Was his name Henry Gilbert (Henry G. Leonard) or Henry Guilford Leonard? Was he the Henry G. Leonard living next to James and Wealtha Leonard in the 1860 Census, who married Minerva Daggett of Easton and had children Ella J. b. 1856, Eva M. b. 1859, Abraham LIncoln Leonard b. 1868, m. Evelyn 1889 Norton, Henry J. Leonard b. 1874 d. 30 Mar 1946, Charles L. Leonard b. 1885 in Norton, m. Catherine King b. 17 Aug 1887 Taunton? I assume answers are yes, since Census seems to corroborate.

Children as listed in the 1880 Census. He is listed as Henry I. in the 1880 Census, which lists his wife as Manerva. Henry and Minerva were living near Alden and Mary Leonard and their grandchild Mason and George R. Leonard, 70, and his wife (Patricia?), 63. Washburn and Lincoln families were also living nearby.

He and Wealthy Smith were married after 5 September 1818 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹ He died on 9 December 1867 at age 67 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He was buried in Winnecunnet Cemetery, Norton, Massachusetts.

They lived near the corner of Bay Rd. and Prospect St. near the Easton/Norton line.

At the time of the 1850 Census, he was a farmer residing in Norton with his wife and children. Listed just before his family were the families of Gilbert Bradford Leonard (his dead half-brother Nathaniel's son), and Guilford Leonard, his brother. Next to Gilbert was a Washburn family; Nathaniel had married a Washburn. Note that James had named a son Gilbert, and Gilbert had named a daughter Wealtha.

At the time of the 1860 Census, he was a farmer residing in Norton with his wife, Wealtha, 59. He owned real estate worth $25,000, quite a sum in those days. They also had the children of his brother Guilford who had died in 1855: daughter Wealtha, 10, son Dean, 21, and son Charles, 17. Next door were living Henry C., 25, Minerva (Daggett of Easton, whom Henry married in 1855 -- at 12?), 17, Ella J. 4, and Eva M., 1. Henry was his son, Henry Gilbert Leonard? Note: this info does not agree with the ECL/GML info.

The first two are more certain to be their children; the last three appear to be related to him if not his children.

He was a prominent shoe manufacturer at Four Corners (Middleborough Gazette, 03/30/1855. His obituary appeared in the Middleborough Gazette 01/18/1862. James Leonard had person sources.² He and Wealthy Smith were married after 18 September 1818 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

July 13, Carver, MA (Family History Museum, Film #4029, item 3). Other work by John Leonard indicates it was Polly Woodward. Info on Polly Shaw from kenshaw@christian.net. It appears James married (2) Polly Woodward and had the second two children.

A Polly Woodward was born in Duxbury, August 10, 1784. No parents given.
