Biography

Seth Leonard was born on 5 May 1752 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He and Nancy Hall were married on 12 April 1807 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts. He died on 20 October 1821 at age 69 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.2
ECL: He was a Revolutionary War pensioner. He was found dead in his house with the door locked. ECL says he died unmarried. His Revolutionary War pension file does not mention his parents, wife, children, or any relatives. He gives an accounting of his property and his debts and says: "My family consists of myself alone, aged sixty eight years, common laborer, able to perform not more than half a day's work in a day, and about half support myself." He signed with a mark; someone else supplied his signature. Seth Washburn, Daniel Woodward, and Asa White supplied testimonials in his behalf to Nahum Mitchell.

There was a Seth Leonard, a son of Moses Leonard of the Solomon Leonard line, who is said to have died in Raynham 20 October 1821 and died married to Nancy Hall. He and Nancy had 3 sons. There's ample room for confusion between the two, since people have assigned the same death date to both.. Seth Leonard had person sources.3,4

Biography

Capt. Benjamin Leonard was born on 4 December 1745 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He and Hannah Pratt were married on 16 June 1770 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 He died on 8 September 1801 at age 55 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was buried at Eaton North Cemetery in woods back of Centre Street, near Cross Street, in Middleborough, Massachusetts.3
Children listed in Eaton Genealogy, p. 443. He died of consumption (TB). ECL mentions that he had two grandsons still alive in Middleboro in 1893. Fanny Leonard Koster lists the same children on Chart 4, except that she calls Zebedee Babidee, as does Standing's table of descent. His home still stands at 270 Old Centre Street, Middleboro in 2017, being refurbished by a couple named Easterbrooks. They estimate it was build in 1720-1740.

He served several enlistments as private and, in 1776, as sergeant in Capt. William Tupper's 6th company, Colonel Sproutt's regiment. DAR # 67046.

He may have been the Benjamin Leonard who, in 1796, bought the "New Forge" on the Nemasket River, originally built about 1762 and destroyed by fire in 1785. Partnership included George Leonard (Benjamin's brother?), Abiel Washburn, and Abner Bourne. (Weston, p. 288.)

Another source lists date of marriage as December 11, 1770.
