John Browne
M, #1406, b. 1629, d. 1706
Parents
Biography
John Browne was born in 1629 in Buckingham, England. He and
Mary Holmes were married in 1654 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. He died in 1706 at age ~77 in Providence, Rhode Island.
John Brown, a baker, arrived on the ship Elizabeth with two servants, James Walker (brother of Deacon Philip Walker) and Sarah Walker, in 1636. He and Widow Walker were among the first proprietors of the town of Seacunk (Seekonk), soon renamed Rehoboth (although Seekonk became a separate town in 1812 from part of Rehoboth). By 1644 he was living in Taunton and was an Assistant at the Plymouth Court. Massachusetts Bay Colony, believing Seekonk within its jurisdiction, ordered Brown to move to Seekonk or forfeit his lands there. The United Colonies determined that Seekonk was within the jurisdiction of Plymouth Colony, rather than Massachusetts Bay Colony, and John Brown was made chair of the chairman of the new board of Seekonk (now Rehoboth) townsmen.
