Biography

Asaph Dewey was born on 2 February 1758 in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.1 He and Penelope Sackett were married on 16 March 1783 in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.1 He died on 17 January 1833 at age 74 in Richmond, Berkshire County MA.2 He was buried in New Lenox Cemetery, North Lenox, Massachusetts.3
He was the 3rd child of 6, 3rd son of 4 (page 744, #6503, Dewey Genealogy). He was baptized in Westfield May 7, 1758. He lived in Hancock and Richmond, MA, and died at age 75.

He was a Revolutionary soldier. He served under Capt. Gray for 5 months in 1776.

He lived in Hancock and Richmond, Berkshire Co., MA.

An amusing story is told of the first ride the elder Asaph Dewey had in the steam cars. His journey from Richmond, MA, to Albany, NY, was by horseback or stage coach and was uneventful. Upon arriving in Albany, he boarded a car bound for Schenectady and had hardly recovered from the novelty of the ride when suddenly the train stopped and he and the other passengers were unceremoniously ordered to "get out and help push the car up the grade." All of the passengers except Asaph Dewey meekly submitted to the imperious command; and no doubt he enjoyed hugely the grimaces of his fellow travellers as they pushed the car along. Riding in the cars was probably too slow for Asaph, and he returned home by way of the canal (Dewey Genealogy).

The alternative wedding date is November 16, 1782. The one quoted is from The Corwin Collection, Vol. 3, CD (NEHGS). Asaph Dewey was christened on 2 February 1758.
