Jabez Bowen, Lld

Biography

Jabez Bowen, Lld, was born in 1739 in Rhode Island. He and Experience ("Peddy") Leonard were married on 21 May 1801 in Providence, Rhode Island. He died in 1815 at age ~76.
He graduated from Yale 1759. He first married Sarah Brown, of RI's prominent Brown family. He was involved in their shipping business, including the rum, molasses, slaves, and China trade. He was a colonel in the RI militia during the Revolutionary War. He was also Lt. Governor of Rhode Island 1778-79 and 1781-86. He was Chief Justice of the RI Supreme Court. He was also Chancellor of Brown University.

He bought timber and land from George Leonard 1 Nov 1798 -- papers at OCHS.
