Paul Leonard
M, #3053, b. 1706, d. 5 November 1787
Parents
Biography
Paul Leonard was born in 1706 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and
Mary Alice Kitchel were married about 1737 in Morris, New Jersey. He and
Abigail Kitchel were married about 1762 in New Jersey. He died on 5 November 1787 at age ~81 in Hanover township, Morris County, New Jersey.
The New York Gazette or the Weekly Post Boy, 15 Oct 1753: "To be sold at public vendue, on Wednesday, the 24th of October, Inst. at two o'clock in the afternoon, on the premises: a plantation in the township of Hanover, in the county of Morris, in East-New_jersey, containing 150 acres of land; there is on it a good dwelling house and barn, a young orchard, and a sufficient quantity of medow ground, the chief part of which is cleared; the said plantation is now in the possession of Paul Leonard, by whom a good title will be given for the same."
In "A History of Randolph Township," the list of deeds for part of William Penn's lands in New Jersey taken by Mr. Hampton ye 22nd February 1757 includes Paul Leonard, 433 acres. part of lot 4, 260 pounds. A William Leonard is also listed for 267 acres, part of lots 82-86, 90 pounds.
ECL: NJ Abstract of Wills dtd. September 26, 1787, Paul Leonard of Hanover: Administration is given to David Leonard, his son. His fellow bondsman was Moses Kitchel. He married (2) Abigail, who declined administration of his will. He wanted to leave his estate to James and Joshua (sons?), but the Morris Co. court apparently didn't accept his handwritten will. Witnesses to his will were Stephen and Moses Leonard (ECL notes: who were they? Answer: grandsons of Paul thru 1st wife and son Josiah). Will 684N. B. 29, p. 473. Int. 1787. Inv. 1787. Ren. 1787.
He joined the Hanover Presbyterian Church in Morris Co. on 6 March 1748 (Hanover Presbyterian Church records, Internet). He was overseer of highways in Morris Co. in 1740.
ECL mentions Adam, Daniel, Mary, James, "a child," Lidia, and Joshua and notes that there may have been other children.
GML notes Paul, soon after his father's death in 1743, settled on a farm in Alexandria, Hunterdon Co., NJ. His father died in 1732, per his will.
Stephen Rose Leonard's journal (1848) states that Paul had two brothers, Silas and Elijah, who were occupied in the foundry business in Massachusetts and removed to New Jersey, locating themselves in the vicinity of Rockaway Neck, Morris Co., where Paul Leonard reared his family of seven children: Josiah, James, David, Phebe, Lydia, Huldah, Diadema. The latter two appear to be children of Paul's father, Stephen. He fails to mention Daniel, Adam, Joshua, and Mary, so there would have been nine altogether.
ECL or GML insert 117A has Josiah4, Stephen3, James2-1. But Josiah is not the son of Stephen, but of Paul. Josiah was born in 1738, while Stephen died in 1732.
One genealogy says that Paul and Abigail had two children: Adam and Daniel. But Abigail would have been in her 40's then and had had 12 children by Edmund Crane.
Chapter 20. Leonard Ancestry of the Jansen Daughters. Virginia C. Jansen, 22 Feb 2002, Hist314 WS/TC: "After his wife's death, Paul Leonard married Abigail, widow of Edmund Crane who died in 1762 leaving eleven children. The widow Abigail Crane was born Abigail Kitchel in 1717, a sister of Phebe's mother Mary Allis Kitchel and Moses' father Joseph Kitchel. Paul and Abigail then moved to Alexandria twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ, and had two more children, Adam and Daniel Leonard. (But Paul and Mary already had had children named Adam and Daniel. Had they died?) Adam would have been born 1763/4 in Hunterdon Co., NJ, and Daniel would have been born aft. 1765 in Hunterdon Co. Abigail would have been in her mid-40's. Neither Paul's nor Abigail's wills indicate any children together.
Hanover Presbyterian Church records has an unnamed daughter of Paul baptized 8 April 1750. Paul is listed as a property owner in Hanover twp. in 1752, along with David Leonard. Paul Leonard had person sources.

Rev. Silas Leonard
M, #3055, b. 1708, d. 27 March 1764
Parents
Biography
Rev. Silas Leonard was born in 1708 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and
Elizabeth Harris were married on 22 September 1739. He died on 27 March 1764 at age ~56 in Goshen or Newburgh, Ulster now Orange County, New York.
He graduated from Yale in 1736 and was ordained in 1738. He was a minister in Goshen, NY, which is near Newburgh. He had five sons and six or seven daughters, according to his Yale Biography (per ECL). He was admonished by the Presbytery for his negligence to the Presbytery as he sympathized with the Rivalists. In his will he calls himself "of Newburgh." All of the children are mentioned in his will except George (died?). NY Wills, probated May 21, 1764, Silas of Newburgh, wife Elizabeth...(040 (L26) 1764, Mar 20, May 21). Will mentions wife Elizabeth, sons Silas, James, John, William, and George; daughters Jane Carpenter, Elezebath Smith, Cateran Smith, Temper and Abigail. (No Leonard Leonard, no Lucy)
Harriet Leonard Standish mentions him in the Leonard Dictionary, p. 149, with a reference to Fanny Leonard Koster's charts. Fanny Leonard Koster says he had five sons and six daughters and leaves it at that. William A. Leonard's book, Stephen Banks Leonard, quotes the same number.
Silas Leonard wrote his will at Newburgh Precinct, Ulster (now Orange) Co., NY 27 March 1764. It was proved 3 May 1764. It names his six sons and five daughters. His wife, son Silas, and Benjamin Carpenter were named executors of the will. Gilbert Denton, James Denton, and Leonard Smith were witnesses. His farm in Newburgh was offered for sale in May 1781.
Silas was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Goshen, NY, from 1734-58. A family history says that "When the Leonards moved from New York to Goshen they are said to have brought the finest setting out of furniture and silverware that ever had come into Orange County. Mrs. Leonard used to say that she had never had to put her hands into hot water, probably meaning dish water. She had a gold snuff box and thirteen damask silk dresses" (from galileo15@aol.com).
Can't find further information about children. There were lots of descendants.
The 1790 Census has a Jeremiah Leonard and family in Middletown and a Ruth Leonard household of 2 women in New Windsor, but neither of these connect to the family of Silas. There is a Rev. War pension file for Henry Leonard who was born in the 1740's and was from New Windsor in Ulster County. There is nothing in the file to link Henry with this family, except that they were both in Ulster/Orange Co. Rev. Silas Leonard had person sources.

He owned 125 acres at Hanover, NJ, in 1778 as "joshiah".
Or did he died 5 Nov 1778 in Hanover, Morris Co. NJ?
Harriet Leonard Standish lists (p. 148) a Seth G. Leonard as a son of Joshua and Sarah Condict, apparently from Fanny Leonard Koster's chart. Seth G. had 10 children.
SBL doesn't mention a son, Elijah, and says only descendants of Silas and Martha can be definitely traced. First Church of Morristown records also don't mention Elijah but do mention his other children. They add a Huldah, who married Philip Hall.
There's a Morris Co. will: 151N. B. 8, p. 442. Int. 1761. Ren. 1761. Joshua Leonard had person sources.

Parents
Biography
Deacon David Leonard was born about 1738 in Hanover Township, Morris County, New Jersey. He and
Sarah Gobel or Goble were married about 1758 in Morris County, New Jersey. He and
Betsey Brant were married in 1781. He died on 16 January 1805 at age ~67 in Morris, Morris County, New Jersey.
David Leonard appears on the Hanover Township, Morris Co., NJ census/tax list from 1783 to 1814. He was a property owner in 1752. Two David Leonards appear on the May 1776 Poll List, one in Hanover twp. and one in Mendham twp.
He was the administrator of his father, Paul Leonard's, estate in 1787, witnessed by Jabez Campfield. David and brother Paul each had 77 acres in Morris Co., NJ in 1809. Nephew John witnessed David's will in 1805 in Morris Co., NJ.
ECL does not mention David, but has a note, "there may have been other children." David Leonard Sr.'s partition to heirs dtd 23 Apr 1821 refers to his will dtd 16 Jan 1805, children: William, David Jr., John, Stephen, Mary Leonard Kinney, Sarah Leonard Freeman, Patty Leonard Fitzgerald, Theodora Leonard Ward, Hannah Leonard Guy. Abigail Leonard. (Heirs to Estates, Morris Co., p. 233). These cannot be accounted for in this genealogy. The partition involved Lot 4, located on the road from John Roberts' place to Turkey. Lot 5 was at the intersection of the road to Chatham with the road to Bottle Hill (now Madison). Source: Abstracts of Partitions and Divisions of Morris Co. Estates filed at Morristown, NJ 1785-1907, abstracted by Virginia Alleman Brown, 1984.
David's will mentions only wife Sarah.
Did he marry one of the Goble daughters? Two of them, Mary and Sarah, daughters of Stephen or Daniel Goble, married Leonards in Morris County around 1750. Daniel Goble's will mentions a Sary Leonard. A Goble descendant has the Leonard y-dna haplogroup and pattern. An adoption?
There was another David Leonard who married Phebe Ward. Was this David his son? Some family trees have this David Leonard married to Mary Hall. His will, division of lands, and other records don't support this.
