Henry ("Curt Mantel") Plantagenet,, II, King of England, was born on 5 March 1133 in Le Mans, Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France. He and
Eleanor deChatellerault de Aquitaine were married on 12 May 1152 in Bordeaux, Gironde, Aquitane, France. He died on 6 July 1189 at age 56 in Chinon, Indre et Loire, France.
King Henry II ruled from 1154 to 1189. He succeeded Stephen, a cousin, who had usurped the thrown from Matilda, daughter of Henry I. He was the first of the Angevin kings. He was succeeded by Richard I, "the Lion-Hearted."
Henry, Duke of Anjou, married Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152. She had been divorced by King Louis VII of France 8 weeks earlier. This gave Henry the lands of Normandy, Anjou, and Aquitaine in northern France. By the Treaty of Westminster (December 1153), Henry was recognized as the heir to Stephen, his cousin, King of England. Stephen died October 25, 1154, and Henry, styled Henry II, became KIng of England, reigning from 1154 to 1189. More about his reign can be found in Kenneth O.
