leonard, sister Joannah Parker, and elder sister Sarah, wife of Thomas Brinley, inventory of the estate was made by John Wardell. This points to these siblings being the children of Samuel Leonard and Elizabeth Wardell (per Sally Toomey).

Check additional sources to be sure that this is the Samuel that is the son of John Leonard and Elizabeth Almy. Sally Toomey, by process of elimination and by the evidence available, posits that this Samuel married twice and is this son. His father appears to have been a Quaker. This is likely to have been the Quaker branch of the family, although Joseph may have been a convert to the Church of England when he joined his uncle's church in Shrewsbury.

Bill Barton has this Samuel confused with the Samuel, son of Henry3, Samuel2, Henry1, who died 13 May 1790. Samuel Leonard had person sources.1

Biography

Samuel Leonard was born on 29 January 1711 in Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He and Mary Throckmorton were married on 4 March 1734 at Christ Church in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He died on 13 May 1790 at age 79 in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey.1 He was buried at Christ Church in Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County NJ.
Samuel Leonard, Jr., was a Justice of the Peace, Monmouth County, for many years. He was executor of his father's will in 1739 and witness to the 1748 will of Job Throckmorton. Abraham, a Negro boy in the service of Samuel Leonard, Esq., was baptized 22 May 1749 at Christ Church, Shrewsbury, and Oliver, another Negro child in service of Samuel, was privately baptized 30 Mar 1752 at Christ Church.

On 10 Mar 1790, Samuel made his will. He left 50 pounds to daughter Mary and 20 pounds to his sister Hughs (Hughes?). He left goods to daughters Mary, Lucy, and Susannah. He left real estate to his five children, viz., Mary, Deborah, Lucy, Susannah, and Samuel Leonard. Lucy Leonard died without issue while her father was still alive. Executors were daughter Deborah Holmes, Joseph Holmes, and brother-in-law Joseph Throckmorton. After their father's demise, Samuel, Mary, and Deborah Leonard sold their shares to Rev. Simon Pyle, father of the petitioner in an 1824 action. The said Susannah Leonard married the said Simon Pyle and had since died, leaving two children named Rebecca and Samuel Pyle. After the death of Susannah, Simon Pyle married Abigail Thorpe and had one son, Simon Pyle, who was under 14 years of age at the time.

When he married Mary Throckmorton, he was Samuel Leonard, Jr. of Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ. That does not necessarily mean he was the son of Samuel Leonard; but he was the younger of two Samuels then living in Monmouth Co.

Samuel, son of Henry Leonard and Sarah Morford married Mary Throckmorton, and his 1790 epitaph in Christ Church Cemetery in Shrewsbury identifies him as Samuel, son of Henry Leonard and Sarah Morford.

Bill Barton, following information from Stillwell, had this Samuel confused with the Samuel who married Elizabeth Wardell. Samuel Leonard had person sources.2,3

Bill Barton had this Samuel dying before December 20, 1742, and married to Elizabeth. This appears to be wrong -- another Samuel. Source of 1810 death date is Thomas Leonard's Rev. War pension file.
