Biography

Mary Leonard was born on 12 September 1802 in Pompey, Onondaga County, New York. Benoni Campbell and she were married about 1820 in New York. She died on 30 June 1850 at age 47 in Winter Quarters, Douglas County, Nebraska.

: near North Platt River, Nebraska, shortly before her husband. Their children came to the valley with the help of those in the wagon train. Benoni joined the Church in the 1830 's and moved to Kirtland, Ohio , to be with the main body of the church. He helped build the Kirtland Temple. When the saints moved to Nauvoo , he and his family went with them. In 1846 they moved to Mount Pisgah and, then a few years later, they moved to Holt County, Missouri . In 1850 they went to Kanesville, Iowa , and started west with the Stephen Markham Company. On the way many of the Company were stricken with cholera. Benoni , his wife Mary , their son Heber , and several others in the Company died. Their son, John , wrote "we buried them by the roadside." The children managed to make a home in the Valley. Census records indicate Elisha was in Chemung Co., in 1830, Barton, Tioga Co., in 1840, and had a family of 7 children, 2 males b. 1821-30, and 5 daughters. This is probably another Elisha, not this one.

There is also an Elisha in the 1830 Census in Ft. Ann, Washington Co., NY, with a family of 4.

Elisha is also said to have been born in Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. Elisha Leonard had person sources.1

Benoni Campbell was born on 10 February 1800 in Deer Park, Orange County, New York. He and Mary Leonard were married about 1820 in New York. He died on 4 July 1850 at age 50 in Winter Quarters, Douglas County, Nebraska.
They were in Painted Post, Steuben Co., NY in 1825 and in Hornby in 1830. They removed to OH and were residing in Homer, Medina Co., OH, in 1840. They joined the Mormon Church and went west in 1850, dying enroute to Utah when cholera broke out. Their children completed the journey to Utah. They had 13 children. Benoni had four wives and lots of children. Benoni Campbell had person sources.1

Biography

Newell Leonard was born on 16 June 1825 in Hector, Tompkins County, New York. He and Mary were married about 1854. He and Lucy Blood were married on 30 March 1870 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan or Alma, Michigan. He died on 8 April 1925 at age 99 in Saint Louis, Gratiot County, Michigan. He was a lawyer by occupation. He served in the Civil War: Sgt., Co. F, NY LA.
He later stated the family moved to Wells when he was 3. He attended Troy Academy in Troy, PA, and then taught school in Bradford County, PA, and Chemung Co., NY.

Newell served in the Civil War, enlisting as a sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps on 10 Sep 1861 for 3 years and re-enlisted 24 Jan 1864. In Dec 1868 he removed to Ann Arbor, MI, and began law classes at the University of Michigan. He returned to Wells in April 1869 after graduating. He married Lucy Blood of Ann Arbor. They returned briefly to South Creek twp. and on May 17 left for St. Louis, Gratiot Co., MI, where Newell began a law practice.

In 1915, he was living with his son, Oliver, in Chicago, IL. Newell Leonard had person sources.1
