John Gladding

John Gladding was born on 23 October 1784 in Bristol, Rhode Island. He and
Nancy Coggeshall were married on 1 May 1808 in Bristol, Rhode Island. He died on 1 January 1839 at age 54 in Pharsalia, New York.
John was apprenticed to the rope-making trade with Major Howland, who had his rope walk on Bristol Common. In the early winter of 1816, John and Benjamin, with their wives and four small children, left Bristol in a two-horse wagon proved by a Mr. Bosworth who had gone on ahead to join a group of families who had left Bristol and settled in Chenango Co., New York. They crossed the Hudson River on the ice and then travelled through the woods. John located in the town of Pharsalia in Chenango Co., where he esta blished a cordage business which continued to be run by his descendants until after 1900.
John and his brother Benjamin married Coggeshall sisters. John Gladding had person sources.
