Biography

Bradford Leonard was born on 23 February 1811 in Wareham, Massachusetts. He and Ann Elizabeth Janes were married on 3 October 1838 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. He died on 17 November 1871 at age 60 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was buried on 17 November 1871 in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah.
In the the 1840 Census, he was in Des Moines, Iowa Territory. A merchant in Utah, 1850 Census, living with wife Ann Elizabeth and two sons, George B. and John T. He joined the LDS Church. In the 1860 Census, the household included Bradford, Ann, Julia b. 1839 in Canada, Sarah b. 1842 in Canada, George Bradford b. 1842 in IA, Frederick W., b. 1848 in UT, and Catherine, b. 1858 in UT. Julia was George Bradford Leonard's wife. Sarah was her sister. Julia and Sarah were orphans who came to Nauvoo, IL, with the Snyder family. Bradford, Ann Elizabeth, and sons George B. and John T. appear in the 1851 Census of Salt Lake County.

ECL gives his date of birth, 11 Feb 1811, at Wareham, MA. "He married at Pittsfield Ann Elizabeth Janes, daughter of William Janes and L-----e Pepoon. She was born 1812 in Pittsfield, MA. She was alive 1857 in Salt Lake City. He may have had other wives as he became a Mormon. He was a merchant. Utah Historical Magazine Volume 30, p. 250, has the following: 'He joined the Mormon Church (Journal of the History of the Church).' 'June 25, 1848, Dr. Wellan Richards desires financial assistance from Bradford Leonard to go to Utah.' 'September 19, 1848, Bradford Leonard gives liberal donation to Delegate Almond W. Babbitt to go to Washington, D.C., to represent the Provincial State of Demarest.' (Deseret) 'September 2, 1861, George A. Smith accompanied Bishop David Evans from Lehi to Camp Floyd (later called Fort Crittenden).' 'Old Bradford Leonard is in Perry's old store, living alone.' (According to Phil Leonard, a descendant, Bradford Leonard had a store at Camp Floyd. After Gen. Johnston left, Camp Floyd went from a population of 5,000 to a few hundred. Bradford was deputized to buy up the supplies the Army was disposing of.))

ECL added a son to Bradford: "#1877. Providence VR's show 'death of George F. Leonard, son of Bradford and Elizabeth February 20, 1925, age 60.' This is the son of another Bradford Leonard, not a son of this Bradford. There were several Bradford Leonards living in RI.

Somewhere I'd picked up the date of 2 Feb 1858 for Bradford's death. That's wrong. Also, Andrew S. Leonard was erroneously added as a son of the couple. Andrew S. Leonard was in Des Moines County, IA, at the same time as Bradford and Elizabeth, but was not their child. Bradford Leonard had person sources.1 He lived in Des Moines, Iowa Territory, in 1840. He immigrated between 25 October 1849 and 29 October 1849 to Utah. He lived in Great Salt Lake County, Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory, in 1850. He lived at 17th Ward in Great Salt Lake City, Great Salt Lake, Utah, in 1860. He lived in Utah in 1870.
