Ensign Philip King
M, #21622, b. 1645, d. 26 December 1710
Parents
Biography
Ensign Philip King was born in 1645 in Northan, Devonshire, England.
1 He and
Judith Whitman were married about 1670. He died on 26 December 1710 at age ~65 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He was buried at Neck 'o Land Cemetery in Taunton, Massachusetts.
Ensign Philip King was also known as Phillip King. Will dated 12 unknown 1706/7. Mentions daughter Mary Leonard.
He moved to that part of Taunton that is now Raynham in 1680, per Sanford, p. 1., 1682 per Emery, p. 372.
"He was a favorite with the Indians in the vicinity, with whom he traded, bringing his goods on horseback from Plymouth, Like the Leonards of Taunton, he and his family were never molested by the savage Indians because they dealt honestly with them." Genealogy of the Families of Kings, E. Sanford, Taunton, 1866, p. 6. Courtesy of Judith D. King, 5 November 2006, who has been very helpful in straightening out the intermarriages of Leonards and Kings in the early years.
Judith D. King also notes that a letter written by George King of Newport 27 August 1913 states that Philip's father was Walter King of England, but according to records at the Old Colony Historical Society, his father was John King of England (e-mail, 28 Nov 2006).
An article in the NEHGS Register 59:238 concerning Marquis Fayette King lists the origins of Philip King as follows: The grandfather, Capt. Samuel King, was the son of George and Betty (Shaw) King, and was born at Raynham, MA. His wife was Sally, daughter of Jonathan and Lydia (Haven) Hall, whom he married in 1798. He went to Paris, Maine, with his uncle, Jarius Shaw, in 1793. Capt. Samuel King was a descendant of John and Mary King, who came with John Humphrey, Deputy Governor of the Massachusetts Company, and were in his service in England. It is thought that they were of the Dorsetshire family. John King was born in 1600 and permanently settled in Weymouth, MA, before 1640, at a place called "King's Cove." He was recorded as a "seaman," "planter," and "goodman." In 1663 he was one of the proprietors of Mendon. His son Philip, whos weife was Judith Whitman, was the father of John King, who married Alice Dean, and they were the parents of Benjamin King, wife Abiah Leonard. The latter were the parents of George King, the father of Capt. Samuel, the grandfather of Marquis F. King."
Dates of children need to be checked out against original sources.
