Biography

Bartlett Leonard was born on 17 May 1788 in Worthington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He and Hannah Chapman were married on 9 May 1815 in Hinsdale, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He and Amelia Beatty were married on 7 May 1868. He died on 9 June 1875 at age 87 in Williamsfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio.

He moved with his father from Worthington, MA, in 1815, traveling by means of teams all the way, and settled in Williamsfield, Ashtabula Co., OH, at a time when his nearest neighbor was a mile and a quarter distant and when the country was so new that it is related that on one occasion when he was absent from home his wife was obliged to go out in the middle of the night to drive away a bear who was trying to steal a pig from the pigpen. Salt had to be carted from Syracuse, NY, by team, and the first barrel he and his father bought cost fifteen dollars. He built the first framed house in the township. He was a farmer and served as town treasurer for a number of years. Bartlett Leonard had person sources.^1,2
