Josiah Leonard
M, #5421, b. 1738, d. 1794
Parents
Biography
Josiah Leonard was born in 1738 in Hanover Township, Morris County, New Jersey. He and
Anna Rose were married in 1762 in Bridgehampton, Long Island, New York. He died in 1794 at age ~56 in Bridgehampton, Long Island, New York.
Josiah is supposed to have been the owner of an iron works. He put the Hessian troops off the scent by spreading flour on the floors to give the impression that the works were peaceful flour mills. He made bullets for the Revolutionary soldiers to use at Valley Forge.
Stephen Rose Leonard's journal (1848) states that his grandfather Josiah's children were seven in number: Stephen, Moses, Benona, Ephraim and Manassa (twins), James, Huldah. Stephen was born Sept. 2, 1765. He married Wines Loyd. She is now (1848) Mrs. Fairchild, living in NJ. Moses was born... Benona, who never married, was born April 7, 1768, died Jan. 18, 1818. The twins Ephraim and Manassa were born May 9, 1771. I don't know whom Manassa married. He last lived in Michigan and died in 1832. His family was reared in central New York. Ephraim married a Miller, from whom he was afterwards divorced. His second wife was Nancy, daughter of Enos Martin Esq. of Caldwell NJ. By his first wife he had one son, James, who lost his life at sea. By his second wife he had seven children: Enos, Jane, Sydney, May, Stephen, John, Caleb. Ephraim lived and brought up his family in Newark, NJ, and died August 16, 1643, aged 72, 3 months, and 7 days. James Leonard was born August 8, 1774. He last lived in Cayuga Co., NY. Huldah was born September 13, 1776, married Jonathan Grimes and lived and brought up her family in Parsippany, NJ. Notes: Esq. James Leonard (son of great grandfather Paul Leonard) was husband or father-in-law to Jerusha, mother of simple Martin Leonard.
Josiah and his family lived in Hanover, NJ. A Jonah (Josiah?) Leonard appears on the May 1776 Poll List for Hanover twp.
ECL had Josiah as a son of Stephen, but this is impossible, given Josiah's birth date. He must have been a grandson of Stephen. Mehitable is not mentioned in various sources (e.g., Stephen's diary, George Bement Leonard's history of Syracuse). Josiah Leonard had person sources.
