James Leonard was a native of NJ. Five years before the Revolutionary War, he removed to the vicinity of Lake Champlain, where Udney was born. At the outbreak of the War, his situation was too exposed to Indian incursions. So he returned to his native state, where he remained until 1786. Then, induced by descriptions of the beauty and fertility of the land on the Delaware River, he homesteaded on the east side of the River, a little below Cannonsville. He was engaged in farming, clearing his land and raising cattle. The wolves killed nearly all his sheep, and the bears his hogs, so that for many years had to give up raising them.

He was originally buried in the Cannonsville Cemetery, but removed and relocated to the Walton Cemetery when the Cannonsville Reservoir was constructed. James Leonard had person sources.2

Biography

Abigail Avery was born on 11 October 1744 in Groton, New London County, Connecticut. Ebenezer Leonard and she were married on 25 September 1765 in Groton, New London County, Connecticut.1 She died after 1837 in Ledyard, Connecticut.
There may have been more than one Elizabeth Avery in Preston at the time.

Was it this Ebenezer that married Abigail Avery, or was it the Ebenezer who was the son of Samuel Leonard and Lydia Stanton? Family History: Connecticut Genealogies #1 has the latter, with the birth date of 11 Oct 1748. The birth date of 11 Oct 1748 is in Ebenezer's Rev War pension file on Fold3.com, which definitely states that the Ebenezer who married Abigail Avery was the son of Nicholas Leonard.
