Biography

Coggeshall Butts was born on 27 April 1751 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.1 He and Hannah Perry were married on 5 January 1783 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. He died on 27 March 1836 at age 84 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. He was buried in NT003 - Newport Common Burial Ground, Newport, Rhode Island.
In the month of October 1775, Commodore Hopkins wrote to Newport that he was in need of 50 men. Coggeshall volunteered and was assigned a midshipman on the Columbus under the command of Abraham Whipple. He was paid $12 per month. They were stationed at Reedy Island in the Delaware River and sailed in February 1776 for New Providence, where they captured a number of cannon and took them to New London, CT. They also captured a schooner. They had an engagement with the British warship Glasgow off Block Island. He was honorably discharged in July 1776. In 1777, he volunteered in a company of militia under Captain Church. He was on an expedition from Howland Ferry to Newport to surprise the Hessian Guard and captured two of them.

He was a prisoner of war in the Revolutionary War. He and Hannah apparently lived in Providence for a time. He resided with daughter Eliza in Bristol after his wife died.

Biography

Cornelius Bennet was born on 6 August 1766 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. He and Silvina Barlow were married on 14 August 1788 in Sandwich, Massachusetts. He died on 18 August 1840 at age 74 in Warren, Rhode Island. He was buried at Wr001 in Warren, Rhode Island.
Cornelius was a master mariner and a sailing master of Old Ironsides. A sailing master had direct supervision of the adjustment of the sails in order to make the most efficient progress towards a destination. He is best remembered for the night time sailing of the ship Hornet through the British blockade during the War of 1812. He said that his hair stood on end as he felt the bottom of the ship graze a point of land even as he heard the British sentry on a nearby ship call out: "All's Well."

Bristol Phenix: "In Warren, on the 18th, Cornelius Bennet, eng. USN, aged 74 years."

There was also a Cornelius Bennet of Dartmouth who was a physician in 1737 (Court case).

Jesse Barlow was born on 12 September 1749 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He and Sarah Nye were married on 7 December 1769 in Falmouth, Massachusetts. He died on 10 December 1815 at age 66 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. He was buried in Newport Cemetery, Newport, Rhode Island.
Jesse Barlow of Sandwich, MA, was a private in Capt. War Swift's Company which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775 (Battle of Lexington). He was subsequently a sergeant in Capt. Swift's Compnay of Col. Freeman's Regiment of Massachusetts Militia, which marched to Dartmouth and Falmouth, MA, on an alarm of September 6, 1778. He was later stationed at Staten Island, NY.

On July 1, 1775, Jesse Barlow and Simeon Wing had a vessel, commanded by Simeon's son, Thomas, loaded with cargo from the West Indies and provisions from Buzzard's Bay. This ship was captured by the British cruiser, "Falcon," commanded by Capt. John Linsey, and then retaken by a schooner from Dartmouth under the command of Capt. Daniel Egery.
