SonIsrael Greenleaf Leonard+ (b. 6 January 1820, d. 3 March 1850)

Biography

Israel Leonard was born on 4 March 1765 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He and Eunice Greenleaf were married in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi. He died after 19 January 1839 in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi. Israel left a will dtd. 19 Jan 1839 with his estate going to his three grandchilden: Elizabeth Thistle, Joseph Leonard , and Israel Leonard, all apparently under the age of 21. He had doubts about Israel's worthiness to receive a portion of the estate and directed his executors to pay Israel $10,000 when he reached the age of 25 if by his conduct he was deemed worth. His grandaughter's husband, Laxley H. Thistle, was appointed executor.

He apparently left a considerable estate. The 1820 census is hard to read, but he apparently had a substantial family and a number of slaves. It is unclear who and how many his children were.

His grandson, Israel, b. abt. 1821 in Natchez, married Miranda L. Butler 30 Jan 1842. Israel died 3 Mar 1850 in Sacramento, CA, and is buried in the Sacrameto City Cemetery (Find-A-Grave). He probably was a "49-er," part of the Gold Rush.

In the 1850 Census, Miranda Leonard, b. 1827, was still living in Natchez, as was Joseph b. 1828. Miranda had a daughter, Rozelia L., b. 1845 in Natchez. Joseph Leonard b. 1828 was also living in Adams Co., but was no longer there in the 1860 Census.
