The subject of this notice was born near Morristown, Essex Co., New Jersey, and was the eldest of ten children--six girls and four boys. In 1802 she abandoned her maiden names of Kitchell and was married to John Leonard, soon afterwards moving to Vermont on Lake Champlain near the mouth of the Onion River. In 1825 she was left a widow withseven children, four of whom are still living to mourn her loss. In 1844 she went with her children to Indiana; then, in 1856, she accompanied three of her daughters to Kansas. In 1865 herson, John Leonard of Healdsburg, brought her to this state, since which time she has resided with her daughters in Potter Valley, Mrs. Sam. Mcwhinney and Mrs. Thomas McCowen.

For 23 years a wife, 44 years a widow, and 65 years a mother, her life has been one of unceasing care and usefulness. Ever genial and kindly, sympathing with the your, encouraing and counselling the middle-aged, mourning with the aged, every one of her numerous family found in her the gentle voice, the comfort, none else could give. In Nevada are living the second, third, and fourth generations of her descendants; in this county are three generations. In coming to this State she visited her brothers and sisters in New Jersey, whom she had not seen for 52 years..." Catherine Kitchel had person sources.1
