Biography

Perez Leonard was born in 1747 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He and Elizabeth Eaton were married on 10 January 1771 in North MIddleboro Congregational Church, MIddleboro, Massachusetts.1 He died on 6 January 1801 at age ~54 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 He was buried in North Middleboro Cemetery, Middleboro, Massachusetts.3
They may have had other children. They lived at the corner of Bedford and Clay streets in Taunton. In the 1790 and 1800 Censuses, they were listed in Middleborough. The 1790 Census shows a family of 5; the 1800 Census shows a family of 4.

Elizabeth Eaton Leonard was appointed Administratix of the estate of Perez Leonard 23 January 1801. It was witnessed by Henry Leonard (his father?) and Caleb Hall. Probate record PR 34:260.

The information on Perez Leonard and Elizabeth Eaton has been updated and corroborated by Jan Infante in an e-mail to me dated 22 January 2006, also including a piece from the genealogical section of the Boston Transcript. Her information should be on file with the Mayflower Society in Plymouth. Perez Leonard had person sources.4

Benajah Leonard was born on 21 July 1765 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He and Deborah Maxham were married on 1 January 1792 in Carver, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He died on 6 August 1815 at age 50 in Wareham, Mississippi.
He and his brothers Ichabod and Rowland built the dam at Tremont, the old Washington works. He apparently built a furnace there, per documents at OCHS. ECL says he was a Quaker and he died of lockjaw. Benajah Leonard had person sources.2,3

He was buried at Mustard Burying Ground in Bowdoinham, Maine.
He was a bloomer. Sometimes referred to as Joseph, Jr. (Middleborough VR's on births of children). When did he move to Maine?

Note that there were at least seven Joseph Leonards in Middleborough at this time -- easy to confuse them. Thank goodness this one moved to Maine and died later than the others! Joseph Leonard had person sources.3,4

Archippus Leonard was born on 4 December 1758 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He and Asenath Cobb were married on 6 January 1780 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.2 He died on 13 January 1834 at age 75 in Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.3
He was a Revolutionary War soldier and pensioner (DAR). In the 1790 Census, he shows as a family of 4 in Middleborough (child missing? probably a son? or a brother living with them?). He doesn't show in the 1800 Census for Middleborough. According to Weston, History of the Town of Middleborough, 1906, p. 396, he lived on Everett Street in the section of town known as Purchade and worked at the furnace of Judge Oliver at Muttock. ECL refers to him as Archillus.

He applied for a Revolutionary War pension 18 April 1818 at Plymouth Co., MA. He had a son age 17 at the time. Archippus Leonard had person sources.4,5

Rowland Leonard, Esq., was in business with his brothers, Benajah and Ichabod, under the firm of Rowland Leonard and Company in Wareham, according to Plymouth Co. records noting a suit over a note dated March 21, 1795. He is mentioned in his brother's application for a Revolutionary War pension as living in Wareham in 1836. Rowland Leonard had person sources.2,3

Ichabod Leonard was born on 28 March 1763 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He and Sarah Mackie were married on 15 May 1800. He died on 17 July 1831 at age 68.
He was town clerk of Wareham from 1819 to 1828. This branch of the family died out with his children, none of whom had children. Ichabod Leonard had person sources.2,3
