Biography

Stephen Hopkins was born in 1580 in Wortley, Wotten Underedge, Gloucestershire, England. He and Constance Dudley were married on 9 May 1599 in London, Middlesex, England. He died after 6 June 1644 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
He was probably the Stephen Hopkins who sailed on the Seaventure to Virginia, but was shipwrecked in Bermuda, where he was almost hanged for mutiny. He later got to Jamestown, VA, and spent two years there.

He, his wife, two daughters, and two sons arrived with two servants, Edward Doty and Edward Leister. He was probably one of the dissenters at Plymouth whose actions led to the necessity for drafting the Mayflower Compact. He and Edward Winslow were sent by the Plymouth Colony to visit Massasoit in 1621. When Samoset came to Plymouth in February 1621, he lodged with Stephen Hopkins. He was an Assistant in 1633 through 1636. He was on the original freeman list, and he was a volunteer in the Pequot War. (see Eugene Aubrey Stratton, pp. 308-9).
