Parents

FatherArchippus Leonard (b. 4 December 1758, d. 13 January 1834)
MotherAsenath Cobb (b. 28 April 1760, d. 12 January 1848)

Biography

Seth Cobb Leonard was born on 28 January 1787 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1
He was captain of a schooner which sailed from Wareham to Stonington, CT, in the War of 1812. "Upon his arrival he was informed that the place was threatened by a British man-of-war, which arrived the next morning opposite the town. The inhabitants were wholly unprepared for defense, and most of them had fled into the country. Captain Leonard, a man of great courage, determined to defend the town, and finding a seven-pound cannon with sufficient ammunition, had it placed at a point which would bear upon the ship. The few remaining women brought their dresses for wadding. The man-of-war was too far off to have its shell effective, and owing to the shallowness of the harbor, was unable to come to the wharf, so the commander proceeded to land men in boats. Captain Leonard and his crew fired with such precision, as the boats approached, that several were destroyed and the others retreated to the vessel. The man-of-war soon after sailed away." Weston, History of the Town of Middleborough, 1906, p. 396. Was he killed at Wareham?

He may have been the Seth C. Leonard of Rochester who married Anna Perry Ellis October 21,1840 (NEHGS 1968 p. 259). Seth Cobb Leonard had person sources.2,3
