Benjamin Leonard was born in 1792 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He and Mary Polly Berrie were married about 1816 in Beallsville, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

In the 1850 Census, he was living near Bridgeport, Fayette Co., PA with his wife and children Eli, Amanda, and Harriet. He was a miller.

According to his daughter, Harriet Leonard Fishburn, he was a devout churchman. After he married Mary Berrie, he moved into Beallsville. He built and was the proprietor of a hostelry in Beallsville, called "Fountain Inn" on the new and very important National Road that was near the Leonard farms. He managed it for many years in the days when the covered wagon carried all the merchandise across the mountains and came along in the Conestoga Wagons like caravans crosing the desert. Sometimes as many as seven or eight six-horse teams would put up for a night's lodging. Once my mother sent across the mountains with one of their traveling agents for a "flat" of leghorn (a plaited fabric made of Italian wheat used in making straw hats). She paid $10.00 for it and it made into a bonnet which she wore for many years. She also had a number of Paisley shawls for herself and daughters from the same source.

The National Pike was a great thoroughfare before the days of railroads and steamboats. Once (1826), General LaFayette came and stopped in Beallsville. Mother shook hands with him, and the children strewed flowers in his path, according to her daughter, Harriet.

It appears she never married. She was still living with her brother in the 1900 Census.

In the 1870 Census, he was a carpenter living with his daughter, Mary D., born 1874. In the 1900 Census, he was a farmer living with his sister in Flemington Village, Raritan, NJ. A niece, Maxine D., b. April 1873, was living with them.

In 1870, the family was living in Washington, Linn Co., IA. He became a prominent lawyer and engaged as counsel for several railroad corporations.

Sarah Ann Leonard was born on 17 June 1842 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.¹ Martin Gilchrist and she were married. They had five children, two girls and three boys. She died on 6 June 1923 at age 80 in Iowa.

Rebecca M. Leonard was born about 1844 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.¹ Chorydon Gilchrist and she were married on 27 March 1864 in Iowa. They had two sons and a daughter. She died on 27 March 1874 at age ~30 in Iowa.

Hannah M. Leonard was born on 8 November 1848 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.¹ She died on 25 February 1937 at age 88.
