Sarah Shaw
F, #4741, b. about 1828, d. 12 August 1870
Parents
Biography
Sarah Shaw was born about 1828 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
Arthur Pennington and she were married on 12 August 1847 at Saint Phillips in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
Thomas Cook and she were married on 18 May 1856 at Saint Marks in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
William Thomas Empson and she were married on 22 September 1861 in Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Church, Aston juxta Birmingham, Warwick, England. She died on 12 August 1870 at age ~42 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. She was buried in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
She is listed as Sarah Empson, late Pennington, formerly Shaw, on Ellen's birth certificate.
According to her son, Lawrence W. Pennington, she was the only daughter among 13 children borne by her mother. Her father, William Shaw, married twice and had a total of 25 children. Her father is listed as an optician on her marriage record to Arthur Pennington.
After making ready to go to America, they finally started in March 1854 with their son Lawrence. Arthur Pennington died on the voyage over, and Arthur William Pennington was born on the same voyage. Sarah remained in Boston for a year and then returned to her old home in Birmingham with her two children.
Arthur William Pennington and Lawrence Willmore Pennington were baptized 26 Feb 1855 at St. Martin's, Birmingham, sons of toolmaker Arthur Pennington and Sarah Pennington and residing at Brownsgrove St.. The dates may be in conflict with Arthur Sr's having died enroute to America in 1854 and Sarah having remained in Boston two years at that time.
In the 1861 Census, she, Sarah Cook, 31, a mangler, son Lawrence, 8, a scholar, and son Arthur W., 6, were living at 119 Pope Street, All Saints, Birmingham, with Charles Wilmott, 21, glass cutter, and his wife, Frances, 31. Frances was a witness at her marriage to Arthur Pennington in 1847. Thomas Cook lived on Pope Street when he married Sarah in 1856, and they may have lived there after marriage. Sarah was listed as living at New Meeting Street when she married Cook. Sarah, Lawrence, and Arthur were listed as having been born in Birmingham.
She is listed as a widow of 32 on the marriage certificate with William Empson, 27, dated 27 Sep 1861. At the time of marriage, both he and she was living in Duddeston. His father is listed as William Empson, cordwainer. Her father is listed as William Shaw, optician. Witnesses to the marriage were John Empson and Ann Empson.
Cause of death is listed as "syncope -- by visitation of God -- immediate." That sounds like a heart attack. She was 41 when she died. She died at 8 Lower Camden Street.
Sarah Shaw married Arthur Pennington August 12, 1847, at St. Philip's, Birmingham. A son, Lawrence Willmore Pennington, was born in 1852. A child, Arthur William Pennington was christened February 26, 1855 at Saint Martin, Birmingham, after Sarah and her two sons returned to England.
A painting in my family has a note on it: "painted by my mother's brother, Lon Pennington." Lon is a nickname for Lawrence. Lawrence doesn't appear in the 1871 Census, although he was studying at the Midland Institute in Birmingham at that time. Arthur William Pennington was living with the Empson family (1871 Census). He later became a silversmith in Birmingham and had several sons, Arthur Lawrence Pennington and Ernest Pennington. I suspect Lawrence Pennington taught my great grandfather Ernest Regester to paint and possibly taught or sponsored him in the silversmithing trade.
Sarah Pennington, widow, married Thomas Cook, widower, jeweller, son of Joseph Cook, carpenter, May 18, 1856, at St. Mark, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Thomas was living on Pope St., and Sarah was living on New Meeting Street. No further information has turned up about Thomas Cook, and they apparently had no children.

Ellen Beatrice ("Nellie") Empson
F, #4743, b. 1 November 1868, d. 12 August 1899
Parents
Biography
Ellen Beatrice ("Nellie") Empson was born on 1 November 1868 in All Saints, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
William Thomas Baker and she were married about 1889 in Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom. She died on 12 August 1899 at age 30 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.
The family was living on Hingeston Street when she was born. She was registered by her mother, who signed with a mark.
At the 1902 marriage of her half-sister, Edith, she was listed as Baker.
She, her husband, and their children were living at 117 Spring Hill, Birmingham, on 2 Apr 1911, so she did not die 12 Aug 1899. Adding to confusion, there was a person of the same name who married Horace Almon Wood on 20 May 1891 in Providence, RI. She never immigrated to America. She has descendants living in England.
William Thomas Baker and Ellen Beatrice ("Nellie") Empson were married on 20 May 1891 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.
