Biography

Edmund Freeman was born on 25 June 1596 in Pulborough, Essex, England. He and Bennett Hodsoll were married on 16 June 1617 in Cowfold, Sussex, England. He and Elizabeth Beauchamp were married on 10 August 1632 in Shipley, Sussex, England. He died on 21 June 1682 at age 85 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
Edmund Freeman was also known as Lt. Gov. Edmund Freeman. Edmond came on the "Abigail" in 1635. He settled first in Saugus, then Plymouth, then Sandwich where he was one of ten founders. He was a Deputy in Plymouth Colony and assistant to Governor Prence 1640-1646.

Were his wives Elizabeth Beauchamp, Elizabeth Gravelly, or Bennett Hodsoll? Edmond is sometimes spelled Edmund.

His will mentions 9 children. He apparently lived in Billinghurst, Sussex, from 1619 or 1620 for 7 or 8 years.

He came with his family on the ship Abigail of London, which sailed from Plymouth, England on 1 August 1635 with 220 passengers and many cattle. It arrived in Boston on 8 October 1635 infected with smallpox. He went first to Saugus, but soon moved on to Duxbury. In April 1637, he and 9 others gained the permission of the Plymouth Court to establish the first English town on Cape Cod. Within two years the settlement was legally incorporated as the town of Sandwich.

He was active in public affairs, being sworn as Assistant Governor of Plymouth in 1640 and re-elected annually through 1645. He opposed the enactment and enforcement of severe laws to punish the Quakers. In terms of the times, he had an unorthodox nature. He had person sources.1,2
