Biography

Capt. Philip Slade was born on 8 April 1732 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He and Mary Read were married on 6 October 1755 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 30 July 1803 at age 71 in Pittstown, Renssalaer County, New York. He was buried in Slade Cemetery, Pittstown-Hoosick, New York.
Boyer, Ancestral Lines, p. 534:

"A farmer, he lived in Swansea until after the Revolutionary War. On 17 June 1778 he was commissioned Captain of the 8th Company, 1st Bristol County Regiment, Massachusetts Militia.

In 1775 he represented Swansea in the Provincial Congress and he served as Deputy in 1777. In 1779 he was a delegate to the state constitutional convention in Cambridge, MA, helping to draft the oldest written constitution still in force in the entire world.

After the (Revolutionary) War a number of Swansea families moved to Renssalaer County, New York. It is said they moved in covered wagons, bringing slaves with them. Many of the slaves were freed early in the 1800's when their owners were sure they could take care of themselves. It should be noted, however, that slavery was abolished in Massachusetts in 1780 as a direct result of the African-American contribution to the war effort, and that slaveowners who did not want to lose their "property" would have had to leave the state.

Philip Slade settled in the town of Pittstown, where he had property on the Pittstown-Hoosick town line on the east side of Pittstown. He was buried in the family cemetery near this town line one half mile north of Route 7. In the 1960's it was overgrown with heavy brush and fallen trees."
