Biography

William Shaw was born before 16 May 1799 at Saint Philip's in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He was an optician.

In 1871, he appears to be 72, optician, born in Warwick living in Ecksall Bierlow, near Sheffield with wife, Mary, 49, and sons Herbert, 19, a carter, Martin, 11, Frank, 8, and Arthur (?), 7. He and Ann Nicholls were married on 2 October 1816 at Saint Martin's in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Witnesses included Sophia Nicholls. He and Mary were married about 1842 in Yorkshire, England? He died in October 1873 in Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
There are several William Shaws baptized in Birmingham between 1797 and 1801. William, son of and John and Elizabeth Shaw, bap. 21 Oct 1800 in Birmingham - St. Philip. John and Elizabeth had John bap. 21 Dec 1770, Birmingham - St. Philips, Hannah bap. 22 Jan 1772, Birmingham - St. Philips, Mary bap. 28 Mar 1774 Birmingham - St. Philips. William, son of John and Sarah, bap. 16 May 1799, in Birmingham - St. Philip; John and Sarah had Elizabeth bap. 11 Oct 1773, Birmingham - St. Philips and Sarah, bap. 31 Mar 1777, Birmingham - St. Philips. William listed as b. about 1798 in Birmingham - St. Thomas, had different children and is not "our" William. William b. in 1797 in Birmingham - St. Martin, was buried in 1816 and is not "our" William.

Several William Shaws married Anns abt. 1820 in Birmingham. These include Mary Ann Grindley m. 27 Apr 1820, Birmingham - St. Martin's, Ann Nichols m. 2 Oct 1816, Birmingham - St. Martin's, Ann Haxley m. 7 Nov 1825, Birmingham - St. Martin's. Ann Daniels Nichols, dau. of William and Elizabeth, bap. 1 Jun 1798, Birmingham - St. Philips. Church recorded William as marrying Ann Nicholls in 1816. There may have been children born between 1816 and 1821 who are not recorded.

He is listed as an optician on the marriage certificate of William Empson and Sarah Cook. He apparently married twice, first to Ann LNU, and was said to have a total of 25 children, of which 13 were born to one wife, all but Sarah males. This may not be accurate. He apparently did marry (2) Mary b. abt. 1822, Preston, Lancashire, and moved at some point to Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire, where he is first listed as a silver smith, box optician, an optician and later as a goldsmith. He is listed as working in a lab in 1841 in Ecclesall Bierlow, but the family is living in Birmingham in 1841 Census. In the 1871 Census, he and Mary and several children were living in Eccleslaw Bierlow. He was listed at age 82 in the 1881 Census there, although there were a number of William Shaws there.. He was apparently baptized 16 May 1799 in St. Philip's, Birmingham.

He was listed as an optician, 72, born Birmingham, wife Mary, 49, born Lancashire, sons Herbert, 19, a carter, Walter, 11, Frank, 8, and Arthur, 7, all born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, living on London Road, Wright's Hill, Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, England.

In the 1861 Census, William is listed as 62, born in Birmingham, box work optician, wife Mary, 39, born in Preston, Lancashire, children Eliza, 11, Herbert, 9, and William W., 1, children all born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, all living in Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield.

In the 1851 Census, William is listed as 52, born in Birmingham, German silver smith, wife Mary, 29, born in Preston, Lancashire, children Samuel, 19, silversmith, Alfred, 14, silversmith, Emma, 3, and Eliza, 1. Samuel, Alfred, and Emma are listed as having been born in Birmington, Warwickshire. Eliza was born in Sheffield. It would appear that the family moved from Birmingham to Sheffield in the 1848-1850 time period.

In the 1841 Census, William is listed as 40, born in Birmingham, wife Ann, children Thomas, 20, clerk, Fredrick 14, Sarah 13, Samuel 9, Joseph 7, Alfred 5, and Thomas, 3, all living on Suffolk Street in St. Philip's parish, Birmingham. Place of birth is not listed. Name was initially listed as Sholl, later corrected to Shaw. William's father, John, was listed as living on Suffolk Street when he died in 1823.

There were a number of Sarah Shaws in the 1841 Census. The most likely one is Sarah, 13, the daughter of William Shaw and his wife. There was a John Shaw, jeweler, 35, living in St. George, Birmingham, with wife Sarah and children, including Sarah 7 and Emma 5.

A William Shaw, b. February 1806, christened March 2, 1806, Aston juxta Birmingham, Warwick, son of Joseph Shaw and Mary. A William Shaw, son of William and Ann Shaw, born September 1, 1807, christened October 13, 1807, Saint Martin, Birmingham.

All of William and Ann's children appear to be born in Birmingham. All of William and Mary's children were born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. William Shaw was baptized on 16 May 1799 at Saint Philip's in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He was christened on 16 May 1799 at Saint Phillips in Birmingham, Warwick, England.

SonJohn Empson (b. June 1844, d. 20 April 1896)

Biography

William Thomas Empson was born on 11 February 1802 in Somers Town, London, England. He and Sophia Henningham were married on 18 November 1834 at Saint Martin's in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1 He died on 14 March 1860 at age 58 in All Saints, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.2 He was buried on 18 March 1860 at Key Hill Cemetery in Birmingham Cemetery, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
A William Thomas Empson was born 11 February 1802 and christened May 30, 1802, in Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, son of William and Ann (IGI per church records). This William Empson was from Somers Town, London, when he married Sophia -- abt. 1829 in Birmingham. William and Ann Willson were married in Old Church, Saint Pancras, September 14, 1800.

In the 1841 Census, William, 39, was a shoemaker living with his wife, Sophia, 32, (occupation, "gelt toy" maker), and son William, 5, Ann, 3, and Alfred, 6 mos., in the parish of St. George in Birmingham. All were born in Warwickshire.

In the 1851 Census, the family was living at 34 Court No. 3 Carver Street in District 23, Lady Wood, Birmingham, St. Paul's. William was 47, a shoemaker born in Somers Town, Middlesex, England. Sophia was a button maker, 42, born in Birmingham. They had 4 children: William, 15, a printer, Ann, 13, a button maker, Alfred, 10, and John, 7. A Thomas Cook, 48, a goldsmith and jeweller, was living next door with his wife Ann, 46, and two sons, 11 and 8 (possibly the Thomas Cook who later married Sarah Shaw Pennington?).

He died at the back of 64 Graham Street, All Saints District, Birmingham, of "syncopal asphyxia from fatty heart." Death was "immediate, by visitation of God," (heart atttack). Officiating minister was Peter Sibree. An inquest was held by the Coroner on March 15, 1860. He is listed as a cordwainer by profession.

His wife, Sophia, was a widow living at 64 Beehive Court, 2nd House, Graham Street, Birmingham, in the 1861 Census. William Thomas, Ann Sophia, and John were living with her.

He is listed as a cordwainer (leather worker) on the first marriage certificate and as a shoemaker on the second. Another William Empson, born in London in 1830, occupation shoemaker, is listed at 16 Princess St., Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, in the 1881 Census.

Possible Empson connections:

There were also Willsons in Birmingham. An Ann Willson was christened April 16, 1770, in St. Philips, Birmingham, dau. of John and Ann Willson. A John Willson m. Hannah Smith December 6, 1769, at Appleby Magna, Leicester, where he was born 1744. There were a number of John Wilsons marrying an Ann in London 1767-69. Note that Ann Willson was christened 16 Apr 1770 in St. Philips, Birmingham, parents John and Ann, and another, 8 Apr 1776, parents Robert and Sarah. Another Thomas Empson was christened in the same church 15 Jul 1800.

A William Empson was born November 23,1829,and christened St James, Westminster, London on December 18, 1829, son of George and Julia Empson.

In the 1871 Census, there was a Benjamin Empson, 78, a widower, living at 46 St. George's Rd., St. Pancras, London. Next door was the family of Henry Empson, 51, wife Sarah, 41, and sons William, 17, and Henry, 12. Benjamin, Henry, and William were all laborers. Both Benjamin and Henry were born in Norfolk, Benjamin in Casson and Henry in Stipet. Also living in St. Pancras, London at 6 Lt. Brook St, was George Empson, 29, carpenter, wife Jane, 24, and daughters Ella, 4, and Jane, 2.

There was a William Empson christened 26 Nov 1829, father William, mother Sophia, born in Queensborough, Kent. There was also a William Thomas Empson, married to Nellie who died in Oxford, Oxfordshire, 27 Oct 1936.

It would appear that while some branches of Empsons moved to Birmingham, others remained in London. The majority of Empsons seemed to go to the Oxford area of England. William Thomas Empson was baptized on 30 May 1802 in Saint Pancras Old Church.
